My first spawn

32 posts in this topic

So I only had Lips and Bubbles a few days and they surprised me with a spawn. I cough them early in the act of releasing eggs in the quarantine tank, decided to hand spawn them and see what happened. I was new to all of this but was able to get a really high percentage of fertilization and now they are hatching today on day 4. So excited and can't wait to watch these lil tikes grow up...

So my first batch of baby brine shrimp hatched but here wasn't enough I thought... Increased the amount of eggs used in next batch. But I have powdered Spirulina, and on kensfish it says it can be fed to fish fry, was wondering if I could give this to my fry as a supplemental until more brine shrimp are hatched? I don't want them to starve... Or get stunted?

Congrats! That is so exciting! I'm also a first timer trying to raise fry so I'll probably be lurking around your thread ;)

That's a good question about the powered spirulina. I think it would be OK to feed it to them, but I'm not entirely sure. Someone with more experience will be along who can definitely anwer your question. You could try cooked egg yolk in the meantime as I've eead that is a good alternative... it's messy though.

Congrats!  That is a ton of fry.  :yikes  Mom and dad are gorgeous.  :thud

I would think powdered spirulina would be fine.  I had 2 brine shrimp hatcheries going at once and had one hatching about every 12 hours . . . and I only had one fry.  :tomuch:

Wow! Look at all those!

That was just one corner of he tub there are probably 10 times that in the tub total.... Gonna have to start another tub if they keep growing at this rate, they are gonna run out of room before I can cull.

9 days old here are some pics still a little blurry, I can't get my big camera to take any better pics either. But you can defiantly see their spread double tails now. Planning on first cull this weekend.
