Snail tank update lots o pics

17 posts in this topic

I switched out the sand from my white caribsea to the TMS black sand. I am liking it a lot! Here are some pics of the tank and some of the snails I got from Daniel (the little magenta and purple ones) the rest are ones I have raised from egg clutches. A few cherry shrimp too :)

I could not tell if it was black (which is a different species) or chestnut.

Its cool I like the setup. :)

Thanks :) well its parent was sold as black at Petsmart, but this (photographed one) is a baby from a blue/black cross.... could have been mislabeled by the pet store and is a chestnut, or can they crossbreed?

Pet stores are unreliable for species identification. That said black mystery snail is not a species but what is sold as black mystery snail commonly is a different species from the others normally sold as mystery snails. That said what they sold you may have been diffusa.

Its hard with mystery snails because there is so may names that can be transposed. The chestnut color is also one that can apply to several types but often its a brown with darker brown stripes.

The best way to tell is the shell shape. If your black was identical in shape it was probably diffusa. As for crossing I dont know if it is possable among close related species or not :idont

Those are beautiful. You didn't get any of Daniel's baby snails though?

I love your snail tank also.

Right. I knew he was finding homes for the babies but didn't know he had adult ones also. Did you get adults or babies?
