Pearlscale tail rot

20 posts in this topic

Over the past week my pearscales tail has began to wither away. I tried increasing the tank temperature a little and also water changes every other day but he is showing no signs of improvement. Does anyone know what the best way to help him is?

Hi there sorry for not getting back to you.

The one thing I can see is a problem is the internal filter. They are known to cause issues with goldfish since they get there water so dirty the filters can't keep up with them and will start to have gunk in the filter that can cause fin rot.

So the first thing I would like you to do is find a HOB filter, the next thing I think would be good to do is General Cure it has Prazi and Metro in it. Since you have them in a QT tank it should be easy to do :)

Oh thank you for responding on this topic Koko, I lost track of it.

OP, can you describe the tank size and history a bit better?  You’ve owned this fish three months, has he been in quarantine the whole time or was he ever in the main tank?

How old and big is the main tank, and how many other fish?  Have they had any history of illness? That sort of tail degradation can be due to water quality issues (most common) but also certain bacterial infections.  More information can help us rule out other causes.

Does he seem pineconed at all?  It’s tough to tell with pearlscales but a good top down view of the peduncle and belly can help us see.

Well I would work on getting the tank to the recommend tank requirements first.

First thing I would do is a bigger tank if you want another fish. Then I would work on a HOB :)

Read the guidelines that Sharon wrote this will help you :)

Alright, thanks. From the guide my tank right now is fine for my one goldfish so instead of other goldfish are there any other tankmates you think i could add without having to get larger tank?

Honestly goldfish do better in single species tanks, but they can sometimes have Ancistrus in there to control algae, or white cloud minnows.  I really recommend just keeping them alone however.

Goldfish belong with goldfish.  They don't regard fish of other species as friends.  Koi are an exception, but you need a large pond to keep a koi with your goldfish.

Why do you want to increase the amount of waste in your tank by adding snails?

Well obviously i dont want to increase waste in my aqaurium, its just that have a single goldfish in there now i just thought it'd be nice to have something else in the tank. Also they would be helpful with algae control a bit

You could get away with it, but you will need to up the water changes.

The problem I have with snails is you can't really QT then and sometimes they carry nasties with them. I would have to say I would just wipe down the algae in the tank.

I have to do this with my 40B every time I do a water changes. I would love to have something to help with the algae but I found it much better and easier to just deal with it myself. :)

IMO
