  1. My favorite goldie is isolating himself, so I'd really appreciate some help with how to treat him. I have a 75 gal aquarium, with 3 filters (75 g - 120 g filters), plus 2 large oxygen bars. I do a 50-75% water change once a week. I have 3 orandas, 1 ryukin, 1 black moore, 1 mixed baby, and 1 ranchu. I have had all of these for over a year, except the baby. Two of them successfully mated. My PH is pretty high, around 8.1-8.2. I currently have no gravel in the aquarium, bc I was waiting to move the aquarium once more before getting everything just perfect (we're going through a remodel). My ranchu, who would previously be social and dart around the aquarium with excitement, now spends his days inside the dark castle, completely isolated. He will come out for feeding, but only after a few minutes of me calling for him. I haven't noticed any damaged fins or suspicious spots. He is not floating or sinking, just choosing to isolate himself all the time. Any suggestions on what I can do? He is my absolute favorite. Will update with parameters this afternoon.
  2. AO Ranchu and Gingyo

Hello JAPAN ORNAMENTAL FISH FAIR is being held in Tokyo now. I went to the competitive show and took some videos. Today, I would like to know how those color of goldfish called in ENGLISH. And I would like to know whether you distinguish following two type of Goldfish or not. One is Ao Ranchu in Japanese. Ao means Blue. another one is called Gingyo. Gin means silver. Ginyo is categorized as Common type not Ranchu even though Gingyo also doesn't have dosal fin. Their shape are longer than Ao Ranchu. Ao Ranchu was developed by Fukami-san, one of famous japanese breeder , by corossbreeding normal Ranchu and Seibun Oranda. I'm also not sure how Seibun Oranda is called in ENGLISH. On the other hands, Gingyo is from China and No one know the beginning. Unfortunately Gingyo doesn't exist in China now. Long long ago, Japan imported Gingyo and taken over. Sorry my ENGLISH is alwasy broken.
  3. Happy Holidays, everyone! I've been away for a while, but I'm back for a bit, and ready to lurk around my favorite goldfish forums and see how everyone's doing! My little ranchu, Bubbles, has grown quite a bit over the past year and a half--I've included her/his baby pic with a current pic to see how much she/he's grown. In case you were wondering, I feed my fish Repashy Soilent Green, the occasional frozen bloodworms and peas, and Omega One pellets.
  4. Hi There! My new Ranchu Xena has been in QT for 3.5 weeks now with salt as indicated. She has these small growths on her Wen which I thought might be pimples and go away on their own, no such luck! A couple went black and now she also has a green shadow on her tails fins.. They have had Fluke solve as prevention and Kanaplex. Week 1 + 2 When the white things appeared I did a touch of Pimafix. Week 3. Now just clean water. 5. Small Photoshoot!

I was too lazy to bring out the camera, so I used my phone instead Today I added Alvin (Blue Oranda) into the main tank! He would not stop following Moon! I think he was lonely in QT and was just so happy to see another goldfish his size. He kept trying to just lean on Moon and be as close as possible; I wish I had recorded it! It was just absolutely adorable! Here is a little Bushy Nose Pleco hatchling Video:
  6. How many peas are to many?

I just put my baby Ranchu into her 20g long 3 days ago, from quarantine, and she definitely is an eater.. Her diet consists of 1 pea a day, and some freeze dried blood worms. However, I notice that she is always begging, and she eats all of her food in well under 1 minute. Could I possibly feed her 2 peas a day? Is that too much fiber? Or should I amp up the bloodworms that I feed, I'm just not sure.... I feed her a pea everyday because of the floaty problems she has when she was in QT, she likes them, so, I just stuck with it. She is an inch and 5 cm, and she is definitely growing, just wondering - can I feed her more peas?
  7. Hello everyone! A few days ago I woke up to find Lemon, my year and three month old Ranchu, with a collapsed mouth. I found a vet near where I live who can do surgery to repair it on Saturday, but I thought everyone might find it an interesting thing, since I haven't seen this or even heard of this issue before. I'm not sure if I'm even posting in the right place about this. I don't need diagnosis or anything, since he's seeing the vet soon, but it's interesting info anyway. Here's a picture of his "normal" mouth (He had a deformed mouth when I picked him up from walmart): Here is his mouth now: I hope to post pictures after the surgery. He will have to have a brace on for at least 5 days, from what I'm being told. By the way if you guys want to contribute to the cost of his surgery, I would appreciate it. https://www.gofundme.com/lemonsurgery (Let me know if I'm allowed to link to that? I'm not sure)

