  1. Hello, everyone! Last week, I was at a wedding where baby goldfish were used as a centerpiece. They were planning on killing them all afterwards, so I took 4 of them to try to save them. I am a first time fish owner, so please bear with me. I obviously didn't have time to cycle a tank, so I am trying to start that process. I have tested the water every day for a week now and so far, liquid tests have picked up no changes to the ammonia or nitrite levels (always 0), so I'm not sure if/when cycling will complete. Today was my first time using strips, and those seemed to pick up a bit of ammonia/nitrite/nitrate. The smallest fish of the bunch has been exhibiting strange behavior. The first day, he was perky and excited. He was even stealing food from the others. The next day, he started sinking to the bottom of the tank and listlessly floating around. I thought it was swim bladder so I added freshwater salt to the tank and started introducing fiber to their diet. I fed kale one day, skipped feeding the next, and then only kale the next day. I then reintroduced soaked pellets. He still didn't perk up and continued to act lethargic, so I turned off the air stone to make his last days of swimming a little easier. I also added 50 mL of Tetra SafeStart to start the cycling (this would be 5 days ago). He perked up immediately after the air stone was turned off and even stopped fin clamping. Two days later, I introduced a pot for him to hide in because he seemed a bit nervous around the other fish at times (other times, they all swim in a happy little pack). Then, about 2 days after introducing the pot, he started floating in the pot all day, fin clamped again. He started developing black spots around the same time (I'm guessing ammonia burn from his atrocious conditions at the wedding, with filthy water and no oxygen). And 2 days ago, he started sitting at the bottom of the pot and not even floating. He comes out for feeding times and gets really excited, but then returns to the pot afterwards. Shortly after he started floating in the pot, I added 6 extra drops of Prime, 5 mL of API StressZyme and 10 more mL of Tetra SafeStart (I added the 2 bacteria additives a day apart). I also tried just giving him ambient light in case the bright lights were stressful, but it didn't help. All the other fish are doing just great, swimming in packs, greeting me, etc. What can I do to help him? I'm so worried and I feel helpless. * Ammonia Level(Tank) = 0 (via API liquid test kit) or .5 ppm (via Tetra EasyStrips) * Nitrite Level(Tank) = 0 (via API liquid test kit) maybe .1 ppm (via Tetra EasyStrips) * Nitrate level(Tank) = probably around 10 ppm (via Tetra EasyStrips) Ammonia Level(Tap) = 0 via strips * Nitrite Level(Tap) = 0 via strips * Nitrate level(Tap) = 0 via strips * Ph Level, Tank (If possible, KH, GH and chloramines) Around 7.6 Via test strips, hardness is between 75 to 100 ppm, alkalinity is probably 20 ppm, and chlorine is 0. * Ph Level, Tap (If possible, KH, GH and chloramines) = around 7.2 via test strips. harness is 150 ppm, chlorine is 0, and alkalinity is about 40 ppm. Other Required Info: * Water temperature? 74 degrees Fahrenheit * Tank size (how many gals.) and how long has it been running? 20 gallon and one week (the 20 gallons is absolutely temporary until I can afford to buy a larger tank) * What is the name and "size of the filter"(s)? Filter included with Aqueon 20 gallon tank called Quietflow LED Pro Power Flow * How often do you change the water and how much? New Tank. No regular schedule yet. Unsure how frequently to change it during cycling * How many days ago was the last water change and how much did you change? 6 days ago, 10 gallons * How many fish in the tank and their size? 4 feeder goldfish about one inch * What kind of water additives or conditioners? 66 total drops of Prime (3 per gallon at times of water change plus 6 additional drops later on to build up slime coat). 60 mL of Tetra SafeStart. 5 mL of API StressZyme. 15 teaspoons of freshwater salt. * What do you feed your fish and how often? I rotate pellets, mashed peas, and blanched kale approximately every day (veggies every day, pellets every other day. I soak and mash up the pellets so they fit in their tiny little mouths. I occasionally give them a few tropical fish flakes, too, since it seems easy for them to eat) * Any new fish added to the tank? All 4 are brand new * Any medications added to the tank? None * List entire medication/treatment history for fish and tank. Please include salt, Prazi, PP, etc and the approximate time and duration of treatment. 15 teaspoons of freshwater aquarium salt 6 days ago * Any unusual findings on the fish such as "grains of salt," bloody streaks, frayed fins or fungus? Sick fish is developing black spots (I believe this is from the ammonia in his previous home). Another fish previously with black spots is actually getting fading on his spots. * Any unusual behavior like staying at the bottom, not eating, etc.? He sits inside a pot in his tank all day at the bottom with his fin clamped up. At feeding times, he perks up and swims around. He seems to have a bit of trouble swimming. His front fins look very small. He flicks his tail and wiggles while swimming more than the other fish, too, almost as if he has a bit of trouble getting around. He also seems to perk up before bed or for brief stints randomly (they all enjoy nipping at my test strips and my syringe that I use to suck out water for liquid testing)

