Black fish color change

Recommended Posts

What is the likelihood that an all black fish (and I'm thinking Thai oranda or ranchu fwiw) will change color. Specifically if they are still all black at a point where they are 3-4" or so in size. If you don't know anything about their breeding/lineage, is there anything that you could look for either way to give you hints at color stability?

I've heard that food, water parameters, water temp, and lighting can affect it.  But I haven't heard exactly what "to do" or "not to do" if you want to try to keep a fish black.  I've never had a solid black fish, but all of my calico's have gotten more black on them as they get older (no idea if their environment is a factor in this, or if it's all genetics).

I do know fish can still change colors at a larger size.  I got a 5 inch tancho ranchu, and since I've had him, his body is changing from pearly white to orange.

I personally think genetics is the biggest factor.  I'm glad you posted the question bc I'm interested to see if anyone has any articles of studies done on this (environment vs genetics) for black goldfish.

Genetics are the main factor of whether the fish keeps the black or does not. Yes, a color change can happen at any time I believe. I forget who, but I think maybe Lisa (Fantailfan1) had her oldest fish change colors. I forget, so she will have to clarify any incorrect information :rofl

I got this fish when from Petsmart she was about 5-6" long with out her tail.... She was a full size fish when I got her and she soon changed on me... I think alot of the black fish have been in ponds with lots of sun...It all just depends :)

Koko, I've heard about the sun playing a factor in color vibrancy as well.  I'm waiting for someone to post an article  - I'm so curious about this too!

I think genetics play the biggest part.  I have two shubunkins that I ordered from the same place and one gained more black and one lost more black.  They have been in the same conditions.  I also have a brown/black comet who is around 6 years old now.  She tends to be browner in the winter and blacker in the summer.  Since my pond is mainly in the shade...I'm not sure if sun has much to do with the black...but it may deepen the colors.  There is definitely more algae being eaten in the summer...that may account for the darker color in the summer.   I also think that fish can change their color according to the color of their environment to blend in more.  The blackest I have seen my comet was when she was inside with black sand on the bottom of the tank.  Initially she was in a tank that had a clear bottom and she wasn't nearly as dark.

Here are some photos:

Smokey in tank with clear bottom:  She was the light brownish fish:

Then she was moved to a tank with the black sand:

Now she is in the pond and looks like this:  http://i1088.photobucket.com/albums/i322/Kayla102968/IMG_4344_zpsc16euy9d.jpg

Here is Oreo when I first got her:  http://i1088.photobucket.com/albums/i322/Kayla102968/IMG_6916_zpse67b2700.jpg

Here is Oreo now:  http://i1088.photobucket.com/albums/i322/Kayla102968/IMG_1056_zpscb62e953.jpg

Here is Smudge now...she has gotten way blacker (she is one on the far left):  http://i1088.photobucket.com/albums/i322/Kayla102968/IMG_1865_zps094533c1.jpg
