Cloudy Water

Recommended Posts

Hey there, :hi another question. Does anyone know why my water is cloudy?? It was crystal clear until like two or three days after having my goldfish in it, and it's been cloudy ever since!! Is there anyway to make it go away? Is it just a phase?? I see all these pictures in the picture forum of crystal clear water and that is what I want!! :D My water is ugly, I need advice!!

Hi Fishfelice, and welcome to the board!!

Your cloudy water is nothing but your tank being in the beginning of cycling, the development of good bacteria that will convert ammonia and nitrites to non toxic form and keeps your fish alive. The bacteria is building up and tries a find a place to settle in.

How big is your tank, and how many goldies are in there? What kind of filter, and how long has it been running? Do you have any kind of test kit to see how far your cycling is gone as of yet?

To help your bacteria along, you can try to add some extra filter material, like filter floss or sponges from the fish store, so they have additional space to settle into. Or you can get a product called *BIospira* in the refridgeration section of your fish store. That helps the cycling process along tremendously and cuts down on time... :)

Thank you so much Ranchugirl for the advice! My tank is 30 gallons and I have three goldfish in it. The filter has been running for about three weeks. It's a penguin filter, it has a Bio-Wheel but I'm not sure if it is working as it is old and has been used before and dried out again and used again and dried out again, etc. I don't have a test kit for the water but I would really like one to see how it's doing.

You can get your water tested at your fish store, but make sure they give you actual numbers, not just a genuine *Your water is okay* remark. Although it is a good idea to invest one, since you wonna follow the cycle every day, and finally, when its done, a well deserved HURRAY! :D