Recovering from fin issue last month - splits almost healed, yellowing/scaley look gone, one prominent blood vessel still showing * Any unusual behavior like staying at the bottom, not eating, etc.? Rainbow is bottom sitting & breathing rapidly, both gills & gulping. He swims around quite a bit, but sinks if not swimming - will occasionally take mouthful of air, then blow out a bubble. Throat/gullet area appears swollen & sort of darkish red. I took him out, put him in a shallow glass dish, held him & looked in his mouth with a flashlight, but did not see any obstructions. Not interested in food. Rainbow sitting Closeups of throat & fish

Please include salt, Prazi, PP, etc and the approximate time and duration of treatment. No meds for this fish other than prazi. Two other fish in the tank have had MMs for dropsy, the most recent round began 4/25 and lasted 2 weeks for Franklin. * Any unusual findings on the fish such as "grains of salt," bloody streaks, frayed fins or fungus? a couple small split fins that began with some chasing behavior May 3 and haven't completely healed up, plus a scuff looking area near tail, does not seem to be raised or anything * Any unusual behavior like staying at the bottom, not eating, etc.? seems to have started with some terrible head-standing and floatiness a couple weeks ago, and now bottom sitting most of the time. Still very interested in food. I'm attaching a couple longish videos that include the other fish and a feeding, so you can get a good idea of the general behavior in the tank. If you see anything else worrisome please let me know. Separately, I've kicked around the idea of using an internal de-wormer as a preventative measure like we do with prazi, but have been afraid of losing fish if we actually do have an issue with that. The reason I am slightly suspicious is that the red cap oranda has gained NO weight over a year's time despite being a very voracious eater. Videos
  4. Hi, My favourite guy, Sir Elton, a white oranda I got in July of last year has not been well. I have been very stressed by this. I have completed 4 rounds prazi. I had an outbreak in my other tank. All other fish are completely fine and completed treatment without issue. Elton started bottom sitting about two weeks or so before I started treating for flukes. Test Results for the Following: * Ammonia Level Tank 0 * Nitrite Level 0 * Nitrate level 0 * Ammonia Level 0 * Nitrite Level 0 * Nitrate level 0 * Ph Level, Tank 8.2 * Ph Level, Tap 8,2 * Brand of test-kit used and whether strips or drops? API liquid test kit. * Water temperature? 72 * Tank size (how many gals.) 29 gallons that's been running for about 7 months. * What is the name and "size of the filter"(s)? Aquaclear 70 and Cobalt EXT * How often do you change the water and how much? 80-90% 2X a week. * How many days ago was the last water change and how much did you change? 90% yesterday * How many fish in the tank and their size? 2 fish, about Elton 3.5 inch body but about 8.5 with tail. a smaller oranda 2 inch (moving out so Elton can be treated in tank if necessary) * What kind of water additives or conditioners? Prime * What do you feed your fish and how often? Repshy Solient Green, NLS Algea Max, NLS Goldfish, occasionally peas and seaweed * Any new fish added to the tank? No * Any medications added to the tank? yes see below, fluke treatment * List entire medication/treatment history for fish and tank. Please include salt, Prazi, PP, etc and the approximate time and duration of treatment. Prazi 3 weeks and week 3 one 4 day treatment of Tetra Parasite Guard (ran out of Prazi and was waiting for it to come in...all that was available locally). This last treatment of Prazi I used salt. Approximately 2 1/2 months ago or so Elton got injured on a filter intake and there was a bit of blood where a scale got damaged. It appeared pretty superficial so I did water changes and added melafix and primafix. No issues. In fact, his very long tail fins looked better than I have seen or even when I got him. There was blotchy light red marks that I now realize are more than just veins because his fins have been clear since that treatment. * Any unusual findings on the fish such as "grains of salt," bloody streaks, frayed fins or fungus? had some slime coat on his wen. Elton has been bottom sitting, especially when lights are out. He eats fine and moves about when I get near the tank. He will even bottom sit occasionally when lights are on. I know some goldfish bottom sit during treatment but I am pretty sure there is more to it, especially since I think the flukes should be under control now. Could there be something bacterial? I wanted him moved to a 75 gallon about 2 months ago but unfortunately that has been another stressor. I live in small town BC and one was ordered, then lost..then the store changed owners. Thankfully we are going to the city later this week and I will get one there. Anyway, I am going to move his tank mate out and do a big water change to get the last bit of prazi and salt out. I am pretty sure I have the following meds: Paragaurd Kanaplex Metroplex Triple Sulfa Salt Primafix Melafix Prazi Pro Thanks

