New tank - oranda gulping for air?

Recommended Posts

Just started a tank (4 days ago) with black ranchu and oranda from LFS. Never had goldfish before.
Oranda keeps coming to the surface from time to time to gulp for air (10-30sec). Otherwise looks happy. Ranchu is fine. Both fish body under 3 inch. Whats up with oranda? Is it normal? Could it be overfeeding?

Fish-In cycle day 4 with media from stable 1 year old tank. Water test twice a day.

Bare Bottom 48x24x24 120 gallon tank with FX6 (Matrix and Eheim Pro media mix) + LED light
Ph 8
kH 6.8
Ammonia 0
Nitrite 0
Nitrate 0
Temp 19C/67F

I know you have some of the information already, but could you please copy the Diagnosis Form from the link in my signature and fill it out? All information in that form is to help the moderating team to understand exactly what is going on.

Hello! And welcome!

Please check out the link below on Guidelines for Healthy Goldfish.

You've got quite the large tank for two goldfish which is great. Since these fish are new you'll want to quarantine them. See links below on quarantining. Ideally you quarantine in a smaller tank so that you don't need to use as much salt and Prazi. If you do use the smaller tank, you'll want to clean out the larger tank to get rid of any parasites introduced by the new fish.

The surface gulping could be for several reasons: not enough oxygen in the tank, there is a film of protein on the surface, or gill flukes. (There may be other reasons.) For the first reason, make sure there is surface agitation so that oxygen gets mixed in with the water and/or put an airstone in the tank. For the second reason, surface agitation would help and don't feed food that floats. If gill flukes, then the quarantining process will help.

Thank you!

Thats my quaranting tank for now. At least till its a month old and I am ready for more fish :)

I think I have protein film - same as the other planted tank. My molies are constantly eating it. I guess same goes for the goldfish. I notice my goldfish only "gulp for air" when they hungry and they can see me.

Otherwise they look good and active. Ill post some pics.

Yes, Lisa is bang on. Do our scheduled prazi and salt rounds for the duration of their QT and make sure any new fish are qt'd in a separate tank with its own dedicated equipment that can be sterilized. Most fish don't need more than that to assure their health but a good, solid quarantine will reveal any bigger issues like bacteria. Infections or ich without jeopardizing the health of your other fish.

We'd LOVE to see pictures :D

They're beautiful! They look great. All goldfish have flukes which is why we include prazi in our treatment regimen. It knocks the levels back to almost zero. Gulping is often but not always a sign of flukes, so even if they're just greeting you it's good to be certain!

I think the salt and prazi is all that is necessary, though it you don't have it on hand a good fish medicine cabinet to have is Epsom salt, Furan-2, Triple Sulfa, Metronidazole, and Kanaplex, as well as Condy's Crystals/Potassium Permanganate for sterilizing the qt equipment and any plants :)

I'm sorry that people are telling you to prazi the tank when you have filled out the form indicating that you are doing so.  I see no reason to worry about this behavior.  I agree with you that they are probably slurping protein film from the surface.

Very nice fish.  I certainly would like to see a full tank shot.

So when they see you or are Hungry they are doing this? That normal for some fish.... Do you know what kind of foods these fish where feed before? The blood worms are they frozen or dried?

do they gulp after food?

Here is an update after a week - fish is doing good :)  I did an 80% WC. They still gulp but not as much - I added bubbles to increase water agitation and to help to get rid of protein film and put a glass cover on.

Here is a picture of the tank.

Thank you all for help!
