Plugging hollow ornaments

Recommended Posts

I bought these great (at least I think so) palm tree ornaments for my new tank.

They were hollow on the inside and also unfortunately top heavy so they wouldn't stand up in the tank!  :thumbdown   Yes, these were sold as tank ornaments.

I still liked them so much I decided to fill them.  I considered filling with epoxy or completely with aquarium silicone but I thought that was a bit of a waste considering the material costs.

So instead I filled them with sand and glued a piece of pond liner to their bottoms with aquarium silicone.

I has worked out well.  Unfortunately i didn't take a before picture but here is the after.  They're quite heavy now but I figure as long as I don't go swinging them around they should hold up well.

Just putting this out there for anyone in the future who is trying to figure out a way how to plug hollow ornaments.

Thank you all.  I was just happy to be able to use them.  They are a good height for the tank without being too bulky or pointy etc.  They'd look even better on a sand substrate but I'm planning on staying bare bottom.  I am going to put a piece of sand colored paper under the tank in hopes that it will give a sand vibe.

Maybe put a couple of gold colored glass gems at the bottom for the goldfish to play "push around the coconuts!"