Treated for Ich and Fluke in their old tank 3 months ago. * Any unusual findings on the fish such as "grains of salt," bloody streaks, frayed fins or fungus? Raised scales, White indented bumps on tail fins. One fish with White raised spot on face. * Any unusual behavior like staying at the bottom, not eating, etc.? Telescope bottom sitting. All Gulping once added the new salt today. Here are today's pictures : http://s935.photobucket.com/user/slbradley04/library/?sort=3&page=1 I'm thinking I have a second case of ich in my tank. However, this may be something new. My Telescope Eye (Sunshine) is hanging out at the at the bottom of the tank. (Until water change today) When he sees me, he swims straight towards me. Sometimes he will swim about and then lay back down. I'll keep an eye on him. Everyone one in the tank has a great appetite. My Blackmoor had Swim bladder as of yesterday. He/She is swimming great today. I had been feeding peas to the whole tank. Fed gel food yesterday. Big mistake. I took out my Telescope and Blackmoor placed in hospital tank. I removed 40 gallons of water. I feed the other three fish. Brine Shrimp and a few pellets a piece. Then I added the salted water. I feed a small amount of Brine Shrimp to the two in hospital tank. After adding back the fresh water will salt. I then added some of the fish tank water to the hospital tank. Waited, then put the Blackmoor back in to the main tank. Then I feed the Telescope a few pellets before placing him back in to main tank. I began treating for Ich. If this looks like anything else please let me know. I am willing to change treatment plan. I just want my Goldies healthy. Thanks in advance! P.S. I'm not feeling well. I have Clostridium Difficile Colitis (Bacterial Infection). Caught from friends visiting from out of town. I've been taking Antibiotics. I'm very careful with hand washing before and after caring for my fish. I'm weak and light headed. So, this has been hard on me.

The juvenile oranda 2 weeks ago * Any medications added to the tank? .1% salt * Any behavioral changes? Bottom sitting; surface gulping frequently and then she sometimes splashes and suddenly dives; trying to kind of swim into the filter outpouring?; periodic zoning out and drifting * What symptoms are being displayed? some mild tail fraying and opaque spots on tail; missing scales from flashing from small accident and fluke treatment 1.5 months ago *Previous treatments: The salt is for the missing scales and tail problems; a few weeks ago she developed a secondary infection from fluke treatment (she had a heavy infestation, so I did six five-day rounds at .1% salt) and I treated with Kanaplex and Metroplex for 12 and 14 days respectively Meds available: Metroplex, Kanaplex, Furan-2, Triple Sulfa, PraziPro, Antibiotic food (metro), Methylene Blue, Quick Cure, Malachite Green, salt Sorry to have to write about Duchess again, but she has been bottom-sitting for three days now. Initially it was only at night, but I've now seen her doing it during the day. I went away for a day or so and came back to one of my AQ filters at a dead stop--the filter media smelled very bad, so I rinsed out everything with tank water, did about a 60% water change, and resumed filtration. The water no longer smells bad, but ammonia has gone from 0 ppm to a little over .25 ppm (I have been checking every day). Otherwise I don't know what else could have changed in the tank. Should I sterilize the filter media or is it too late anyway? From my previous threads, some of you may know that I was very worried that flukes weren't Duchess's only problem, since she has been gulping at the surface since her Prazi treatment and her tail has not healed. Her scales are also still missing. I have inserted another air stone to make the surface of the water even more agitated and have not fed them today. Vickie seems fine. Any ideas? She has only ever bottom-sat when she was sulking through her Prazi treatments and during the first few doses of antibiotics.
  7. About a month or so ago I did 4 rounds of Prazi on my main goldfish tank. I just did a water change on Friday because I felt like the fish were bottom sitting more than normal. They seemed to perk up a bit after that, but today a couple of them are bottom sitting again. There has been quite a bit of spawning behavior in the tank recently as well. So, what I am wondering is, could they be tired from that or is it possible the flukes never went away fully? I never bleached the pump I used to drain the tank or the tubing. But, I let them air dry in between uses. Should I have disinfected or is air drying enough? When the fish bottom sit they are just sort of hovering in the corner together near the bottom, but when I come close to the tank they immediately perk up and do the "feed me dance." I added a brand new canister filter on April 6th to replace one I had taken off to start another tank, but there was one left running on the tank the whole time -- also there was NO cycle bump from doing this, I made sure to test after. I don't think this made any difference but wanted to mention it. Test Results for the Following: * Ammonia Level(Tank) 0 * Nitrite Level(Tank) 0 * Nitrate level(Tank) 20 * Ammonia Level(Tap) After the filter I put it through, before the water conditioner, it is 0.25. * Nitrite Level(Tap) 0 * Nitrate level(Tap) 0 * Ph Level, Tank (If possible, KH, GH and chloramines) 7.6 * Ph Level, Tap (If possible, KH, GH and chloramines) 7.6 Other Required Info: * Brand of test-kit used and whether strips or drops? API drops * Water temperature? 80F * Tank size (how many gals.) and how long has it been running? 100 gallons - two years * What is the name and "size of the filter"(s)? 2 aquaTop cf400, one has been running 1 year, one since April 6th * How often do you change the water and how much? every 7-10 days, 35% * How many days ago was the last water change and how much did you change? last Friday, 35% * How many fish in the tank and their size? 5 goldfish - two 4", two 3.5", one 2.5" not including tail * What kind of water additives or conditioners? Ultimate Water Conditioner * What do you feed your fish and how often? Green, Brown, Red seaweed; New Era Goldfish Pellets; NLS Algae pellets; frozen blood worms; frozen daphnia; spinich; peas; NLS goldfish pellets; san francisco bay frozen glass worms. I feed some variation of these foods 3x a day in small portions. * Any new fish added to the tank? No * Any medications added to the tank? No * List entire medication/treatment history for fish and tank. Please include salt, Prazi, PP, etc and the approximate time and duration of treatment. Aqua Prazi was added from Feb. 19 - Mar. 15 for a total of 4 rounds. There was a very minimum of salt in there at the time. 0.05%. * Any unusual findings on the fish such as "grains of salt," bloody streaks, frayed fins or fungus? Not on most of the fish, though the fins have some small tears. But these may be from spawning behavior. See the photos below of the one fish with odd looking marks. * Any unusual behavior like staying at the bottom, not eating, etc.? Bottom sitting is the only strange behavior I'm concerned about. Below is Lacey. Her tail concerns me a bit. Not the huge rip at the bottom -- that has been there since the beginning of the flukes when it tore and never healed correctly. I'm more concerned with what looks like possible specks on there. I'm not sure if you can see them, but they are more visible in the two other pics. Do these look like additional scars or something to do with flukes? Meds that I have on hand: Aqua Prazi, Metronidazole powder, quinine sulfate, dimilin.

