  1. Recently I noticed that there was a bruise-like black area are under Spud's eye. It wasn't there before and also some of his scales looks like they are falling off. Any advice and should I be worried ?
  2. Gizmo is a 2 year old blackmoor and she has been suffering from a bad case of popeye for almost three weeks, as well as a swim bladder issue. Both appeared around the same time. She is in a 55 gallon tank with her brothers, pearl scale and an oranda. The water has always been pristine and I spend a lot of time taking care of them. Gizmo has been in isolation for two weeks, with a round of erythromycin for five days, it did nothing. I then used Tetracycline for the last six days, and I thought it was clearing up but I just found her laying on her side and breathing heavy at the bottom. I got her in the big tank thinking she needed oxygen and she is swimming okay but her eye is huge, and she keeps returning to floating on her back at the bottom. I am so desperate for some advice. Thank you .
  3. New fish aggression.

Morning! I'm happy I found you guys, I have some concerns I need help with. I have a 25 gallon tank with one red fancy goldfish and one white fancy. I just bought the white one last night. He was acting very stressed as they usually do when being put into a new environment. He would stay at the bottom occasionally swimming around then sitting still. This morning I noticed my red fancy, Cleo, has been nipping at my white fancy, Ramses. Ramses does have one patch without scales. And one of his little fins before his big tail fins (I'm not sure if the technical term) looks abnormal or mutated. It's not a flowy fin, it looks "rolled up" sort of. His other fins are not clamped so I don't think it's that. I'm not sure if Cleo is picking on him because he is new or because he may be a little weaker, it may be both. He is still staying at the bottom of the tank but he is scavenging and moving about a lot more than yesterday. He will go to the middle of the tank some but not a lot. I feel this may be because of him getting picked on. I'm thinking about getting a 10 gallon to house him in until his scales grow back and see what I can do about his little fin (I should have named him nemo). What do you guys think? Is it just territory aggression that will dissipate or is this something bigger? Thank you so much for your help! Kenzi L.
  4. Hi guys! I've recently purchased a bunch of orandas and one ryukin from a owner who could no longer look after them and they were in quite bad shape (they were sold to me in a dirty mop bucket and murky brown water ). When I got them home and put them in my tank, they were quite lethargic and just kind of sat on the bottom of the tank, I noticed then their fins were clamped up and almost all of them have veining in their tails. I followed the advice of my local petstore and they advised me to just add aquarium salt and they will get better over time. Its been about 2 months since I've bought them and I've noticed they are swimming much more actively, eating normally, and the fins don't seem to be as clamped up anymore. Was just wondering what else I can do to help out my goldfish as their tails still have the veining in them - will this ever go away? there is one smaller oranda who's anal/lower bottom fins are still very much clamped up - is there any other way apart from aquarium salt to help this? Another seemed to have a bit of fungal growth but the aquarium salt hasn't seemed to help it much, would you advise me to use multicure (it freaked me out the last time it turned my tank green for a week ) I have a 6ft tank and there's 6 orandas, 1 ryukin and 4 plecos and a few guppies. Hope you guys can help Anal Fins Clamping Fin/Tail Veining White/Pearl Scales on end of dorsal fin - not sure if fungal/bacterial?

I decided to increase water change frequency to help it heal by doing water change every day, 10gs. (usually only do 2 water changes a week 10gs each-plants take care of nitrates). Poop is healthy brown color, forages/eats and swims around just fine, no gasping, lethargy, or swim issues of any sort. Today I noticed the white area has a raised bump like a pimple and there is now a small red sore next to the white area too. These are the only sighs of anything being wrong. Photos of the wound (sorry for quality) edit: 1 more photo I wanted to know if this is just a bruise of some sort or something much worse like a tumor or cysts? Going to go do a water change now.
  6. "Velvet"is looking velvety

