Oranda Fry!

Recommended Posts

Thats so awesome.... I cant wait to see the pics as they grow, Its amazing how different each one is. :)

I got to breed two batches of fry, most of mine had defects to them. I did have one live for about a year, she was the of spring of my Pharoh and Fionia. The problem was the fry grew to tall (height wise) that she got a very bad case of SBD. I had to put her down. :(

I was trying to breed the Chocolate Oranda Line :panana

That is cool koko to bad more did not turn out to your liking. We raised some fantail babies earlier this year and their was not to many worth writing home about. I wasn't really prepared for them and think we had a bacterial issue and caused some fins to bend. I would say we got maybe 5% that were worth keeping the rest were really bad.

I took some more pics of the first batch i believe it is day 11 free swimming? The first 2 pics are of the same tub the last pics is tub 2. The second batch is still pretty small and really tough to photo. Now that i can see them all I am starting to second guess my original prediction on the amount of fry. There looks to be over 1000. I have had big cichlid spawns and this one is comparable to my dovii spawns. Not quite as many as when i did bluegill though.

I will probably be splitting the fry or moving them into larger tanks shortly. I just want to make sure they get well fed for the next few days while we get set up. I have been doing 50% water changes daily on the fry.

I am keeping them with no heater on the concrete floor in the basement. The temp is around 72 tds 400. Their tails look like they are starting to split but nothing real obvious yet i hope to start seeing it within the next few days.

Thank you sir! If i were to guess i would say there is around a 1000 still. I plan on culling them for the first time in a week or so. All the ones that do not have fantails will be first to go.

So.......what do you do with the fish that are culled? They go live with loving foster families right? Seriously though, are they used as feeder fish or some thing? I've been curious about this for a while.

I will separate the culls and grow them to a decent feeder size for my toadfish. I really hate culling, but it is necessary to allow the good quality ones room to grow and reach their full potential. Out of 1000 I will probably end up with 50-100 decent ones.

I see. Yeah culling sounds kinda unpleasant but what are ya gonna do. Moving on to your toadfish. I just googled it and that fish would give me nightmares. Seriously aren't you afraid it'll get out of the tank and eat you while you sleep?

lol yeah putting my hand in its tank can get a bit frightening. If he wanted to bite I'm sure it would not feel real good. I try to keep him well feed :)

Batch #3 looks to be a good sized group they hatched last night and most are swimming today! Batch 2 is around 2 weeks old now. Batch 1 is 3 weeks free swimming and about to get its first round of culling.

So today i go down to the fish room and catch them doing it again! This time i did not keep the eggs since i already have a few thousand fry to deal with. I have only had them about a month now and this is the 4th time. I have decided to name the little stud Ron. My first named gold fish!

So just an update the fry are about a month old and doing really well. I have started the long process of culling a few. I have removed 50+ and can't tell one was missing! I still have a bunch more to go through. The first round of culling I am going to remove all the ones with single tails and bent backs. At a month old if their tails have not split they won't. I hate to cull but i know my capacity is probably around 100 that i will actually be able to raise to a decent size so I must pick the ones to raise carefully.
