  1. Hey everyone. I am new to the forum and joined because I am having an issue with 2 of my 7 comets. I have had my comets for almost 3 years and they are all over 10+ inches - not including the tail. 4 have short tails and 3 have fantails. 2 of the 3 fantails have sections of their tails that are stiff and on one the bottom of her tail is permanently rolled up in a tube shape. They all eat well and are given Hikari koi pellets, duck weed, shelled peas and worms from my compost from time to time. (the compost is maintained for my fish - I also keep Oscars and Severums). They are presently in a 180 gallon until I complete their pond (2000 litres - hopefully in the next 2 months or so). The tank is filtered by an undergravel filter...water changes are done every 2 days at 50% and the nitrates are always below 40. I have all of them since they were babies....2 of them I rescued from the feeder fish tank at my LFS...They have been well looked after and are otherwise very healthy. I have never had to treat any of them for any diseases. As they get older though I am noticing this thing happening with just these two fish. Could it be a hereditary defect? I would think if it was diet or the conditions I would be seeing it in more or all of the fish.??? Thanks Melody

Including this time, they have been treated with Prazi twice since I've had them. * Any unusual findings on the fish such as "grains of salt," bloody streaks, frayed fins or fungus? Yes - bloody streaks ONLY at the end of Clem's tail. Speckle's fins were bloody last week but appear to have healed a lot and the blood is almost gone for her. * Any unusual behavior like staying at the bottom, not eating, etc.? Nope - all have appetites, all very active, no darting, etc. Okay so I'm back!!! I did end up getting another little fishy, though I have no pictures at the moment and will have to show her off later. The tank is FULLY STOCKED now, haha. Writing again because Clem's red tail streaks from fighting with Mr. B still have not gone away. I don't think there's any underlying problem, but I'm going away for a week next week and I want to make sure that Clem doesn't end up being really sick while I'm gone. I'm going to try and get some pics for you - basically the bloody parts are only at the end of his tail, at all 4 "points". He is still active, hungry, and lively as ever. Nothing seems out of the ordinary except the bloody streaks. Does it just take some of them longer to heal than others? Thanks for any help

    Bloody Fish!

Hi Guys, So, a couple of months ago I bought a 19L Fluval Chi, And I put my 2 Danios in, and My 2 Minnows in it that I had from a previous tank, unfortunately, one of the danios died. and my mum has 1 of the minnows, sooooooo, when I bought the tank, I went and got a fantail, before any of you jump down my throat about the tank being too small, I know, but I wanted to have a goldfish for a few months, and recently, it stayed at the bottom of the tank, and it had little white spots all on its tail, and it was sluggish and didn't move much except for food, I've seen it move properly for the first time in a while earlier, and I found that on the top left part of it's tail it has a lot of blood, and in the top left part it has a little bit of blood coming from it, and on the bottom fin too. Please, someone help? Thanks, T
  5. I have an absolutely GORGEOUS double tail betta. I made the mistake of using a tetrasafe water decontaminate and it resulted in his tail and parts of his fins rotting. Lesson learned, I use only water left out for a few days. But now, it seems some of his tail has grown back. Is that even possible? He looked like a female after the damage was done but now he has that full male look and even some color back in the very bottom. I was very surprised! But I am so happy that my Yuki has his beauty back!
  6. Hello! This is my first time ever posting (and reading) in this forum, and I could really use your help! I'm a somewhat beginner fish owner, I've had my tank for 2 years but it's pretty simple and I don't know a whole ton about fish. Here's my problem though: I have 2 goldfish (the cheap 13 cent ones that you buy at the pet store) and they're both roughly 2 years old. In the past few weeks, one of them has started to have periods where he just sits at the top of the tank (not right up to the surface, but close) for 10-15 seconds, then he'll move around a bit and do it again. And within the past week I've noticed that his tail has started splitting right down the lines of it. It doesn't look shredded or like pieces are falling off, it's just literally splitting to about 3/4 of the way down. It doesn't look white at the tips or red anywhere, just hangs a little limply maybe. And other than the spacey-ness, he seems totally fine. I'm not sure if this is fin rot or something else. I haven't changed any decorations in the tank within the past 6 months, and nothing is sharp enough to cut him anyway. I started putting melafix in the tank last night, but today when I got home from work I noticed that there's another new tear. I have no clue what to do to help him! Please keep your suggestions somewhat basic or "dumbed down" because I don't know a lot of medications or what to do with them. I also do not have a separate tank that I can put him in to medicate him if need be. Here's what I can tell you about my tank: 16 gallons (yes I know it's too small for 2 goldfish) 2 goldfish, 1 pleco (just got him about a month ago) We've always had good water testing results (I'll do a test as soon as I get some new strips) I change about a quarter of the water every 2 weeks I treat the water with water conditioner, bacterial supplement, and aquarium salt (and now melafix for the past 2 days) The other fish I have vis completely healthy, and this seems to have come out of nowhere (it was a few extra days before I could change the water, but I don't think that's it). PLEASE HELP ME! I don't want to lose my little buddy.
  7. My oranda's fins are all bloody looking. They're torn apart, but symmetrical on both sides. I have two Chinese Algae eaters in the tank. Is this Finrot or do you think the algae eaters are biting at him? Or something else? He's eating just fine and swimming around like nothing is wrong. No outward displays of this problem other than the visual ones. Please help!
  8. My Ryunkin Goldfish that I just got about 2 weeks ago got its tail bit off when I first got him. 2 weeks ago I had two huge fish, one a goldfish and one a koi fish, that were both bullying him a lot. This was after I had already decided that my 40 gallon tank was too big for the two huge fish. The fish had bit most of the ryunkin goldfish's tail off, so I immediately seperated them. I had no seperate tank so I kept him in a bowl for about 4 days until my two big fish got picked up to go to a pond. I have him back in the tank but while he was in his bowl his tail started to turn black. It has been getting back to its original color but I have some questions. 1. Is the black on his tail ammonia poisoning? 2. Will he be ok if it is ammonia poisoning? 3. Will the tail grow back? 4. If so should I let it grow naturally, or give him some sort thing to speed up the process?

    Goldfish with T-shape tail

hi guys, I have bought a telescope eye goldfish with a very weird tail. I looks like it has a joined tail but it actually does a T shape (upside down). I've read goldfish books and looked everywhere on the web about info on this type of tail. Does anyone have any info on this? Is it a new breed? I will provide photo later on. Thanks in advance. Let me make it more clear. The tail is not connected only on the top to create a pyramid shape. It actually is one single fin going down to the middle and then 2 other fins split up. Creating the shape T upside down. The goldfish is a tricolor (or nacreus) telescope eye. I will add photos when i can. I have heard of something called web-tail but don't know this is that case.