Hello, my name is Annette, and this is my reaching out to your community for help regarding my little two and a half inch black moor. He and my female oranda live in a 35 gallon that is filled to 32 , I know they should be in a 40, but I change the water every five days half way. I am wondering though, what at is happening to my moor. Yesterday I was somewhat startled by what was happening on his back fins. But now it has been another new morning and this appearance was even more prevalent. The two have ich , which was introduced when the heater broke leaving them at a durastic 58 from a usual 72. I brought the temperature back up as usual it knowing my actions. They are fighters. I bought rid ich on May 24th . Used it until it ran out daily with water changes. going back to buy a second bottle from kordon I accidentally grabbed malachite green. I didn't notice until the day after . I decided to go with .05 mg/l daily , and lights out like this and many sites suggested. because of the less effectiveness when otherwise etc, is is it too harsh on them maybe? Or itbis less effective without the formaldehyde/fermalyn (sp?) he used to be the liveliest and would chase my oranda for days in attempts to spawn with her when the 80degree gradual rise happened on May 24th etc they eat blood worms and tithra green's home made gel food recipes ich has half veggies and meat as well as sinking pellet food occasionally in hopes that their immune will stay up. I was soaking their food in a bit of garlic & water mix a week ago. salt is safer, but I found it didn't really work before and it caused slight bloat in my oranda so I stopped doing that last time. Of course gorges on velvets food so he was probably just baxkdd up now that I think about it I introduced a 1% salt solution at 11 am this morning and did a immediate halt to malachite green after their sixth morning dose today. I put activated carbon in the filter. And did a 50%water change just wondering if I should do salt, or if that is useless in this occasion as it is more than ich that he has I don't know how to imbed a video but here is a link to velvet sorry it is so short it Is kind of like he is a bit milky . the water has been at 80f for quite a while now I guess
  7. I got my first pair of goldfish yesterday and am trying to get them use to feeding.. where they came from fed floating pellets which I've been told is bad as they can suck in air and get swim bladder (sb) issues. So I bought sinking Hikari Goldfish pellets as that's what was available (if there are better pellet brands you'd like to recommend please do so). Now I'm just having trouble getting them use to me in front of tank+ removing hood=food.. I don't want to foul the water leaving pellets in to land and since I used Black Diamond 'sand' substrate the food tends to blend in a bit. One of them-a blue-black oranda I think is the color term- keeps going into the anubias when I open the lid so having a hard time getting them to see pellets, the other a calico fantail has no problem staying out in the open but only wants to eat pellets as they sink not after they hit the substrate. I soaked the pellets in water for 2+ minutes with a bit of DIY garlic exact before each feeding attempt. I'm curious if anyone has used feeding dishes to put pellets or other foods in at the bottom without having a mess all over the substrate? I might just be over thinking it as a new goldfish owner (not new to fish-have tropicals, other cold water (white cloud minnows), dwarf shrimp, and bettas), since they're the first fish that could eat plants that I've kept with plants.. don't want them making a salad bar out of the anubias because they haven't figured out sinking pellets yet...I put in a cucumber with them, seen a few pecks at it but not much. Anyways any helpful tips would be appreciated!
  8. So I have owned goldfish for over a year now and wanted to upgrade tanks. I got a much larger one, 60 gallons, and want to go to a lowish tech planted tank. I just had a few questions. One is when I cycle, do I do it with plants in or do the plants go in afterwards. Also, will plants do ok on fluorescent bulbs? I was hoping to use the ones that came with the tank. Lastly, does liquid CO2 work ok? At the moment I don't want to invest in a system and the plants I am looking at are not very high maintenance.
  9. Concerned About My Ranchu

I'm not really sure what's been up with my Ranchu as of late. I will start off by the initial problem I am concerned about. We've had the fish for about six months now. A few weeks ago, one of his eyes became cloudy (as seen in the pictures), but now the other one has developed this problem a few days ago and both the eyes are like this now. My other two fish (a fantail and a black moor) are perfectly fine, but he often eats quite a bit and ingests a lot of air. Now I have tried everything from the pea to the sinking pellets, and then he seems fine for a few days and then goes back to the floating again. We feed them a varied diet such as: brine shrimp, bloodworms, peas, and then pellets. I am wondering if these two problems are linked? I have done endless amounts of research but can't pinpoint the exact problem he has. He has an appetite and looks healthy aside from those two issues. There is zero ammonia in the tank and the pH levels are on point. Weekly water changes are done. Can anyone give me pointers on what this could be?Thank you so much! Also, to treat this should I separate him from the others? What treatments can I do for him?
  10. Dropsy D:

I'm a big stump on what is happening to my poor fishy. I have a black fancy goldfish who currently has dropsy. She still eats and I've been feeding her pees while her medicated food comes via mail. She's had dropsy for but now. But so far she's really fighting to stay alive so I'm detrmend to get her feeling better. I've been doing Epsom salt baths which looks like really helps her because she starts swimming around once she's back in the quarantine tank. Problem I'm having is I keep change her water because it gets dirty like the next day a rally of things are inside the tank attached to the walls of aquarium. It looks like she's able to digest the pees because green poop comes out but like I said I'm stumped with the additional items unidentifiable in the tank. At fist I thought the filter was the problem so I removed it. But still happened. Need help ; ~ ; I use aquarium water from main tank whic has below water levels. PH - 7.0 Ammonia - .25ppm Nitrite- 0ppm nitrate .50 ppm Tempature at 80F Using melafix pimafix Any suggestion is really appreciated.
  11. Moving Rooted Plants?

