Culling?

Recommended Posts

I think it's time to start culling some of the fry. I was examining them today and I noticed one with a twisted spine that can't swim well. Since they're still young (almost 3 weeks) I expect there aren't very many defects to look for yet, but I'm now on the look out for spine defects. What else should I be looking for at this point? And what is the best way to cull?

There are many ways to cull babies. For fish that have physical deformities that threaten their quality of life, I personally feel it is best to euthanize them with clove oil. There's a thread in the D&D section somewhere, I think, on how to do that.

At this point, just look for defects that will keep the fish from leading a healthy life, such as those spine problems. Anything else is up to you, trait-wise.

Swimming problems alone may resolve themselves from that age.

What kind of goldfish are they?

Ah alright. My question was just in case you had dorsal-less fish. :teehee

I'd cull anything that looks like it'll impede their quality of life at this point. Any movement issues may yet resolve as they grow...
