Recommended Posts

I decided to start this blog to keep a log on my accidentally spawned and hatched fry. May be if would be of help to others who go trough the same experience.

One fine day I woke up to find the entire bottom of my fish tank covered with eggs. [sorry, no photos of that. To much of a shock to take pics]

So when I got it back together I put them in a small bucket [this is a photo of G-1]

I took the water from a tank and added half teaspoon of aquarium salt and 2 drops of Tetra Medigold as advised to avoid fungus.

On day 4 the fry began to hatch.

When fry were 4 days old I fished them out using a small plastic coffee cup

Then I changed the water and raised the water level just a finger.

This is what the fry [G-1] looked like on day 4 of their life:

On day 3 was time for fry's first bite. My first attempt to hatch brine shrimp failed so I grinded some NLS pellets and fed it to them. Here is a very good video on how to make a hatchery and hatch brine shrimp:

lol they all look so cute

Looking Good!

Thanks!

I saw a pic of 3 weeks-old fry posted here by a fellow forum user that looked much bigger than my babies. Should I worry? I'm not underfeeding them for sure. May be I should speed up their transfer to a larger (longer) container.

Aww!! Cute little tails coming up!

Its incredible how they're starting to develop and look like fish. With 2 exceptions they are all buterfly tails like their parents.

UPDATE: A week or so ago I found some eggs with black thingies moving inside while I was scrubbing the big tank. Gogo & Rory couldn't reach them under the sponge filter and they dodn't get eaten as the rest. So there is a very small school of new fry I call gen-2.

The other two geberations are doing fine and I just moved them to a bigger container the other day. Pics coming up soon.

She here they are (gen 0&1) in their new temporary container.

It would have been nice to separate them by size but no room for that. Hopefully I'll be able to do that in a couple of years if I decide to go into breeding goldfish.

Here is a close up.

Sorry the pics are not the best but the containers that were good for keeping food and thus suitable for goldfish at the store were all like that, not transparent.
