Goldfish Just Kinda Hangs Out On The Bottom

Recommended Posts

Guest Shelbyns

My new oranda goldfish, about 4 inches total length, just sits on the bottom most of the time. S/he doesn't really swim around much. Is this just because s/he is still destressing (got her 2 days ago), or is s/he just a lazy bum? Anything I can do to make her more active. I spent $20 on her, and don't really want her to just sit and be boring. Think it will get better with time?

The water should be fine. The other very young ryukin is extremely active, and swims everywhere.

It is best to keep testing the water when you add a new fish. How big is your tank?

Usually it is also better to quarantine the new fish - otherwise he could be carrying something and pass it to your ryukin :(

:exactly

How big is your tank and what are your water parameters. We can't help without those numbers. Just because one fish is active doesn't mean the water is ok. Like humans fish have different tolerances for water and stress. How long has the tank been set up?

While it is a good idea to know your water, etc, etc.....I can tell you that for the past 9 months, I have a telescope who does next to nothing. She is the least active fish I have ever had. I have 11 right now. I have prazi'd her and the tank she is in more than once....I have salted it, I have moved her, etc. She literally will do NOTHING until that food is dropped in. SO, while, you should rule everything else out, just know that it MIGHT be just the way this fish is. Bummer, but maybe.

For concerns like this, I'd try to look deeper. Could you please insert details accordingly, Shelbyns?

[*]Test Results for the Following:

[*]Ammonia Level?

[*]Nitrite Level?

[*]Nitrate level?

[*]Ph Level, Tank (If possible, KH, GH and chloramines)?

[*]Ph Level, Tap (If possible, KH, GH and chloramines)?

[*]Brand of test-kit used and whether strips or drops?

[*]Water temperature?

[*]Tank size (how many gals.) and how long has it been running?

[*]What is the name and size of the filter(s)?

[*]How often do you change the water and how much?

[*]How many fish in the tank and their size?

[*]What kind of water additives or conditioners?

[*]What do you feed your fish and how often?

[*]Any new fish added to the tank?

[*]Any medications added to the tank?

[*]Any unusual findings on the fish such as "grains of salt," bloody streaks, frayed fins or fungus?

[*]Any unusual behavior like staying at the bottom, not eating, etc.?