I treated for Ich once before with these same fish when I got them at the begining of March. I treated with Ich Attack and raised the temp up to 80 for one week. This was after seeing a few spot on the Ruykin. The spots went away after 3 days of treatment and I continuted to treat for 4 days afterwards. * Any unusual findings on the fish such as "grains of salt," bloody streaks, frayed fins or fungus? White spots on tail fin and pectoral fins. I noticed that the tail fin seems to be curing under a bit and his dorsal fin is being kept pulled down close to his body * Any unusual behavior like staying at the bottom, not eating, etc.? Bottom sitting, or sitting on the plants. This just started last night. I was on my way to bed and I noticed the Ruykin sitting on one of the plants. I just thought he was sleeping and I snapped a few pictures of it. Then this morning he didn't swim up to the front of the tank to greet me, and I knew there was something wrong. He is always been the friendliest out of the two, and anytime I walk by the tank he is right there to greet me.

I don't really think that's a sign of illness, but i thought I'd mention it anyways. I notice what seem like tiny whispy things on his gill flaps. I may just be paranoid, but it seems like he is having trouble breathing. * Any unusual behavior like staying at the bottom, not eating, etc.? Bottom sitting, constantly gasping Please help! I'm really worried about kappa.

Not eating, bottom sitting, clamping. Last week I moved Ruby and Lyle from the outside deck tank to their winter home in the basement. I had already cycled the tank before moving them to the stock tank. They seemed fine outside but as soon as I put them inside they started bottom sitting and wouldn't eat. After about week they are swimming more but are still not interested in eating. This evening Ruby actually jumped out of the water which really worried me. I checked the water right away but the only thing a little off was the nitrates as you can see above. I decided to do a water change to reduce the nitrates. As you might know my other fish is also not doing well right now. Her illness started after doing a large water change. I am on well water that has a pH neutralizing tank on it. I was a little suspicious of my well water so I decided to check the pH of it as I was doing the water change tonight. The pH of the well water started at 7.2 but decreased to 6.4 when I stopped filling the tank. I am thinking that the problem with my fish might be that when I do a water change I am lowering the pH. Sorry about this long winded but I am really worried about my fish. What do you think I can do for them?

