Some pics of my pond and some changes I made. And a new koi!

Hello everybody! It's finally warming up here in Michigan. Winter lasted well into April this year. I've finally had some time and nice weather to do some work on my pond. I also got a Lemon Hariwake koi that I have been really wanting for a long time so I am super excited to share! For this who don't know me, I have been on kokos and keeping goldfish and koi for about the years. This site taught me a lot of what I know! For those who have seen this pond before, I got rid of the huge rain barrel filter that was nornally on the bottom right of the pictures. It was not easy to clean. Nearly impossible actually. I added an extra half whiskey barrels filter instead and I also picked up an aquascape ultra kleen filter for super cheap from some guy with more money than brains... That's a hole different story . I have an airpump pushing air about r feet down, where there are two air stones. I wanted to be sure there was enough circulation near the bottom, with is almost 5 feet. I also rearranged a lot of the flagstone. I had originally put the small pieces around perimiter and then put the smaller ones on top. What I did this time was put the bottom ones underneath and the big ones on top. Some of the placements worked out nicely to make cares for frogs to sit in. I also hid all of the wires, air tubes, and hoses better, for a cleaner look. All I have to do now is put the river rock back around the flagstone but I am out of time today. Please, any questions, ask! Hope you enjoy.

Thank you :)

One other idea I have is to bury the canister filter about a foot in the ground so it isn't such an eye sore. It is also makes more noise than the other "filters" as the water splashes into the the pond so it should quiet things down with the return being closer to the surface. My concern is what to do with it during Winter, as the ground will freeze. I think I could take the top and media inside and cover the empty canister with a plastic bag so water does not get inside, freeze, and bust it. I guess I could remove the canister as well but then I have an empty hole near the pond that could collapse etc.

What’s the frost depth in your zone?  Buried far enough you might not have any problems, if you only freeze down a few inches.  The moving water would also help keep it from freezing.

Oops I forgot to get the butterfly koi pics.... Sorry! I had a pic of my pond from 4 years ago come up in my Facebook memories. I thought it was interesting how it has changed. Photos are from same day but 4 years apart. bebf42f0f9f9fd60b8bf812f7e9d4aa7.jpg15bd29adc1565d3f9e2dc7354d45098e.jpg

Looking good DP. I really like how that grass has grown, gives it more dimension :)
