  1. I was hoping to get some help with these two oranda guys I just got. I'm a fairly experienced goldfish keeper but these two have me worried. They were a friend's and I know he had them for a year.... They are over a year old, very tiny and very sick. I'm calling them Ren and Stimpy for now. They lived for over a year in a 65 gallon tropical tank that was stuffed to the gills with various fish. 3 adult bn plecos, clown loach, barbs that I know of along with others. I don't know how often the tank was cleaned but I know it was massively poorly stocked and overstocked and had many deaths in it. As of now they are both in my 20 gallon quarantine tank. They have went through a 4 dose furan 2 treatment as soon as I got them. Then 2 days after the antibiotic I started a tetra parasite guard treatment, they have had 2 doses and will receive the third follow up dose Friday. Ths first and worse case is Ren. He is much larger then the other at maybe a 2 to 2.5 inch body but still insanely small for a year old goldie. He is clamped, bottom sitting , has a very heavily red veined tail with a melted edge to it, his eyes almost look like they have large blisters on them. (The eye itself isn't protuding like in typical Popeye instead it looks like a large cloudy cone over the eye itself, he is not eating or responding to food. He just sits there swallowing almost like he has a gravel in his throat but I don't see anything in there when looking with a flashlight. A few times over these past two weeks I have saw him fall over on his side but he generally stays upright. Then there is Stimpy who is so tiny it's insane he has a body size of maybe an inch to an inch and a half basically he is the size of my pinky finger tip. He is also bottom sitting and clamped , missing scales, but does swim on very rare occasion and maybe eat a bit of something. He doesn't have the cloud or veins and stays upright though. I have tried to temp these guys with pellets, flake, frozen blood worm, rapashy gel food and deshelled peas. Very minimal food is even touched. I will fill out the d and d form below as well but I can't tell you much more than this since they are in qt and weren't mine. Haven't seen him poop in awhile. Occasionally comes off the bottom and swims around. He can regulate his swimming depth, does not swim sideways, etc. Still bottom sitting after salt dip yesterday. If you have anymore question please let me know and I will answer them as soon as I can. Thanks for the help. Main issue now is bottom sitting and not eating. No visible signs of fungus or parasites. Right eyes had a cloud in it. Doesn't look like a growth, looks like its in the eye.

My surrogate fish son/grandson is about 7-8" long and somewhere between 4 and 5 yrs old. My son traded two small goldfish that he won for him at a fair. He was somewhere between 2-3" when we got him and we don't know how old he was. My son named him Comet, and a couple of years later when I was searching for information I realized how funny that was. My son swears he did not know or hear the term comet when he got him. lol So the poor thing has been through a lot in his short life. He made it through two big black outs that lasted a week each, through winter, my son changing the water when he remembered and reading him when he was home. His grandmother being stupid one time and forgetting to plug the filter back in for two days (I hang my head in shame, horrified at what I did), definitely overfeeding and over-cleaning his tank. So now, I haven't seen any poop in a few days, and am trying to fast him. He loves peas and wasn't eating and wouldn't eat the crisps, forget about flakes. He used to love freeze dried baby shrimp and would chase them around the tank. I found tubiflex worms, freeze dried and he loved them. Fed them to him about 2 or 3 times in a week. I realized after the week he wasn't eating the peas and "found' them behind the bubbler. Most likely the reason for the high ammonia. He swims around and is balanced and I don't see anything on him and his eyes are clear. He is swollen and listless and is in his "rest" position most of the day. I went to a new pet store where they deal mostly with fish. The man was really nce and helpful. I changed out all the API products for Seachem Prime, Seachem alkaline buffer and Seachem equilibrium. He also suggested one tsp to every 10 gallons of epsom salt to help with constipation. I put two tsps in as I have the water level below the cover. I have two videos. Not the best quality and excuse the sides of the tank. I had to sneak the side view so you could see what he does at rest because he was miffed that I sat in front of him and videotaped him looking his worst. http://s921.photobucket.com/user/Ami514/media/comet/IMG_0824.mp4.htmlhttp://s921.photobucket.com/user/Ami514/media/comet/IMG_0825.mp4.html Thanks for listening and any help you can give me!
