  1. Hi all, Starting a new 55 gal and wondered if anyone has used Petco Black Aquarium Sand. When I look at the bags it doesn't say what it's made of or the grit size. Any input would be appreciated. I got my tank etc from the LFS but need to cut some costs where I can for when it's time to bring the the star attractions home Kat

  3. Okay so looking into all the white, black, black and white, golden sands I have changed my mind about getting white and I am going for gold. My question is, is that I am looking for playsand or something like that to put in my tank. I am kinda weary about chemicals from the sand so do you guys have any suggestions about play sand types that would be safe?
  4. Sorry about the pictures. Kinda crappy
  5. So, in efforts to change up my tank as well as them being a little healthier I'm going to switch from gravel to sand. My progold and hikari are almost the same color as some of the gravel that's currently in the tank (brown) ... My question is how many twenty pound bags would I need to fill my 55 and my 80?
  6. Hey guys, One of my least favorite parts of this hobby is dealing with wonky technology! Especially since I have no idea about these things. These past few days my canister filter in my 50Gal community tank has started making noises. First the usual 'I have air in me' whistling which I ignored and decided to deal with when doing the water change, then since yesterday it seems to go from high to low/no speed by itself. And finally this morning it started making grinding noises. Since I have had sand with that filter for about 3/4months, I figured some sand might be messing with the motor. So I took it apart, washed all the 'machine parts' well and rinsed out the filter materials. Turned it back on, the noise is gone but now it has basically zero power. Thankfully, I have another filter running on that tank so I turned it off for now. I have a few ideas of what the issue could be; 1. could the sand have broken something? When I emptied it about a tablespoon of my old black sand came out. So it has been in there for 1week+ at least. 2. Thing is, I have stockings wrapped around the intake because I don't want my kuhli loaches to test their daredevil selves and go into the canister! So 1. How can sand even go in if I have the intakes wrapped. 2. Could the wrapped intakes be the cause for the slower flow? Somehow clogging the intake? Ugh! Any suggestions? I can feel the need to get a new filter coming around!
  7. Hi! I'm in the process of changing my tank completely over. I have gravel that I am getting rid of thankfully, I dislike it immensely. I have read about river rocks and have some from Michaels Craft store that I used as a base for my Tillandsia and I have extra. I was wondering if I can use the bigger ones as accent rocks? Also I was looking into getting the CaribSea Tahitian Moon Sand and actually picked up a bag, but now I am not sure if it's the right one. I picked up The CarbSea Super Naturals where Tahitian Moon is checked off on the back (I am assuming now it is referring to color?). But there was also CaribSea Instant Aquarium in a black color, I did not pick up that bag to look at it as I thought I had the correct one.
  8. I just bought some black sand from Petco today and I got home to rinse it, but the water is still black. I put all the sand (10lbs) into a 5 gallon bucket and I'm just running water through it. I put the garden hose all the way at the bottom and have been continuously running water. it's been over an hour already and the water is still pitch black. Is this just the paint from the Petco sand coming off or is it just SUPER dust?
  9. I'm confused. I used to have crystal clear water before and after water changes, then the last few weeks no matter what I do the water is gross (with floaty food/poo bits, not bacteria/algae bloom) >55g, 4 fish under 2 inches, AC110 (500gph), AC70(300gph), Eheim Ecco Pro 2236(185gph) = total 985gph <-- fish fever >AC's have extra media, biological and mechanical >The last month they are fed NLS twice a day, finished within 2 mins, frozen bloodworms once or twice a week. >W/C 80% twice a week and params are all 0% with ammonia going max 0.25 >Filters were being cleaned every 3 weeks but now more often.. even after cleaning tubes/media/plastic compartments/intake it still sputters poo/food out when restarted (In fact AC70 and Eheim are both new from this week since my AC50 and Topfin20-haha.. both died last week) Is it the impeller area? Is it the Caribsea instant TMS I added June 19th? AC70 was added last Friday and today there wasn't any difference in the appearance of the water, installed the Eheim today so I will let you know tomorrow if there's a difference. I was thinking of adding filter floss.. but besides that what do you think is going on and what can I do?
  10. I made a few changes to my tank decor today, and I like the results! I think it looks better in person than in the video. When I look at the videos and photos I'm a little disappointed, but then I go look at the real thing and I love it. lol Soon I'll be getting new tank lights, so I'm going to make a better video showing it off after that. Right now my lighting is not very good because most of the light bulbs burned out. Anyway, the fish seem really excited about their new scenery! They keep going around grabbing mouthfuls of sand and chewing on it. To skip the blabbing, just start the video @ 6:18. Oh! And this is just one 20lb. bag of Tahitian Moon Sand! It was surprisingly enough to cover the bottom of the 75g tank. And I anchored the plants by tying suction cups to them with fishing line and suctioning them to the bottom glass.
  11. Hey guys! I have a 75 gallon discus bare bottom tank. I want to add white sand as my substrate now. Myquestions: 1) How should I clean it before i put it in the aquarium so it doesn't cloud? 2) WHAT FILTER IS SAFE WITH SAND OTHER THAN A SPONGE FILTER??

  13. Hi folks!!! I've been recently given what I was told was a 120 gallon tank. TOTALLY old school, i.e., chrome banding on all edges and chrome top. This tank is at least 30 years old if a day! However, one does not look a gift tank in the mouth. The tank dimensions are 16"w x 22"t x 63"L. A friend said that it actually calculated out to 87 gallons which sounds like an odd number to me but maybe this was originally custom made I cleaned and rinsed the tank to within an inch of it's life with vinegar and baking soda to remove the deposits, filled it with water and let it sit and cycle for a week before I added my fishies Right now it is bare bottom with 3 large rocks that it came with. The former owner also gave me all "gravel" which looks lke the large stones used in landscaping as ground cover. Having said THAT, here's my question. It is my desire to turn this into a planted aquarium and I REALLY want to do black sand. However, the chrome banding is 2 inches all around, i.e., top, sides and bottom. Which means if I even want the sand to be visible I would have to bring it to the level of the chrome banding. I was thinking of using the original stone first as a bottom layer/filler and then adding the sand on top? Is this feasible? Anyone have any suggestions? Or am I just SOL? Thanks a bunch! FishyMom
