  1. Hi, I am in the process of fishless cycling my 220L tank with fish food. I was wondering if it were possible to use cloudy ammonia used for cleaning instead of the fish food. I do not have access to any other type of ammonia. Thanks so much
  2. Hi all! I'm working through the process of preparing my 30-gallon tank for new goldfish after our old goldfish (Fred) passed away a few days ago. So far, I've cleaned and disinfected my tank and equipment, using bleach and lots and lots of rinsing. I threw away the old gravel, plastic plants, and ornaments, just in case they had bad bacteria on them. I cleaned and disinfected my filter, but replaced it with a Fluval 306 canister filter, because I'm using Tahitian black sand and need a good filter for it. I've placed the sand (3 small bags,) plastic plants, river rocks, and a circular air stone in my tank. It looks really pretty, but it's really missing the fish! I just bought a bottle of ammonia cleanser to start my fishless cycle. This bottle has surfactant--is that safe to put into the tank? I also got a bottle of Seachem Stability. It's supposed to establish a tank in 7 days using good bacteria. Has anyone else tried this? Does it really work? And can this work with the ammonia method (to maybe speed things up?) 6 weeks is a really long time to wait to add fish. I appreciate any help you can offer! RIP Fred
  3. Hello again everyone! I started cycling my tank yesterday using the fishless cycle and after running into a problem (WAY too much ammonia!) I did a few water changes and got it down to 4ppm. Today I went out to my lfs to ask for some old filter media to use to speed up my cycle and the lady GAVE ME A WHOLE FILTER. I'm not sure which kind it is because I have never seen one before. It's like a canister but inside the tank and it attaches to a bubbler. I put it in there and about an hour later the ammonia went all the way from 4-5ppm to .50-1 ppm! wow! I was just wondering how I know the cycle is finished and when to return the filter to the lfs? (I know its when the ammonia reads 0, and the nitrites read 0 and the nitrates real >10, but I have no idea how I should test that while I have this filter in the water.) should I take it out after a week and test the water? should I add more ammonia? I read the article on fishless cycling but it doesn't really pertain to my situation! Please help! I have a hob filter with a sponge, filterfloss and those ceramic things in a bag. Thank you!
  4. I am currently fishless cycling my 30 gallon tank and have been following the graph as for what i should expect to see from this link: http://www.kokosgoldfish.com/FishlessCycle.html I'm currently on day 12, but i have yet to see any nitrites. Is it possible that my cycle is just slower or is it somehow stalled? When i was adding the ammonia i was really paranoid about whether it was 4ppm or 8ppm because the colors are so similar on the API Master Test Kit, so i had everyone in my house check to get their opinions. lol. Is it possible that i added too much ammonia? What will this mean if i have? I know 2 days over the 10 day mark is hardly anything, but i'm worried that i may have done something wrong and would hope it'd be easier to fix if i catch it sooner. Any help will be appreciated.
  5. Hello I'm doing a fishless cycle at the moment. It's been going for 38 days now, and all following the normal pattern and I thought we were on the nice home stretch where you start having nitrites go down and start cheering............. up until today's test. Last week my readings were ammonia 0, nitrite 5, nitrate 40. Today it's ammonia 0, nitrite 5, nitrate 10. Eh?!? I'm confused! I've not done anything different - and have done many a fishless cycle before but never had nitrates going down out of nowhere! Where have they gone and when will they come back?! What's happening?