So my 29g planted tank has absolutely no aquascaping or planning. Basically, I threw in lots of plants and waited to see which ones would stick. And that was fine, at the time. . . But now I want a tank with structure, grace, and lilys that aren't in the foreground. So how does one safely remove deeply rooted plants without harming them? Thanks guys! E
  12. Dropsy help needed

Hi guys, My redcap oranda appears to have dropsy Would anyone be able to give me some advice on whats the best thing to do please. Hes been separated from the tank so hes now on his own. Hopefully these photos help Thank you
  13. Hi everyone. This is the third post I've made, now, concerning Dorito, my ranchu. She's not been well for a long time, and it seems like I've pretty much tried everything I can think of. I don't know what else to do. I'm posting again because she's not better and also because she's now started to get sores on her belly from bottom sitting... Here's a background: I got Dorito from ECR back in December (I think) of last year. She was awesome, adjusted well to the tank, got along with the other fish, and had no swimming issues for about 3 months or so. Then, she started to look like she was losing her balance, and eventually became a habitual bottom-sitter. She's been like this at least since March-April of this year. I treated for flukes, multiple times. I gave her 0.3% salt baths, I treated her with MMs twice, for a full course. I talked with Cynthia to see if she could think of anything that might be wrong. Nothing helped. Dorito still eats readily, hasn't lost any weight...she just looks so sad and is always in the corner at the bottom of the tank. It's almost as if she's too heavy to swim - when she tries to move upward, she can't. Her head weighs her back down. Here are my test results: Test Results for the Following: * Ammonia Level(Tank) 0 * Nitrite Level(Tank) 0 * Nitrate level(Tank) 10-20 * Ammonia Level(Tap) 0 * Nitrite Level(Tap) 0 * Nitrate level(Tap) 0 * Ph Level, Tank (If possible, KH, GH and chloramines) 8-8.2 * Ph Level, Tap (If possible, KH, GH and chloramines) 8.6++ Other Required Info: * Brand of test-kit used and whether strips or drops? * Water temperature? 74˚F * Tank size (how many gals.) and how long has it been running? 75 gallons, 1.5 years * What is the name and "size of the filter"(s)? Eheim 2217 canisters x2 * How often do you change the water and how much? 70-75%, twice weekly * How many days ago was the last water change and how much did you change? 3 days ago, 70% * How many fish in the tank and their size? 6, 3 under 4", one 4", 2 around 6" * What kind of water additives or conditioners? Seachem Prime, Vita Chem Freshwater vitamins, Buff it Up * What do you feed your fish and how often? 2-3x per day, a variety: bloodworms, brine shrimp, krill, peas, repashy soilent green, NLS thera A, NLS goldfish * Any new fish added to the tank? No * Any medications added to the tank? No * List entire medication/treatment history for fish and tank. Please include salt, Prazi, PP, etc and the approximate time and duration of treatment. Prazi treatment, spring 2014; "heavy" prazi treatment July-August 2014 (according to rules found here in the masterpost), MMs 2x over the summer, salt baths over the past 2 weeks, every few days * Any unusual findings on the fish such as "grains of salt," bloody streaks, frayed fins or fungus? See description * Any unusual behavior like staying at the bottom, not eating, etc.? See description Really hoping you guys can help. I feel so sad looking at her on the bottom of the tank. But...she still eats. Sometimes, lately, she's been listing to one side...
  14. Hi, I'm new here and I am looking for some advice and I would love if someone can help me. I am afraid I have injured/ hurt/ damaged one of my goldfish. I have 2 goldfish and I was moving them out of their bowl in order to change their water. I picked her up (she's a fantail goldfish) when I picked her up she jumped out of my hand and landed on the table!! She was jumping around on the table for a max 10 seconds while I panicked and rushed to put her back into water. I'm terrified that I damaged her tail or some other bones around her tail area while I was lifting her off the table or hastily putting her back into water. When she was back in the water the top half of her fanned tail seemed to be slightly bent and moving slower than the bottom half (if that makes sense!) When she was back in the bowl both she and the other fish were kinda sitting around the bottom of the bowl. She was back swimming and feeding ok yesterday. I would still like to know if she could be hurt. I couldn't live with myself if she died because of me or if she is now swimming around in pain. Apologies for the long post and thank you for reading. If somebody could help me that would be great. It was two days ago and I'm now terrified I will wake up and she will be dead in the bowl.
  15. Hi everyone. I tried to find the questionnaire, but seem to have misplaced it. Will gladly fill it out if someone links me, thanks! I'm writing because it seems like my little ECR, Dorito, is having problems. I've emailed Cynthia about this, but I know she's busy and wanted to get a thread started here as well Dorito started out as a very active, bright, friendly fish. She was loving her new tankmates and hand feeding. About 3-4 months after I got her (I've had her for 6 months now) she started sleeping vertically, and becoming less social. Now, she shies away from the light, doesn't like contact with other fish, is afraid of me, and seems like her head is too heavy for her body. She's still got a good appetite but is a clumsy swimmer and tends to open her mouth strangely? This happened since I got her, but I figured it was a ranchu thing. Now I'm not sure... She also seems to have small "twitches" at her anal fins/tail fin when she sits still, or when I move her to another tank. These twitches seem like a nerve response, but I don't know what to make of them, and they don't happen all the time. I have her in a QT now just to observe her, but I'm not sure what else to do. Any help or advice? I'm really puzzled by her change in behavior Thanks! EDIT: also, poops are normal and have always been normal. No discoloration or torn fins, and no white spots anywhere that I can tell. Her eyes are bright but she looks "sad"
  16. Please help!