  10. Some of my ranchus!

Say hello to my lil friends!
  11. Well.. once again Im experiencing dropsy.. (So yes Taryl, Im a horrible fishkeeper, Lol..jk ) I have 2 mailed lionheads that arrived in March 30, in what it seemed to be good conditions They're still in a 20G QT One is (still) in perfect conditions but the other black/bronze one started to get red pimples and excessive slime on the wen a few days after arrival so I notified the seller and he recommended a few (10 second) peroxide dips. First dip.. good Second dip.. a little more time to recoup and some sideways Third deep.. more time to recoup and lethargic On April 12 I noticed some prickle to the scales but didn't think any of it since I was told that ranchus sometimes experience that without being sick I sent today some pictures to the seller and he corroborates that it is an early stage of dropsy but cannot recommend anything specific since it could be caused by different internal problems.. pristine water along with antibac water treatment and/or medicated food is his suggestion Im doing the questionnaire in a few minutes.. Thanks! Here's what I've done so far Mar 30: Arrival, covered tank Mar 30 -1: De-stress days (just WC & double prime) Apr 2: 75%WC + 76g salt (.1%) Apr 3: add 76g salt (.2%) Apr 4: 100%WC + 228g salt (.3%) Apr 6: 75%WC + 170g salt (.3%) Apr 8: 75%WC + 170g salt Apr 10: 75%WC + 170g salt + 10sec peroxide dip (8:1 ratio) Apr 12: 75%WC + 170g salt + 10sec peroxide dip Apr 14: 75%WC + 170g salt Apr 16: 10sec peroxide dip prior to WC 100%WC + 76g salt (to reduce at .1%) + .2g prazi powder Apr 8: 75%WC + 56g salt (.1%) + .2g prazi powder
  12. Hey yall! While our tank is cycling I have been dreamily looking for our future fishy friends. There is a LFS here in Austin (Austin Aquadome) that carries plenty of little Ryukin (my wife has already decided upon that as the type she wants), they also have some baby black ranchu (they are just slightly bigger than 1 inch, SO ADORABLE!!!!). I originally thought I would want an oranda of some sort (not redcap though, they all look the same to me) and this store only has redcap orandas. So I have been steadily falling more in love with ranchu. Anyways, my question is, do black ranchu usually stay completely black? Or are they known to lose the black like most orandas do as they mature and grow? Personally, I don't mind losing the black, in fact I would prefer it! I love surprises! So I guess what I want to know is, if I were to pick out one of these adorable little black ranchu, will it stay solid black forever? Or since I want some color, should I just go with one of the small orange ones instead? Thanks in advance for any input, or advice. And please feel free to add some pictures if any of you have any black ranchu!
  13. Hues Of Gold - the experience

Day One: Today is day 1 of my journey into goldfish. To find out more about me, please visit my profile! So,my current project into goldfish is setting up a 20 gallon tank. Now yes, yes I am aware of the gallons per fish rule. And not to fret, I will only be purchasing One goldie for this tank. This 20 gallon tank is the perfect example of your typical 80-90's aquarium. Wood-grain trim, with a lovely wooden stand. So, you get the picture. It isnt exactly...perfect,I Personally prefer a minimalist look to tanks to show case the fish. With this being said my plan is to have a black background, black bare bottom, and touch up the stand with a shiney black redo. I will be also making a trip over to my local auto store to pick up some black trim tape to redo the trim on the tank. Today I picked up 3 bottles of black matte paint from Five Below and a can of black spray paint from wal mart. So this is phase one. When I got back home I tested the water on my 10 gallon divided aquarium that is home to my betta's. Everything checked out at 0 and pH was at 7.2 so it seems like everything is good to go! I will be using the media from my 10 gal to start it up in the 20. I will post pictures as I do my tank and stand. *Note: This blog is meant to be written like taking notes in a journal, so excuse any poor grammar. Just jotting down my thoughts as they come! 14. I have had this ranchu in QT for the last 7 weeks.. The first days he was super active, strong & even a little of a bully to the roommate, a smaller ranchu At the second week of QT, he started to pinecone so I started treating as usual (metro, kana & epsom combo) Pinecone went away but the ranchu wasn't interested in food.. not eating at all from Oct 10 to Oct 25 I tried syringe feed several times hoping something went in He started to eat kinda normal on Nov 3 after starting a prazi powder round but stopped again on Nov 6 and he hasn't eat anything since then The symptoms are: No eating, Swollen body, Heavy breathing, Extra slime Here below is the treatment I followed since day one so you can see what have I done Sep 24: Arrival Sep 24-27: De-stress days (just WC & double prime) Sep 28: 100%WC + 76g salt(morning) + 76g salt (evening) Sep 29: 76g salt (to reach .3%) Sep 30: 100WC + 228g salt + prazipro double dose (1st round) Oct 2: 100WC + 228g salt + prazi redose (double) Oct 4: 100WC (removing all prazi) + 228g salt Oct 5: Starting to feed Metro flakes Oct 6: 100WC + 228g salt + Metro flakes Oct 8: 100WC + 228g salt + prazipro double dose (2nd round) + Metro Flakes Oct 9: Here I saw the pincone in one of the chus & the other one laying sideways, plus spitting out the metro flakes Oct 10: 100WC (remove all prazi) 1Tsp Epsom + Metro powder (1st) + Kana powder (1st) Oct 12: 100WC + 2 Tsp Epsom + Metro powder (2nd) + Kana powder (2nd) Oct 14: 100WC + 2 Tsp Epsom + Metro powder (3rd) + Kana powder (3rd) Oct 16: 100WC + 2 Tsp Epsom + Metro powder (4th) + Kana powder (4th) Oct 18: 100WC + Prazi single + Metro powder (5th) + Kana powder (5th) Oct 20: 100WC + Prazi single re-dose + Metro powder (6th) + Kana powder (6th) Oct 22: 100WC to get all meds out Oct 24: 100WC Oct 26: 100WC Oct 28: 100WC Oct 30: 100WC Nov 2: 100WC + 76g salt + Aqua prazi (powder) Nov 4: 100WC + 76g salt + Prazi powder (re-dose) Nov 6: 100WC + 76g salt Nov 8: 50WC Nov 9: 100WC + 76g salt + Aqua prazi (powder) Nov 11: 100WC + 76g salt + Aqua prazi (redose) THIN BODY SWOLLEN BODY HEAVY BREATHING PLEASE HELP US!!!