Bottom sitting, not eating, twitchy. This all started a couple of weeks ago when I did a 100% water change. Afterwards Daffodil got very floaty and wasn't very hungry. I fasted her for a few days and then fed her some peas. She seemed to recover and was eating but still wasn't completely herself. This has happened previously as you can see in this thread from March. http://www.kokosgoldfish.invisionzone.com/forum/index.php?/topic/116578-daffoil-not-eating-and-having-problems-staying-down/ Last Thursday I decide to treat her for flukes as I did back in March. After the second dose she started bottom sitting and progressively being not interested in food. In the last couple days she has become totally disinterested in food. I have tried soaked pellets and her favorite bloodworms but still no interest. I have been leaving the pellets in the tank for quite some time and after awhile she has tried to eat them but then spit them out. I have seen some poo in the tank so she must be eating something when I'm not watching. She is very lethargic and is either bottom sitting or just skimming the bottom of the tank. Below are a few sad pictures of her from this morning. I appreciate any help. Thanks.
  13. Hi guys, Haven't tested my water for a little while, so will do that asap and get the results to you. Had some issues in my tank lately. Nightshade died, possibly due to an internal parasite, but unsure. Super sad, felt helpless and still feeling horrible. Lipstick has bacterial cysts popping up everywhere (and her own D&D thread about them). Now Gumshoe is showing omonious signs and symptoms. Which is REALLY worrying, because this is the fish who showed no sign of stress illness in hideous ammonia and nitrite when a cycle problem went horribly wrong, and everyone else was bottom sitting and dying. Gumshoe is: * Bottomsitting * Flashing (is this what it is called when they quickly scrap against the gravel?) * Clamped fins * Weird twitchy movement of fins * Weird movement - seems restricted through the body * Dark colouring appeared on the top side of her body - this has been there for awhile and I thought nothing of it because I thought colour change seems quite common and normal. But now I'm thinking it might be relevant? Video uploading atm. Tank is currently salted to 0.2% because of Lipstick's cysts. All I can thing of is that the hinge on my tank is rusting, and flakes of rust may have been falling into the tank. Not sure what effect that could have. I'm going to get them out of there and into the QT asap. Could anything else be causing this? What should I do?

He seems to be missing a lot of scales. * Any unusual behavior like staying at the bottom, not eating, etc.? Wasn't eating when I first got him which lasted 4 days. Eating for the last couple of days. Is bottom sitting and even laying on his side. This is a new fish that a friend of wife gave to us. He says that he has had this fish for a couple of years and wanted us to have it since he doesn't know many people that are into goldfish. We have him for a week now in a quarantine tank and for the first four days he did not eat at all. During this time he would swim some but he would spend quite a bit of time bottom sitting. I consulted with the person who gave us the fish and he suggested that I salt the tank which I did two days ago. He finally started to eat yesterday and has had pellets and bloodworms. Today he is bottom sitting more and is actually laying on his side at time. I didn't really notice it at first but when I was taking the video and pictures to post here I seems like he is missing a lot of scales. Below I have posted some pictures of him close up and from above and a video. Thanks in advance for your help.

Right eyes had a cloud in it. Doesn't look like a growth, looks like its in the eye.
  16. Hi everyone!!!! I'm not going to complete the form just yet, because I think Alex might just pat me on the head and tell me not to worry so much (but I have all required info on hand if needed). I know that if the fish has a high fluke burden and you treat with prazi they might feel a bit sickly for a little while, but I just want to clarify the specific symptoms that could be expected if this were the case? My two teles came with a very high fluke burden (arrived in August last year), and I treated the whole tank to six rounds of PraziPro with salt at 0.1% (everyone also had a salt dip). The rest of the fish were completely unphased, but the two teles were occasionally bottom sitting at the start of the each round of Prazi. Recently the same symptoms (split fins, yawning, occasional bottom sitting) have recurred in those same two fish, so I have started treating for flukes again. I'm just bit concerned about the magnitude of Mao's reaction to each Prazi round. Everyone else is fine, but following the first dose of Prazi he was bottom sitting a lot (like all day) and was very listless (being pushed around by the current). He was also kind of slumped to one side (I nearly had a heart attack because thought he was dead), although his dorsal was erect and not clamped. When I tried to rouse him with a net, he barely made it off the bottom and just got pushed around in the current about 2cms from the bottom. A couple of days later he was 100% fine again. Second round of Prazi = same reaction. He seems to be picking up again now. Is this a normal reaction or should I start a proper D&D? I've read about closed populations of fish developing tolerance to flukes, and really upsetting introduced fish who lack the tolerance. Could this be at play here? My original fish had never been treated for flukes prior to the introduction of the two teles. Any info / advice would be appreciated!

