Poorly fantail

Recommended Posts

Hi

Any help/advice would be appreciated please. I have two fantails, a male and a female, about 8 years old. One of them has seemingly got a swimbladder issue over the last month or so as he is frequently floating at the top, or otherwise upside down in the middle of the tank at rest. There have been a few times where efforts to fix it have worked, but the issue keeps recurring. He is fully able to swim when woken up, and can swim to the bottom of the tank, although finds this harder than swimming near the top.

I have followed some advice on this issue in:

1) adding a very small amount of aquarium salts to the tank when cleaning

2) withholding food for three days

3) feeding with shelled peas

Sadly nothing is working. The other fantail is completely healthy, so I am worried that the male has an internal problem that is affecting his swimbladder. I had been told after the withholding of food and then feeding of peas that if he is still not fixed that I should perhaps euthanise him. It would be very sad if I had to do this, particularly as a friend of mine will be taking them both soon to live in her pond as keeping them in a tank is making me feel increasingly guilty. So I just wanted to know if there are any other things I can try to save him, or if you think the kindest thing to do would be to euthanise him.

Thank you very much in advance for your advice and help - it is very much appreciated.