Hi, I am new to this forum, so if I posted this in the wrong area please don't get mad anyway, my blue oranda will sometimes swim vertically in place. After about 10-30 seconds, he will start swimming normally. I'm just a little confused. He does this every now and then, and not when I am feeding him. Maybe it's just his thing? Additional info~~ 0ppm ammonia and nitrite. 30 ppm nitrate.
  17. 0 nitrates, nitrites, ammonia (house plants zero out the nitrates). Getting ready to do my weekly 75% water change. It's been 7 days since the last one. No meds have ever been administered by me except salt which was removed 3 weeks ago. I left the salt in for a week to deal with minor fin rot after shipping from ECR. Just noticed it last night at the corner of her mouth, I've read that fungal infections can cause this. I also know irreversible deformities can be caused also, so I wanna act quick. I dont have many meds available, but I could get Maracyn. I also wondered if I should go ahead and add salt to keep her immune system up to keep from spreading, but wasn't sure if Maracyn could be mixed with salt. Any advice would be welcome.
  18. I went to the same petsmart I got my fish Moucho and Moncho, and I saw a very cute ryukin who the worker loved and was wanting him to go to a good home. Do you think I could keep 3 fish in my 40 gallon breeder? It is more like 45-46 gallons. I am also considering a single tail because those are my favorite but do you think it would outgrow my tank? We are working on maybe getting a pond so if it gets to big I will just move him out to the pond.
  19. So Pickle is not doing too well. Yesterday morning I noticed a small red spot, a bit like a hematoma, on his belly. I immediately assumed it was the result of his SBD and floating excessively on his back, so I applied a thin layer of vaseline and removed him from the main tank, into a small bowl for feeding and observation. I put him back in the tank when I left for work (right now it's about 95F up here and I have no AC...will have some next week but because of this I absolutely can't have a QT set up as it would get much too hot within hours) and when I got home the spot had at least quadrupled in size. I've attached a video so you guys can see it, and see how he swims.... I freaked out, and moved him to the bowl, and he seemed a bit better. He is weaker, but still eating and still trying to right himself. Keep in mind, I have tried EVERYTHING to help this SBD, which Pickle has had ever since I first got him. I tried vegan diet, peas, fasting, lower water level, lower temperature, medication, etc. None of this has made any difference, but I never saw any sores until this one. The sore has remained the same size today - nothing has gotten better, but nothing has gotten worse. At this point...I just don't know what to do. This came on so fast, and I don't want him to be in pain. However, I also don't want to cut his life short if he could get better. I just want to know...if you were me, what would YOU do? I know this is a personal decision, but I need some help making it. I've been on the edge with him a few times, and none of them have been this bad. Maybe it's because I've seen him get better that I'm hesitating. Please help Water Testing: Temp: 80F pH: 8.2 Ammonia: 0ppm Nitrite: 0ppm Nitrate: 10ppm
  20. Have to LEAVE for 5 days... New QT

