Plant Pots

Recommended Posts

How do I sterilize my brand new terracotta plant pots? I would like to put them in the tank, but I have read various things about sterilizing them. How do I do it? please explain to me as simply as possible :)

I just rinsed mine off with water and dumped them in the tank. If I remember rightly terracotta is slightly porous (has tiny holes in it) so you don't want to use chemicals as you probably won't get them all off. A scrub with a new toothbrush and clean water should do the trick :)

Same here, just rinsed them in warm water really well. I don't have mine in there any longer but they were fine while they were in the tank.

Never had any issues with ceramic pots and I've used them for years. Just a regular rinse with water,

don't worry, they are not glazed. my lfs is inside a garden centre (two dif. shops though, its in wyevale, the chain garden centre) so it is pretty handy for me when my parents are looking at plants and stuff. i used water that was as hot as I could take, and I got a brand new kitchen scourer to scrub the pots with. Billy and Rolo are finally together, just need to rid my plants of snail eggs. fang replied to my thread (it has been moved to snails and crusteceans forum). Fang told me to do the 1 part plain bleach to 9 parts water, soak for 15-20 seconds, then put the plants in a clean bucket, and use 10x the dose of dechlorinator, and let them soak in there for an hour. rinse off afterwards and put them in tank.

I boil mine if they are small enough to fit in a pot.