  7. Hi there, Sorry to introduce myself so abruptly, but I'm scared for my new ranchu Hiro. I received him from Dandy Oranda on August 28 and I thought he was just recovering from shipment, but he is still sluggish. He ate a little gel food on the first day, but hasn't touched anything since. He mostly just sits on the bottom of the hospital tub and when he does swim, it's with a rocky lopsided motion. I've tried to give him peas, but he won't eat them. I noticed he had clear stringy poop on the second day, but nothing since. We moved him to a 16 gal. qt tub filled with 10 gal. of water from a 55 gallon tank that held plants and two small goldfish last night. The water in the tub is treated with Kanaplex because we thought it might be a bacterial issue and he had a torn fin. Here are the stats of the hospital tub: Test Results for the Following: * Ammonia Level(Tank) 0 * Nitrite Level(Tank) 0 * Nitrate level(Tank) o * Ammonia Level(Tap) 0 * Nitrite Level(Tap) * Nitrate level(Tap) * Ph Level, Tank (If possible, KH, GH and chloramines)6.5 * Ph Level, Tap (If possible, KH, GH and chloramines) Other Required Info: * Brand of test-kit used and whether strips or drops? API strips and drops * Water temperature? 72 * Tank size (how many gals.) and how long has it been running? He was in a 55 gal running about a month with established media * What is the name and "size of the filter"(s)? Aqua top canister filter * How often do you change the water and how much? Weekly 75% * How many days ago was the last water change and how much did you change? 3 days * How many fish in the tank and their size? 3 goldfish ( 3"-4" oranda and ryukin and a 4" ranchu) * What kind of water additives or conditioners? Stress coat * What do you feed your fish and how often? Soilent green gel food, fresh veggies, blood worms * Any new fish added to the tank? Ranchu * Any medications added to the tank? Kanaplex and garlic juice to hospital tub * List entire medication/treatment history for fish and tank. Please include salt, Prazi, PP, etc and the approximate time and duration of treatment. 1 dose of Kanaplex, 1 tbsp. of garlic juice * Any unusual findings on the fish such as "grains of salt," bloody streaks, frayed fins or fungus? Torn fin, probably from shipment * Any unusual behavior like staying at the bottom, not eating, etc.? Staying at the bottom and not swimming Also, I shot a quick video to show his movement:
  8. Hagen Mini Master Nutrafin Test kit * Ammonia Level (tank):0 * Nitrite Level (tank) .3 * Nitrate level (Tank) 5 * Ph Level, (Tank) 7.5 I just added salt to the water - 10 spoons for 50 gal tank. I have a Fluval filter set. My Lionhead goldfish has been acting lethargic for the past week. The tank is clean, I changed about 10 gal of water on Saturday May 11th. No additives. Other fish are a 9" pleco, a 2" dwarf catfish, a 3" calico goldfish, 3" siamese algae eater. He is not eating - not even peas, sitting on the bottom of the tank, dorsal fin up, a red spot has developed on the top of his wen. The wen has grown fairly large..although I have nothing to compare it too. His belly seems to be getting a bit swollen and I am in a panic when I read about dropsy! The other goldfish stays close to him but seems fine, swimming about. If I tap on the glass he will swim away behind a rock. There does not seem to be any discolouration or red veins. I don't know what to do because I can't figure out what may be wrong with him!
  9. Test results: I'll buy a water testing kit tomorrow at the pet store to find this out Tank size: From dimensions I'd estimate five gallons; I know that's not big enough, but he's moving to a bigger tank in two weeks when I get home from university. I have one fantail goldfish, Speedy, who I've had for ten months with no problems. When I fed him late Saturday night/early Sunday morning after returning from a day out he ate just fine. But since then, on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday (today) he hasn't been eating properly. First of all on Sunday I noticed he seemed pretty down (swimming less enthusiastically), then I noticed he wasn't interested in food. I figured he might just be full, but by sunday evening he wasn't just ignoring the food, but was trying to eat and exhibiting chewing and spitting behaviour. I normally feed him on pellets and flakes (he MUCH prefers the pellets), but he wasn't interested in/able to eat either. I also noticed that he was yawning, which was worrying. On Sunday I did a 50% water change, refreshing it with mineral water in case it was a water quality issue. On Monday, I noticed he hadn't pooed since he stopped eating. I bought him lettuce and peas to try him on, but he either spat or ignored them, too. I did another partial water change. I also bought some pure rock salt and gave him a salt bath. After the salt bath, his mood seemed to improve greatly, and he was yawning much less. He still wasn't eating, though. I left a couple of flakes of food in his tank Monday night (to see if he'd manage them overnight), and by this morning it did seem that he had eaten them, and I thought he'd got his appetite back. However when I put another flake in it was back to ignoring, spitting and chewing/spitting. A couple of times today it seemed like while chewing he digesting a little bit of the food before spitting the rest out (it certainly looked like he'd had a good go at it), although that might just be wishful thinking on my part I gave him another salt bath today, and again, it bucked his mood up. He has stopped yawning completely now. However, he's still not eating food. For the last five or so hours he's been ignoring it completely. I've been keeping a close eye on his appearance since he stopped eating, and physically he appears to be in perfect condition. There's nothing different about the inside of his mouth, and he has large ground rocks instead of gravel anyway. I'm going to the pet shop tomorrow (I've been a bit limited today and yesterday in what I could do because of these stupid bank holidays), and I'll buy him a different brand of food, and bloodworms if I can get them, just in case it's boredom/fussiness - although I have a sinking feeling that that isn't a good enough reason for him to stop eating for three days. I ordered some flukes and internal worm treatment, which is due to arrive in a week, and some "interpet liquisil general tonic" which is supposed to sort out parasites and fungus in the tank, and that's due to arrive this thursday. Is there anything else I can do/get for him? I just want Speedy to start eating again Any help would be appreciated (Ps. I know that fantails should have a friend and that he is probably lonely; having put it off for too long, we're getting a new fantail tomorrow, but obviously they will be in the quarantine tank for the next couple of weeks or until Speedy is well again, so that doesn't really effect this problem.)
