Subscribing benefits

Recommended Posts

OK, first off, I understand COMPLETELY how awesome this community is and how it's worth supporting. But I was wondering if anyone would care to weigh in on what the advantages of subscribing would be compared to being an active and full member like myself.

I only ask because I really don't make a lot of money. And since I live in the NYC area, I want to make clear that by "not making a lot of money" I mean that I'm lucky if I make around $30K per year for teaching college courses. Those of you who live here may know how that translates to definitely not a lot of money or expendable income, apart from worshiping my fish perhaps beyond the point of common sense. I'm from a working-class background in middle America, so I do understand that to be employed in any sense is a privilege, and I appreciate it. However, I merely point this out so that it's not that I'm being miserly or a jerk. I just have reservations about subscribing to anything, even if I really, really appreciate places (or publications, etc) like Koko's. I know that perks include special forums and so forth for members, but I'm not really sure what these involve.

For those of you who have subscribed, especially if you held out for a while, how has making the shift changed your relationship to the Koko's community? I love this forum and how completely NOT unpleasant it is compared to nearly every other Internet forum I've ever encountered, but again, how has subscribing changed or improved your relationship to the community here?

I hope this isn't an unpleasant question!

Subscribing, to me, has allowed me to form an even better relationship with the members of the community. The Subscriber's Forums are definitely a place that you get to know everyone. I wouldn't cancel my membership unless I had to, simply because of how close I have grown to the subbie community. I currently have no goldfish, and still won't cancel!

It also allows for faster answers to any fish issues. (via the 911 Emergency Help) This has proved invaluable a few different occasions.

To me, it's worth the $70.00/year. Much better than a magazine subscription.

Don't worry, your question isn't unpleasant, especially as you have asked it so politely! :)

I understand, I'm also in a tricky financial situation but I try and support the forum as much as I can.

To put my reasons simply, I subscribe:

1) To help keep the forum going. I hope this doesn't offend Koko in an way but I kinda see it like a charity for fish because it helps promote good care and it saves lives. I'm big on animal welfare and anything that gives these creatures more of a voice gets a big thumbs up from me! :thumb:

2) As a way of saying thank you for saving my Googles several times, and for the fantastic level of expertise so readily available. I would never have been able to afford to take my fish to a specialist vet, yet the advice and treatment plans I have been given on here have been just as advanced in my opinion.

3) There are people on here that I now deem friends and it is nice to be able to share aspects of our lives in parts of the forum that are a little more private. Also, there are places you can talk nonsense to your heart's content or have a rant about life, and someone will always have something supportive to say. It's kinda like therapy! :rofl I think I would miss that if I wasn't a subscriber.

I'm sure others will mention the things I have missed but they are my three main reasons.

You could always try it out just for a month and see if you like it :)

I love that I've been able to get to know people better and I love the random threads to talk about anything we want. Most of all i keep my sub going even when i dont have a lot of time to chat because of how often the forum has helped me..im sure some of my guys wouldnt be around now or those that have passed wouldnt have lasted as long as they did without all the help Ive received. I never want to see the site go down so i like to feel like Im helping it keep going!

:bingo: and being a Subby helps me keep this place up... we dont just have this Server but the Server the main site sits on too... See the site it to big to be on one server so I have to pay for 2 hosting sites.... Plus I try to give it all back with Raffles and such too....

I like that the subby area you kinda get more closer to ppl, and you become even closer friends back there... Also most ppl dont know is you can have your own Subby forum back there if you want to... Helen does :teehee

Everyone pretty much said all the reasons that I am a subby in their replies above. It's also given me a sense of community that I don't have in my non-internet life, so that's helpful.
