Meet the Fish : YIFY
The Next Generation

YIFYPeirogitext.jpg
YIFY used to follow her big brother from one end of the tank to the other. She still exhibits her little sister relationship with him in the pond, usually just going where he goes, investigating what he’s up to and not wanting to be too far from him which he tolerates in a good natured way.

BigBro_and_LilSis.jpg

She’s developing a lighter underbelly.

YIFY11.14.14.jpg
I wonder if she’ll stay this color.

Here’s what she looked like at 7 months

YIFY2.29.14.JPG
"Where did my brother go?!"

He was moved to a different tank for 4 months and they were abruptly separated when they were growing up.

I think his sudden disappearance stressed her, and could account for why YIFY is so attached to him today.

Meet the Fish :  Halley

You’ve met sloe-eyed Halley already; she’s the one that changed color from black to orange.

A dreamy Pisces, she’s been with me from the very beginning.

I wasn’t 100% sure at the time the conditions in our pond would support her. I knew nothing at all about goldfish keeping. The dozen or so mosquito fish were doing fine, I hadn’t put them there and they were surviving without my care. That was very encouraging to someone who at the time knew nothing about fish keeping. She moved in and then invited her friends over to a perpetual pool party.

And don’t tell her, but Halley isn’t really a comet.

She’s a STAR!

I hope you enjoy these photos I took yesterday at a West Sonoma County Japanese-styled spa.

Occasionally I think about moving a few of my goldfish to this goldfish paradise.

WestSonomaCountySpaPond2.jpg

Do you think they'd like it here better than my pond?

I've already done an API water analysis: it is fine. The only risk would be herons, otters and raccoons - but they'd have a better chance to hide from them.

Miamiguy asked me today “how did all that rain affect your fish?”

Which was a great question, since I had been wondering the same thing.

I had already pulled out the API test kit along with the pH meter earlier this morning and had some answers for him.

First of all: Thanks, Mother Nature. For the 11 inches of rain (23cm) that fell over the last 24 days. California needs it.

That would be 572 of fresh rain water into my 900 gallon pond! However, most of it runs out the overflow hole once it fills –
so let’s say 4” or 200 gallons were actually retained. So about 22% was replaced by fresh rainwater.

That gives me these nice ammonia, nitrite and nitrate readings:

PondReadingAfterRain12.14.jpg

  • The pond’s water temperature rose dramatically from 52F to 60F within a few days. And then fell back down to 52 with the cooler nights. The fish are active and feeding at fall levels.

  • The pH lowered dramatically from 8.1 to 7.4
That’s just about how far our city water is from our local creek’s pH reading last time I measured it.

  • The water softened from 10 GH /179 ppm CaCO3 to 7/ 125.5

  • The KH went down from 8.75 to /150 ppm CaCO3 to 6/ 107  which is less than recommended.

Valentine's Day

My co-processor gave me a custom-modified fountain pen as present for Valentine's Day yesterday. :9

So I spent the evening playing around with goldfish Sumi-e painting. He also gave me a digital tablet a few weeks ago, which allowed me to correct my watercolor on the computer. Here's the original photo of Vanilli and my painting of her which I edited with my new pen and tablet.

Meet the Fish :  Kawaii
The NexGeneration

Kawaii_feb2015.jpgKawaii_fish1.jpg

Kawaii is into J-Pop and knows all the words to Hatsune Miku’s World is Mine, よね。

She does cosplay sometimes with her friend Sashi and they dress up like Mandarin fish and pretend they’re in a band called the “Dragonets.”
She loves to read fashion magazines and make herself adorable. How do you think she’s doing?

Viewing Dome:  A homemade goldfish observatory

I purchased a black plastic bin for $4 from Big Lots locally and a 12" acrylic sphere with a 5.5" cut out for $22 including shipping off Amazon. I cut holes in the bin on the sides and the top like so:

sphereOnStandweb.jpg

Nice and study, and disappears underwater into my black pond liner. I sanded them well to remove any sharp edges.

Here's what it looks like on it's first day.

sphere2.jpg

sphere1web.jpg

There are some floating pellets inside around the top edge to encourage my fish to try out their newest toy.

I haven't used a wet vac to remove all of the air yet.

I'll post more photos with fish playing in it as soon as their PTSD wears off, we had a predator bird this morning.

Meet the Fish :  Ninja 忍者

Tiny Ninja eluded detection for months, and now he's making the scene.

ninja2web.jpg

He is the first pond fry not to be raised indoors or given any special consideration as a pet fish.

He's a little survivor and we wish him a long life in the pond!
