What Small Fish Could Go With My Goldies?

Recommended Posts

I have a 55 gallon, with 2 commons and 1 shubunkin. Should i get one more fish? If you think so, what type? - i want a fish which will all be friends... And dont need big changes, like temperatures.

And in my 20 gallon, should i get a ryukin and a oranda? is that ok?

THNX

I dont think I'd add any more if you already have 2 commons and a shubie in there! Those guys need more like 20 gallons apiece because theyre so long and such fast swimmers. Theyre really better suited to ponds. I have some in my 100 gallon and it just doesnt seem big enough for them. Just my opinion though.

How about a couple of Hill Stream loaches (also called Coldwater plecs (they're not plecs!) or butterfly loaches)? They are border line fishes that do well in cold and tropical water. I have got 2 in my tropical tank.

I could try get you a picture of mine when they come out? Or see - http://www.loaches.com/species_pages/beauf...ichowensis.html

hillstream loaches rock :rockon i've got one in one of my tanks, and he's so cool looking, and does well on keeping the algae down in there. if you look on the page of compatible fish with goldfish, the hillstream loach on that page is dyson, who live in my smaller tank :)

um, i also know that mountain minnows (think that's the name) do well with goldies, as long as the gf aren't too big - they might eat the minnows...

in the 20 i'd go for 2 orandas, just cos i love orandas!!!!! but a ryukin and an oranda would work fine too :D

Hi,

I agree with jsrtist--I wouldn't add any more fish to your 55, they need the most space of all goldfish. I once had one comet in a 50 gallon and he loved it, lots of swimming room.

In your 20, you could do a tropical tank. I have some tetras (Columbia red fin), they are hardy and there are SO many neat looking varieties of tetras.

I just saw your question about getting a ryukin or an oranda for your 20 gallon. You could get some small ones. It would be fun to have some other varieties of goldies.

But realize that with good care they will thrive and eventually get larger and possibly need more room. I really do think of the "ten gallon rule" as a minimum. The two goldies I have now are getting huge (a fantail and a telescope). When I got them in July, they were tiny and then a 20 gallon looked huge. Now it is looking rather small. :)

Someone on this board once said to get the largest tank you can afford at the "get go" and then you don't have to upgrade so quickly.