Salt has been used too but its been a while and I don't remember why. * Any unusual findings on the fish such as "grains of salt," bloody streaks, frayed fins or fungus? Nope * Any unusual behavior like staying at the bottom, not eating, etc.? The black moor is acting very lethargic, possibly bottom sitting. Her poop is also stringy and kind of bubbly. Hi! Its been a while since I've had to post. I think my black moor (Pbody--guessed that she is a "she"--not sure) is having troubles. She has been bottom sitting (I think--video below to show her behavior so you can confirm that is what it is) and just acting rather lethargic. When she does swim around, she tends to "eat bubbles" or swim to the top and get some "air" and go to the bottom until the bubble comes out and then goes back for more. (This is in one of the videos.) As soon as I decided to post, she is swimming around like crazy though. She will have days when she is fine and then go back to sitting for a day or two and so on. I think it might be food-related. She seems to be able to swim just fine though, so maybe it is constipation? I'm going to try feeding her some peas tonight and see if that helps. Just want to know if there is anything else I can and should be doing to help her out. Atlas (orange fancy) seems to be fine and swims around like normal. He does seem to miss his swimming buddy when she is sitting on the bottom all day though. The only other thing that is new is that we added a bridge and tiki ornament to give them some where to hide after Christmas. They both loved it and I think it gives Pbody a safe place to get out of the current for a bit if she wants, but wondering if that is what is leading to her sitting periods. I really want to do a water change to get my nitrates down but can't until the water is given the ok (hopefully just a couple more days). I don't want to expose them to some weird chemical. Videos are below. Any thoughts/suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Let me know if you need anything else. Thanks! *Holly and Josh* My Setup What she is doing (of course she started moving when I tried to video her...) Another one (stayed farther back this time)

Hi, sorry if I’m being paranoid but I think my new baby ranchu is sick. I’ve had him 5 days, and despite offering small meals of various foods he isn’t eating or showing any interest, and is bottom sitting, and when he’s not bottom sitting he’s gulping at the surface (filter outtake is angled towards it, with a weakish air stone so there is water movement that’s not too strong I believe). I haven’t started a medication regime as of yet because I ordered some prazi but it probably wont arrive until late this week and was just planning on using salt, but wanted to give him a few days of rest. But now that he’s very inactive and has no appetite, I was wondering whether I should go and get some prazi to treat him sooner, or if it is something else causing this behaviour. Thanks for the advice; I’m just worried for him as none of my other goldfish have ever acted like this.
  19. So as the title says, I think something is wrong with Stinky. For a little while he has been sitting in the corner of the driftwood. And I just noticed that he now has a couple of bumps on his face one on his upper lip and on on his, I guess it would be his nostril. He gets excited when it is time to eat and does swim around at times, although he is not the most graceful because he has a Nemo fin. But he just sits like this most of the day "/

Please include salt, Prazi, PP, etc and the approximate time and duration of treatment: As above, treated using Prazi Pro and salt (0.3%) beginning on the 25th of August. Reduced the salt to 0.1% on the 9th Sept after reading here that it shouldn't be at 0.3% with Prazi Pro (correct / incorrect?!) * Any unusual findings on the fish such as "grains of salt," bloody streaks, frayed fins or fungus? As previously mentioned, there were some frayed fins previously, which cleared up quite quickly after salt was added. Two scales missing from Nightshade (might be coincidence / result of rough behaviour) * Any unusual behavior like staying at the bottom, not eating, etc.? Nightshade (Black Moor, 38grams) has been an occasional bottom sitter since I got him on the 2nd August. When treating with Prazi, I noticed he would sit more in the first day or two that Prazi was added. The last couple of days he has been gulping at the surface, particularly during / after meal times. Today I noticed some weird swimming behaviour, he seems slightly floaty like he is struggling to swim downwards, and haven't seen him bottom sit today. Don't know if this is relevant, but he is also quite a bossy fish, and was quite aggressive (particularly around meal times) when I first introduced him. It took quite a few weeks for a peaceful pecking order to be established. The addition of a new fish, even though she is small and timid, seems to have upset this a little and there has been more chasing than usual going on lately (might be breeding behaviour, but I thought not because females also chase males, and males chase males. It seems to mostly be limited to feeding times). This has been quite rough lately. My friend is going to help me upload videos of the gulping and weird swimming this evening. But I thought it was worth checking in with you all in case there's some obvious mistake I'm still making. Any info / advice would be greatly appreciated, I really thought I was through with making beginner mistakes because things have been going so well lately. Just want to provide the best possible care for my lovely fish http://i964.photobucket.com/albums/ae128/lcgillard/Nighshade-bottomsitting_zps0527c490.jpg

    is my fish dying?

