Better To Wait?

Recommended Posts

Guest Romeo

I was wondering, is it better to wait to feed your fish stuff as oranges and fruit and stuff until the tank is cycled? As not to mess up the cycling or push any of the nitrates or nitrites or ammonia over the edge?

I wouldn't think it would make a difference. All uneaten food will decompose and produce ammonia, whether it's goldfish pellets, fruit, or a cheeseburger (note: don't attempt to feed cheeseburger). You actually need the ammonia if you want the tank to cycle. If the ammonia is too high, it's time for a water change.

Bottom line: type of food doesn't matter so much as the amount. Excess food should be cleaned up or it will create excess ammonia.

Some types of food will muck up the water faster than others. I wouldn't feed oranges or any other "messy" foods until the tank is cycled.
