Help Help. Mature Filter Media wanted

18 posts in this topic

Hi Guys!

I'm new here so be gentle :hi .

I've just inherited a fishtank and some fancies due to a sudden loss in the family.

Unfortunately I have just had another death to deal with... The cycled filter. :yikes

I work away and I have very young children so my wife is coping by doing lots of water changes but I really need to get the tank back up and running properly. I now have an Eheim Classic running on the tank but it is not cycled and the old media was useless.

I live in Manchester and so I was wondering if there is anyone in the Cheshire/Lancashire/Yorkshire area that would be able to sell/swap some mature filter media so I can kick start the cycling when I get back from work. I'll even travel further if needed.

Ash

I've mailed mine before. Do you think that would be something that would be allowed in the mail? :idont

Can you tell us the size of the tank as well as the size and the number of fish?

I'd be happy to give you some of mine but I live in London.

Cheers Blue! Much appreciated though.

Welcome to Koko's!!!!!

Thanks! I'm keen to learn and this seems like a great place to do it.

Cheers! That's really kind but I'm not sure it'd survive the journey!

Thanks Lis, That'd be absolutely amazing! I'm home from work on the 22nd Nov. I could drive down and grab some after that if it'd be ok with you!

I have 2 Redcap and 2 Pearlscale in a 200ltr tank. I've got one external at the moment and I'll be getting another ASAP. in about 6 months I'll be moving up to a custom mate 300ltr tank.

Yeah that'd be fine :) are you able to send/receive private messages? I'm not sure if new members can, that's why I ask :)

Excellent, the 300 L will be ideal for 4 fish :)

I was asking because it's hard to cycle a tank with 4 fish at 50 liters each and wanted this information so we could give you informed advice. I would feed them very sparingly and only once a day until the tank is cycled.

No, he can't. You can PM Koko and let her get the two of you in touch, probably via email? :idont

I also have a 40ltr tank that I inherited as well I could put one in there for the duration. As well as water changes we've been feeding every other day. Is this too little just until I get things kosher again?

Great.. I'm not sure if I can get PM's yet no. Should I put up my email address? I really appreciate it btw.

I think every other day feeding is fine for a short time while the tank is cycling. I would just leave the four of them together and manage this with water changes. It would probably be more work to have to do water changes in 2 tanks and the single fish might get stressed.

Cheers jmetzger72. We'll keep that up and get some MFM in ASAP to kick the new cycling off again.

Thanks everyone for being so helpful.

I'm not sure about the email address Ash, I have emailed Koko asking if she could provide me with your email address (as this is a public forum anyone would be able to view your email address if you posted it on a comment) :)

Cool.

I'd rather not put it up for sure. Cheers for all the help.

You're tank is stunning by the way. Next year I want to go for something similar in another room. I used to keep Discus years ago and getting these fancies has resparked my love of fish. Slowly but surely.

Yeah, got plenty of time to get hold of it anyway haha :)

Thanks! It's my pride and joy haha. I've never kept discus myself, but we have them where I work and they do fascinate me, they're such beautiful fish :) glad you're getting the fish keeping bug back! :D