my goldfish Squeak is sitting at the bottom of the tank, he wont really swim unless I go near the tank, he did eat some peas this morning and I thought he had a new lease of life, but he's been like this for a couple of days, seems to be deteriorating. 2 days ago we did a 75% wc and he started floating on his side on the top, he has been going between floating on the top or just sinking down and sitting on the bottom, but he always floated upright like in a trance, this was the first time he was on his side. He was also being bullied by my other fish. I thought he had swim bladder disease and also that he was being stressed out by the other fish but now they're separate he barely moves at all. I've had him for about 6 years, I think he's about 8 because he came to me when he was about 2 (friends who didn't want the fish when they realised how much work was involved after getting them). as Im typing he's just sitting in the corner resting nose down, fins clamped, he just had what seemed like a major spasm and really frightened me, he started spasming and swimming erratically straight up and back down. when he's in the corner he looks peaceful but I have no idea if he might be in pain. I thought he was going to die in the spasm and it look horrible, like he was suffering a lot, then he just went back to the bottom. I am so scared if I euthanise him and I shouldn't be because he is curable, then Im just killing him, but I don't want him to suffer if thats not the case, he means so much to me but I am not a fish expert and i cant exactly take him to the vet. everyone else keeps telling me to kill him because he's just a fish. But he's not just a fish to me, i've looked after him for 6 years, he's one of the family pets and I am not even sure I have the strength to euthanise him, Im just so sad, is this the end? can anyone help me? my water levels and info are all below: the other fish is fine, the tank levels seem fine, I've been running the filter over a year and it was cleaned out about 2 weeks ago so its all clean. I have stopped feeding him anything, I fasted him for a day then gave him peas which he ate this morning, although the other day when he was floating on his side he spat them out when i tried to hand feed him them. he has always been a bit of an air gulper and I thought it was just sbd from taking in air but now I think its more serious than that. His spasm almost looked like he had been possessed by something he was all twitchy. I have no idea what he is going through or how to help him. its horrible. I will try and add a link to a video now. help? Please include salt, Prazi, PP, etc and the approximate time and duration of treatment. i have not put medication in the main tank, squeak was in a hospital tank when he was little and i nursed him back from finrot. also had the same problem with squeak about a year ago and treated him for sbd after coming on here for advice, he went back to normal again until now. I occasionally use gold buffer to adjust the ph levels, thats it. we did move house about 6 months ago and the tank now sits in more daylight next to an outside wall, also the heater got broken int he last tank clean so the water temp is lower than i used to keep it but I read that goldfish are better in colder temps so I didn't replace it. * Any unusual findings on the fish such as "grains of salt," bloody streaks, frayed fins or fungus? they have had red streaks appear in their tails and I have taken that as ammonia poisoning and increased the tank changes from once fortnightly to once every week, the red streaks did fade but they never went away completely, I dont think their fins are frayed but they might be and im not recognising it. * Any unusual behavior like staying at the bottom, not eating, etc.? yes, as I describe above, although he seemed keen to eat this morning which i though was a good sign. right now not looking good at all though

