you cant i think until they try to have "IT" (have babies). but if you only have one fish it doesnt really help. but if you have quite a few then when a fish lays egg (lol, i dont no how they have it but you experts will) or is pregant then the male fish will follow the female fish

rough ESTIMATION now is body size..

Female are round and fatter and male are more slander and more active and usually chasing the female after they reach about 2 inch long

remember, this is jus a rough guide... to be exact, you have to wait till breeding season...

Hmm....if I have a pair of goldies (of the same age) and noticed that only one tends to chase after the other...does this mean the chaser is most likely male? I always thought it's an aggression thing... :) It's going to be hard for me to tell the fish sex now that I have fishies of different sizes/age....

a goldfish chasing can be an agression thing

especially when one of them is nipping at the other

on the other hand, if one starts to bump the other fish around

the abdominal area than its probably a sign that they are

going to mate

good luck finding out. I still don't know if my max is a girl. His name is maximus but I've been calling him maxi lately just in case he is a girl! I may never know because I have no other goldies and the pictures are so hard for me to follow!

how big is your fish

if its under less than 2 inches, it will not be possible to tell yet

can you post a few pic up(via one of the moderators)

we may be able to help identify if its a male or female
