What better way to celebrate New Years than with a large breed puppy, right? We had been talking about and researching Newfoundlands for a little while, but weren't planning on moving forward quite yet. Then an alert came to my inbox, one thing led to another, and PUPPY! We drove about 4.5 hours (one way) to go visit some Newfoundland/ Great Pyrenees puppie yesterday (my phone had a better route than the 5-6 hours I saw online originally, whew!) Her brothers and sister were so cute, but in the end we decided Evie would fit in the best with our family. One brother was spoken for the night before, and her other brother was the biggest - a most playful pup! Her sister was a sweet, shy girl who I really connected with and who we had kind of pre-picked as a favorite from her picture - but she never quite warmed up to my husband, and we wondered what she'd think of our active kiddos at home. Evie was so friendly and just a little playful. She kept coming over to us as we were trying to coax her sister, like she was saying "Hey, what about me, I'm a good girl" It became more and more clear who we'd be coming home with. They told us Evie is actually one of the smaller puppies from the litter, but her feet sure don't show it. She's about 19# / 13 weeks. So she may not get to quite full size... or she might. We also met one of the adult male Great Pyrenees whose back came up to our WAISTS - and they said he had been the runt of his litter. : But her mom (Great Pyrenees) was a good bit smaller than him (he was not the dad, the dad was a Newf). Evie is a very laid back girl, more interested in being loved on than playing. Today at least! The kids wanted her to play fetch, and of course they ended up doing all the fetching. The cat is unimpressed. He's made a few rounds to investigate, but I don't think Evie has even noticed him. And she hasn't joined in barking with the neighbor's dogs either (yet...) She is not a fan of the crate though, so we'll have to work to make it a nice place for her to want to be. Pics to follow!
