Established media in new filter

Recommended Posts

Wasn't sure where to place this topic since it includes both equipment & water quality information

So i'm almost complete with setting up my second tank (bottom tank in the picture)

just waiting for the lights to come in the mail.

I purchased a Fluval 306 and have it up and running with some media from my AC filters from the top tank.

Established media used:

  • 2 pieces of sponge (each are the size of a credit card that are about 1 inch thick), placed in the mechanical filtration basket
  • about a handful of bio-media, placed in bio filtration basket

right now, the water parameters read:

  1. Ammonia: less than 0.25ppm
  2. Nitrite: 0ppm
  3. Nitrate- 5-10ppm

will adding more media help cycle it faster? or just leave what I have now and let it do its own thing and test the water everyday?

Adding more media should help it cycle faster.  But then you may cause a bump in the tank of the filter you take it out of . . . :idont

I'd let it do it's thing and test daily.  As long as ammonia + nitrite (total) are less than 1, I'd add some Prime and retest later.  :D

Feed lightly  . . .

Warming the water and adding oxygen will help the colony build faster. It can double every day in good conditions.
