I went to the San Diego Koi Show. It was held on March 7th and 8th, 2015. I went on the second day. There were a lot of gorgeous koi of all sizes. These photos are some of the ones I found most intriguing and beautiful. It's hard to tell, but many of these are huge, 24"-36" or larger!

I was looking at a Koi web site and realized that my koi is considered small. As someone who doesn't breed or raise koi, but is merely an admirer of them, can you tell me why bigger is considered better in the koi world? Cat and dog owners don't consider a bigger cat better than a smaller one, the same with dogs or birds. Is it a cultural thing? Meaning, is the size of one's pet more important in Japan or China? If I did breed koi, I'd try to select for the most beautiful and interesting offspring, not the largest - size would be irrelevant. Why isn't there a market for mini-koi, like toy Yorkshire terriers? Tiny little anchovy sized koi? Kawaii!

Hey everyone! I've been saying I'm going to post pond photos for a while now and I finally got some new ones today! But first a little info about the pond. It's been running since spring 2007 and has 6 adult koi in it. At 3500 gallons some say that's understocked, but I attribute my lack of problems to this. I don't have plans to add any more fish to it for now for that reason. Low-maintenance is good! Without further ado, here it is! This was the pond in early April. And here it is today! Now some adorable photos of the koi. (okay I cheated those last four were from last summer but the water has been so cloudy from all the rain.) And bonus winter snow shot! This was the massive storm that swept through the SE USA this past winter. This is the most snow I've ever seen on the pond. Normal snows in my hometown look more like this:

I am currently working on designing a pond for my yard! Right now I have a 8x6 irregular shaped design, it is 3.5 ft deep in the middle: Does anyone on here LOVE math, and want to calculate the gallons for this thing?! XD I think I will go to the math forum and ask volume calculation of irregular objects is really not my area. It has a raised edge, but it will not be filled to the top of the raised edge, it is really just to make it harder for animals to fish, and to redirect runoff. If I have enough space I would like to put in koi, but maybe I will stick to a whole bunch of goldfish! I did not place a filter or aerator in my design sketch, but they will be there. the weird looking rectangles on the right are painted cinderblock hideouts. I am trying to make it as "raccoon proof" as possible (more here) Any ideas? Improvements? This will be really fun to dig!

Last Saturday (the 28th) attended the Northwest koi and goldfish show in Portland Oregon! Here's some pictures I took: Beautiful koi at over 2' long! I wanted to buy one of these guys! But I couldn't believe how much they costed! $250 a piece!!! A pearl scale, moor and fantail for sale This guy was also for sale. I felt awful, because I could see he was suffering from specticemia. I really wouldve picked this guy up, but he was $300 dollars (not kidding!) and it was too much of a risk. Beautiful ranchu and oranda in the showing room (not for sale) Beautiful oranda for sale. I went just about insane not being able to buy this guy! This koi looked like a block of cheese to me! Still, it's a beautiful fish. Panda moor! Very cute & small! Thanks for looking!!!

Finished the first mitten. This is the left mitten. The right one has the fish facing the other way, so when you put your hands together it looks like they are kissing.