My surrogate fish son/grandson is about 7-8" long and somewhere between 4 and 5 yrs old. My son traded two small goldfish that he won for him at a fair. He was somewhere between 2-3" when we got him and we don't know how old he was. My son named him Comet, and a couple of years later when I was searching for information I realized how funny that was. My son swears he did not know or hear the term comet when he got him. lol So the poor thing has been through a lot in his short life. He made it through two big black outs that lasted a week each, through winter, my son changing the water when he remembered and reading him when he was home. His grandmother being stupid one time and forgetting to plug the filter back in for two days (I hang my head in shame, horrified at what I did), definitely overfeeding and over-cleaning his tank. So now, I haven't seen any poop in a few days, and am trying to fast him. He loves peas and wasn't eating and wouldn't eat the crisps, forget about flakes. He used to love freeze dried baby shrimp and would chase them around the tank. I found tubiflex worms, freeze dried and he loved them. Fed them to him about 2 or 3 times in a week. I realized after the week he wasn't eating the peas and "found' them behind the bubbler. Most likely the reason for the high ammonia. He swims around and is balanced and I don't see anything on him and his eyes are clear. He is swollen and listless and is in his "rest" position most of the day. I went to a new pet store where they deal mostly with fish. The man was really nce and helpful. I changed out all the API products for Seachem Prime, Seachem alkaline buffer and Seachem equilibrium. He also suggested one tsp to every 10 gallons of epsom salt to help with constipation. I put two tsps in as I have the water level below the cover. I have two videos. Not the best quality and excuse the sides of the tank. I had to sneak the side view so you could see what he does at rest because he was miffed that I sat in front of him and videotaped him looking his worst. http://s921.photobucket.com/user/Ami514/media/comet/IMG_0824.mp4.htmlhttp://s921.photobucket.com/user/Ami514/media/comet/IMG_0825.mp4.html Thanks for listening and any help you can give me!
  23. Hi all, I wish I could say that I cruise around here more when Nemo and I are NOT having a bad day... but long time no see. Last I was on here was a while ago and Dnalex was so very super helpful. I have a problem! The below results were after my last water change 25%, a few hours ago. I had brought the nitrate levels down to a manageable level. Please read below.. they had been dangerously high in the previous days. I am currently uploading a video of this bloody splotch on his fin and will post it asap. Test Results for the Following: * Ammonia Level(Tank) 0ppm * Nitrite Level(Tank) 0ppm * Nitrate level(Tank) 20ppm * Ammonia Level(Tap) .25ppm * Nitrite Level(Tap) 0ppm * Nitrate level(Tap) 0ppm * Ph Level, Tank (If possible, KH, GH and chloramines) 7.6 pH, KH 35.8 ppm (and rising, as I replaced my crushed coral. my tap is suuuuper soft.) GH 143.2 ppm * Ph Level, Tap (If possible, KH, GH and chloramines) 6.0 pH Other Required Info: * Brand of test-kit used and whether strips or drops? API MASTER KIT (drops) * Water temperature? 76°F * Tank size (how many gals.) and how long has it been running? 20 gal, about 6 months, cycle has been established. * What is the name and "size of the filter"(s)? Amquel+, and I would buffer my tap with small amounts of baking soda. I just replaced my crushed coral today. * What do you feed your fish and how often? Hikari pellets, occasional TatraFin flakes * Any new fish added to the tank? no * Any medications added to the tank? no * List entire medication/treatment history for fish and tank. Please include salt, Prazi, PP, etc and the approximate time and duration of treatment. * Any unusual findings on the fish such as "grains of salt," bloody streaks, frayed fins or fungus? * Any unusual behavior like staying at the bottom, not eating, etc.? See below for answers to the above questions. Today marks the 4th day of bottom sitting. 4 days ago, I noticed a change in behavior... Nemo was lethargic and bottom-sitting, whereas the day before he was just fine. It had been about a week since my last 25% water change, so I did one (25%) out of routine, and left it at that. I didn't test the water because somenody was borrowing it. I always use Amquel+ with my water changes. The next day, more bottom sitting. So I got my test kit back and decided to test the water. 0ppm ammonia, 0ppm nitrites..... then alarming, shockingly, 120+ppm nitrates!!! EEP! I then administered two back-to-back 25% water changes (so 50% total) that evening. The nitrates went down to about 80~70ppm. So the next day I did another 25% water change, and the nitrates went down again to about 50ppm. I had also ran out of Amquel+ so I made a trip down to the LFS and bought me some more - along with a sword plant, thinking that would help in bringing the nitrates down. I did another 25% water change yesterday evening, and added the plant. Now something I might have slipped up on was I probably didn't clean the plant well enough. We were out of bleach, so I just rubbed it down in pure water for a bit and put it in. :/ He's been eating.... I backed off a little bit on it and gave him a pea here and there during this whole time. This morning, I wake up... Nemo's still bottom sitting. HOWEVER! I was APPALLED to see on the underside of his belly, on his first bottom fin (pelvic fin?) he had a bright red bloody splotch that looks like it's slowly creeping down through his veins in the fin. It starts right where the fin attaches to his body. Eeeeek! Now my questions. Is it possible that: 1.) There could have been parasites on my sword plant and he got attacked/infected THAT QUICKLY? 2.) Nemo occasionally will do laps around the bottom of the tank and never really leave the gravel-level. In fact sometimes he is brushing up against it, skirting it. Is this was is known as "scratching?" I should note, however, that he was doing this BEFORE the new plant, and there shouldn't have been anything else new introduced to the tank before this. 2.) Can bottom-sitting for that long cause something similar to 'bed sores'? If he scratched/bumped up against the gravel too often? He gets bursts of energy, where he'll go swimming through the middle part of the tank, then just 'turn off' and sink rapidly toward the bottom, looking as if he's almost 'hitting' or bumping up against the gravel. Is this what's known as 'flashing?' Meep! OKAY! SO. Should I do salt in the tank, or salt dips? What concentration? Should I try to disinfect the plant better or is it too late? Do I need to buy some Prazipro? I've never administered it before. My LFS closes in about 3 hours, sorry this is so late but I'd appreciate some advice asap!!

This is about a new fish that I recieved from Rain Garden Goldfish on Friday. Apon arrival everything seemed fine except for what looks like a missing scale which you can see in the one photo. I started her in the QT and slowly raised the salt level to 0.3% on Saturday. Started to feed her on Saturday and she ate well. Yesterday I noticed some bottom sitting but she was still eating fine. Today she seems to be bottom sitting a lot more and after she ate tonight spit out some of her food. Because I am realatively new to this I wanted to see what you guys thought. Thanks for your help.

Biggest Oranda stays at bottom of tank recently, but has no visual signs of issues, and has a good appetite and very active around feeding time. Hi All, I think my biggest Oranda is acting a bit off for the past 3 days. He hasn't been as active as he usually is, and is just sitting at the bottom of the tank in the corner he usually sleeps in or at the back of the tank. He has a very good appetite and is interested in food as normal, and is active during feeding time. If I come over to the tank to check my fish out, he will usually perk up and swim to me and become more active. All the other fish in the tank are active, and no fish has any visual signs of issues- no spots, redness, streaking, pine coning that I can see, floating issues, etc. Am I just paranoid? Does he maybe want a more lush tank to swim through and explore? Some pics from today, and will post video as well:
