  1. Last week, while buying catfood at the LPS, I saw exasperated Fish Section people, and noticed its cause: a woman buying some neon tetras. Turned out, this woman had just set up the tank the previous day! Had no idea what cycling was! Her previous fish had all died during an ice storm-induced power outage a few weeks back, and she was restarting the tank from scratch! Thankfully, I was friendly and seemed to know what I was talking about, so she listened to me. I told her about cycling. I told her what to do in case of another power failure: put the filter "stuff" into pantyhose or some other mesh and suspend it in the tank water, stop feeding the fish, and do a big water change once the power's restored. I met with her later that day to give her a square of my own established filter material in a baggie of tank water, to seed her tank. Now these little tetras (and the other fish she'll add) won't be poisoned with their own wastes! I feel like a fish hero.
