Ryukin abdomen distended. Constipation?

Recommended Posts

My ryukin's abdomen feels firm and distended. I believe she over ate as she is faster and more nimble than my other three fish. It has been three days. She is not her normal spunky self. Have not really observe any poop.

I fasted yesterday and today gave deshelled cook peas.

I have seachem metronidazole, kanaplex, melafix and pimafix on hand.

Please help me save her. My other three fish are fine.

Hi there, Andy. The link in my signature will get you the Diagnosis Form. If you wouldn't mind filling that out that would be very helpful. If you need it copy-pasted, just let me know.

Let's fast for the next 2-3 days, and observe the poop, please. It doesn't look too bad, and she is likely to be full of eggs. This is the time for it.

I agree with Alex. It doesn't look bad and I think maybe eggs as well :)

If eggs how long would it take for abdomen to deflat or she has to laid them? should I separate and qt her as it is difficult to fast one fish and feed other three? Plus she can still eat algae.

It's hard to say. if she does have eggs, having spawning males around might encourage her to lay them sooner. Do you have males in the tank?

If it is constipation, then fasting will probably help. In this case, yes, move her to a separate tank if possible.

Yes, there is a male but showed no interest. Moved her to qt with a small oranda.

Can I ask why you moved the Oranda with her? Are you fasting them both?

How is behaving today?

Also, is your Nitrate normally 0 or is that because you had just done a water change. Is the tank heavily planted? That seems odd in a cycled tank with 4 fish :idont

Andy,

I think this is a good time to email Steve to see what he suggests. :)

We are not abandoning you, but since the fish came from such a good (and extremely helpful) source, it would be good to get his input.

It does appear that the fish is pineconing. Have you gotten in touch with Steve? He will really need to be at the forefront of treating your fish, if you want him to honor any guarantees.

Just sent Steve an email. Will metronidazole or kanaplex help?

When a fish is pineconing, we try not to use Kanaplex unless we have to.

You have Metro-meds, right? Start her on that ASAP, please. 1% of her weight daily, in a combined 3-6 meals.

Yes, please do so. In the mean time, let's start with metronidazole powder, which is used at 200mg/10 gallons. I think we can also add TriSulfa to the water, and we may need to, depending on how things go in the next couple of days.

The oranda was already in qt, but just moved her to mt. She is still weak but still swimming upright.

It was after a wc in the qt. Just completed another wc and added metronidazole powder and prime this morning.
