Oh no! Little Lasagna has white spots on her head. She's not flashing, nor are the other pond fish. I'm thinking it may be fungus, baterial infection or (I hope not) flukes. I honestly have no idea, except I'm pretty sure it is not Ich.

Here's what she looks like:

LasagnaSickWhiteSpots.jpg

She was in a PraziPro bath for a couple of hours and then had a 5 minute salt dip, following these salt dip instructions. I did a .2% API aquarium salt solution.

Now she's in 5 gallons of her regular pond water, just recovering from the stress. If you'd like to follow her journey back to health check out my entry for her in the

Disease and Diagnosis forum here.  Send some healing energy to my little ryukin.

Yiffy's Color Change

Yiffy has undergone a slow but no less dramatic transformation into an adult goldfish.

Her mom, Queen B, was large and in charge and very orange (12/23/14 death by heron, swim in peace).
Her dad, Shinto, is white with a red spot on his crown in the Tancho style of koi.

Somehow this has translated to Yiffy being golden with a weird black spot on her crown. We love her.
What do you think of her color change?

Another reason why I can't bring myself to cull fry. They are my pets, I don't raise them for money.

So far, nature ( and unfortunately my inexperience) has taken care of it. Meaning that I haven't had to cull.

I love to see their color changes. Vanilli is still working on becoming orange. Perhaps a photo of her next.

SPRING

Lots of spring pond chores.

1. Dose the pond with 10 grams of Prazi - for a suspected Fluke problem. I cast my stink-eye on the sellers of my 3 mail order goldfish. One has since passed.
2. Take a look at the GH and KH levels after a heavy rainy season. Found that they were below ideal. GH (7), KH (7),
3. Amend my 1000 gallon pond with equal amounts of calcium chloride and Epsom salts (
magnesium sulfate). I will add slowly add this mixture over the next week. About a pound each.

4. Test pH. ( 8.0 )

5. add an environmentally beneficial, completely non-toxic bacteria product  like Pond Perfect

6. Vacuum the mulm off the pond bottom, which is my small pond's equivalent of a water change.

7. Reverse backwash the bio filter, which is my small pond's equivalent of a water change.

8. Tend to the water lilies: do they need planting medium or fertilizer?

Do any of you pond keepers have any chores to add?

SUMMER

Here's a poor quality photo of the Ryukins and Goldie. I couldn't catch one of the amoonklein babies, but she's fine.
Perhaps doing the best, actually since I couldn't catch her, heh.