I'm freaking out. I have to go down to my grandmother's house tonight, and I won't be back home until Wednesday afternoon. I hate leaving for so long when Karpa (Girly Fishie) is so new in her QT! I've only had her for two days! Thankfully her salt is at the right level, .3%, and her filter should be cycled in a few days, as I jump started it(I knew I'd have to go, just not so soon). None of my fish will be able to get fed again until Monday afternoon when my siblings are brought home. I, however, have to stay and work!!! I wouldn't go down, but it's my big bro's graduation party tomorrow and then I have to work, and my parents are also leaving tomorrow for my great grandmother's funeral. So, I'm strapped for options. What can I do to keep her from DYING while I'm away? I'm not even sure she has enough surface disturbance to live safely. Would it be better if I just... Put her in with Kappa? I really don't want to. She's too small and probably pretty sick. I'm really freaking out. What can I do? If it wasn't okay for me to make a new topic, then mods please delete... I just really need help.
  21. My tank is towards the end of its cycle, ammonia is gone, nitrites are still high, nitrates are 20 ppm range. I do every other day water changes. I have some hornwort, anubias, anacharis, and had a real quick algae infestation. I had scrubbed the 3 walls one water change, then got the floor a couple days later leaving the back wall alone. Since then, I've had an algae bloom that has completely clouded the water. Its a green tint, not a milky cloud. Was looking for any advice or considerations that I dont have the expierence to recognize. Ammonia-0 Nitrites-2ppm salt-.02% ph-7.2 55gallon, 1 3.5" Lionhead 1 3.5" ryukin, every other day water changes API Stress Coat dechlorinator. Unsure as to how to post a pic. Much appreciated
  22. What different plants can grow without substrate? I know java fern, anubias, and any flooting plants, but are there other rhizome(sp?) based plants, or simply other plants, that can grow without substrate, glued to a rock? I want to add some variety to my tank, but I don't know what plants are suitable to add. Any help is appreciated!
  23. Help with fin rot!?

Hello, I have recently been having problems with my kh and ph in my 20 gallon aquarium. There is one lionshead gf in the tank. He is still small but I think the stress of the moving ph has causer him to get fin rot. His tail has a white line at the edge and is being eatin away, I have caught I'm rubbing against the plastic plants every so often wich I understand also could be flukes. I have prazi pro and aquarium sal on hand and need to act today because I leave for work tonight for 2 days and it has gotten much worse seemingly over night. All of my other paramiters seem to be fine except for ph wich has gone up to 7.6 in 3 days and kh is below 50 ppm, amonia and nitrite are 0 wich is the same as the tap as wel as kh bring that low, nitrates stay between 5 and 10 in tank and are 0 for tap. Would it be ok to use the salt to treat the fun rot untill I can fix the kh and ph problem? If so how much should I use? Can I put the prazi pro in as well as I have seen you need to leave it in for a day or 2 and the change some water and treat again? If anyone can please help as soon as possible tonight? Please help I am worried about the general!
  24. Hello! So I'm relatively new to fish keeping. Because of REALLY bad circumstances, I have ended up with two single tailed fish in a 10 gallon tank with a 29 gallon tank that I'm planning to move them into eventually. What I want to know is, how can I cycle my 29 fast and safely? Should I leave the fish in the 10 and do a fishless cycle on the 29, and then add them once it's cycled? Or should I just add the fish and cycle the tank with them in it? I have a 400 gph hang on back filter with filter floss and ceramic media. Thanks!
  25. Hello everyone I've been having a problem for a while which is two of my four fancy goldfish are overly aggressive. Right now I have my 55gal tank separated into three sections with nets. I hate how it makes my tank look but I can't leave all four together because I worry for their safety. One of the two causing trouble is Nick, a black moor. He use to torment all of my fish until I separated them. About a month later my pearl scale started to do the same thing to my other two, Jimmy (an oranda) and Callisto (a demikin), and they were battered. After they were separated for about a month I tried to re-introduce them together, but nothing had changed. I was hoping someone had a better solution than just separating them. I don't want to have to get rid of Nick or Toby but I feel bad for all of them because they don't have as much room as I wish they did to swim . Thank you for your time. -Ashlie (P.S. - I have monitored all the levels of the tank and none of them show any problem. Also I have had all of my fish over a year, and they have been separated for about a month, Nick about two. All but Callisto are male)