  16. Howdy from Ohio!

Hey everyone! I've heard so much about Koko's, and especially about the superior disease diagnosis/treatment plans that goes on here, and I've finally joined! I've been keeping goldfish for 5 years now, but have been keeping tropical freshwater and saltwater fish since I was 10 years old... so 19 years! I really love fish -- they are very calming to me. I got into goldfish keeping since I heard they can live forever, and I thought it would be cool to still have fish in my 40's that I got in my 20's. I currently have 7 goldfish. I got my first 3 fish 5 years ago -- 2 ryukin's and a veiltail from my local fish store. I got my pearlscale 3 years ago (I also got a ranchu 2 years ago, but my niece fell in love with him so I gave him to her as her first fish). I got another ryukin and 2 ranchu last year when I upgraded the size of their aquarium. All of my current fish are from my local fish store. I set up a 29 and am expecting 2 new ranchu's from Coast Gem USA tomorrow! Please comment and tell me all about yourselves and your fish too! Instagram: @bridgemitch

Bottom sitting For the past 4 days Skipper has been just bottom sitting, he will come out of the corner when being fed, but after that he will just sit at the bottom. I started a maintenance round of prazi (no salt) just to be on the safe side. He shows no other signs of being ill other than bottomsitting. I am wondering if it could be something internal. All other 3 fish in tank are active and doing fine. Could I just be paranoid? After loosing Citrus I don't want to take any chances.
  18. My little pond :)

No bottom sitting and red streaks are gone, so he's back with the gang in the 75 http://vid40.photobucket.com/albums/e235/cdionne77/20150828_230620_zps1yvjfzac.mp4 Sushi my son's new Oranda is still in QT and not quite ready for his 20g http://vid40.photobucket.com/albums/e235/cdionne77/20150829_002057_zpsp399azkl.mp4

  21. Hi all I have a 30 gallon tank (Juwel Lido 120) that has not finished cycling yet. I like Ranchus and Orandas and cannot make up my mind wether to get 2 Ranchus, 2 Orandas or one of each when my tank is finally cycled. My concerns with the three options are: - Ranchus: is Juwel Lido 120 too deep for Ranchus, will I just have 2 fish swimming at the bottom? - Orandas: will they get too big for the 30 gallon tank? - One of each: Will they be ok with each other when the Oranda outgrow the Ranchu. Anyone has experience with this pair? Please let me know what you think. Many thanks! Will
  22. My piggies eating broccoli

Funny thing is, they don't know it's good for them Citrus on the other hand could care less about proper nutrition. She doesn't like her veggies http://vid40.photobucket.com/albums/e235/cdionne77/20150808_175153_zpsl0z09vun.mp4
  23. Hi everyone, I didn't think I would ever do it, but I finally got a 75 gallon Well, I really didn't have a choice as the fishes needed room, The two babies are now 7 months old and I needed to take them out of the 20 gallon and I rescued the blue Oranda so the 40 was too small for Citrus, Skipper and MoJo so bla bla ba I got the 75 with absolutely no grief from the hubby Here is the set up. Now have a AC 110 and AC 70 for filtration. It's coudy because of the Koi Clay I added This is MoJo the blue oranda. This is what he looked like when I got him back in March of this year. The next pic is him now. MoJo now. pic is a little blurry as he never holds still The big guy on the right is Bubba. On the left is Moon-Shine.( They are a mix of Oranda and Ranchu) and are the offspring of Citrus and Skipper Moon-Shine Skipper my love bug Citrus my sweet baby girl Everyone happy as a clam. Sorry for blurry pics Shark bait the Albino bristle nose wasn't in the pics as he's just a baby and is always hiding
  24. My fancy goldfish pond...

There were a couple new things that I added to my pond which made a huge impact. One being a half barrel bio filter which was an upgrade from my prefilter media that I had used for years and thought to be enough. Second, a larger UV light when combined with the bio filter made a big difference in the water quality.
