Baby Goldfish is Fin Nipping

Recommended Posts

Hey all, not sure if this is the right place to post, if not, I can repost somewhere else..............

My sole surviving baby oranda fry from last November's surprise breeding is a little over 2 inches in total length now and lives in the 150 g with all the big fish.  I have noticed as of the last couple of week that he is kind of a bully.  He has been nipping at the fins of some of the larger butterfly tail orandas.  He seems to be doing it to the largest one most often, but I have seen him nip at several of them.  It is always the tails, and he is definitely nipping, as when he does it, the fish dashes frantically away when he does it.  No damage has been noticed, but I am not sure why he is doing this.

Is this normal behavior for young goldfish?  Is he just a little brat?  Aside from simply removing him from the tank, is there anything I can do to stop the behavior?  My plan was to eventually rehome him when he got big enough, and he is probably big enough now, but he is a cutie and I'd like to keep him for now.  I don't really want to move him to a tank all by himself, but I don't want him to cause damage either.  He eats well, and I feed twice daily, so I don't think he is hungry............................

any suggestions?  Has anyone else ever had a bully of a fish?  Especially such a young one?

I would put him into a pond or a bigger tank by him self.

How big is your tank and how many fish in it?

The tank is 150 gallons, currently has 7 fish in it, including him, but I have 2 fish in a hospital tank, so the total stock will be 9 goldfish once they move back to the tank.

I suppose I could put him in the 20 long after I am done using it in another week or so, but I worry about him being a lone fish.  Although he is a little turd, and I would really hate for him to actually hurt or damage the bigger goldies.

I was hoping to eventually get a small "whiskey barrel" pond going on the back patio later this summer, but I am not sure when I can actually make that happen.  Perhaps I will move him to the 20 until I get to that point, and he could be my little patio pond friend :-)

How are things going with lil' Nipper?

A whiskey barrel pond sounds like goldfish torture.  One of the most important values of a pond is shallow water and lots of swimming space.  Perhaps your "whisky barrel" is something very different from what I picture.

Good, I moved him to the ranchu tank, and he has not bothered anyone in there. :-)
