  1. PLEASE HELP I recently scored a 140L tank and was very excited to put some new goldfish in their so that my year old fantail would have a few buddies. My sister and I excitedly went to the local fish shop to ask for some advice and pick out some new buddies. The fish shop man assured me that I could have 9 fish in my tank no worries. Its been one week and after extensive research due to the amount of complications it’s become very obvious through multiple complications from fish picking each others scales off to ammonia levels becoming excessively high VERY quickly. that this is not true and he was lying. Although I love all the new babies I understand this is not healthy for them and I just am very lost on what to do. The store won’t let me return them as I don’t have a receipt. Is a humane euthanasia with clove oil the best option if I can’t find anyone to rehome them? I can’t afford more tanks at the moment. But they are still small petshop sized goldfish besides my year old fantail how long until they become stunted and in pain? please help.
  2. Hey! I'm just kinda curious, is he just a fan tail with a more slender body? Doesn't he kind look like a wakin? His tail is quite short too
  3. So, Mandy said I have to take a crap load of pictures to get good ones. Half of that seemed to be true... So, here is a crap load of obscenely dark/light pictures. Enjoy! (the same one again, only lightened) i wish you guys could just see how truly amazing Monet's fins are... Mandy and DERP <3 lOOK AT derp'S NICE RYUKIN SHAPE! DERP's funny mouth, lol. Caught mid movement. Mandy's a total doll I tried taking some with flash, too. That face, tho... Mirror image.... they look so judgemental, tho Pretty girl Mandy is developing a hump, too Fat little bellies Fins for miles... They look so creepy with flash on Their eyes aren't actually foggy. Flash sucks. Marley is such a chunker Okay, so.... that's all. Maybe next time I can take photos that aren't blurry, foggy, too light or too dark. It's just my first try, after all. At least you vaguely know what they look like now!
  4. Hi there. I am not sure if this is even in the wright section but came to this forum to get some help from fish keepers with some experience. Due to some circumstances I will be leaving the country in 2 months and am trying to find a home for some fancy goldfish I purchased from Raingarden goldfish in Hawaii. These fish are absolutely stunning and amazing. I did not see a place to sell on this forum so am asking what the right way to go about this would be? I also saw some listings on the site for local clubs by state. I am in Michigan. Is it worth reaching out to the pond and koi clubs to re-home my fish? Any advice welcome. The fish were super expensive and ideally would like to sell them but if I can't manage that, safe re-homing is my priority. I care for them a lot. I have: 1 Ryukin. Female. 6+inches 1 Veiltail (pure, no tail split) Male. 4+inches 1 Ribbontail. Male. 4+inches 1 Fantail. Stunning black and White. Male. 3+ inches 1 petsmart rescue. also needs a home. had her for 6 years. pure white. sweet obviously not the same quality as others. 3 golden dojos. need home too. about 4-5 inches. only fish I would keep with goldies. These guys are a blast. so much fun. 1 nerite snail if you'll have him. He is like 3+ years old. Didn't even know they lived that long... They are currently in a 120g tank with sump. I am trying to get the whole system sold too. Looking for advice on how to proceed. Thanks for your patience with this rushed post. I really like this forum and hope I can find a good direction to go in with my problem.
  5. So, I'd been visiting my LFS's on a weekly basis for a little while, looking for someone special I am so picky and it always takes me forever to find a fish that I want to buy. I was looking for a red/white sakura short tailed ryukin or ranchu. BUT, I saw this guy and decided I had to have him I like his color, body shape, and the length of his fins in proportion to his body. It's hard to tell in the picture, but his fins are injured. There were about 30 goldfish in the tank he was in, and for some reason there were 2 super tiny moors that were chasing everyone around and really biting at everyone's bodies/fins. Who knows how his tail was injured, but I'm sure it will heal nicely Anyone have any name ideas?
  6. Just wanted to share some of my favorite photos of my little guys with you all My little guys when I first got them... so tiny! And so cautious about the big lady coming to peek into the tank all the time. First picture of my calico, once I'd had them about a week. And first picture of the orange guy after a week. At this point, I still didn't know if they were male or female. They look so cute grazing for food that isn't there sometimes. And begging to be fed. Always begging to be fed. xD See? "Mommy, I'm hungry!" They still love each other and hang out together in the tank all the time. (Surprise kisses!) Those fantails... I just fell in love. And both my little boys have developed breeding stars on their gill plates, and some along the leading rays of their pectoral fins as well. Reminds me of all the boys in high school getting acne. "I told you I was a boy! Geez!" By now both of my water babies have begun to fill out a little, too, which makes me smile. They are such cute little studs. And they know very well that they are loved. Hope you enjoyed the "pseudo-story" of my fantails, I enjoy every minute with my hands in the water. Even cleaning the tank is kind of fun (because I weigh them and track how much they've grown every other water change). These two little fantails are my pride and joy right now, and even if I get more expensive or well-bred fish down the line, these two were the ones that started it all. ~ CaliGold ~
  7. It took a few days to get the video and photos uploaded, but here they are as promised. This is the fish I bought from Mikey's store in New Jersey and he shipped to me. There was a little snag with the shipping and for some reason it took a day longer than it was supposed to, but he is here safe and sound. I think he may have been a little bit traumatized by the ordeal because he's bottom sitting a little bit. I have put 0.1% salt in and am monitoring it, and if it doesn't get better I'll start a D&D thread... but, in the meantime, here he is and I think he's beautiful!
  8. Hello everyone! I unfortunately started with 3 fantail's in a 10 gallon aquarium and no cycling... (Eek!!!) when my husband and I decided to get our goldfish it was really spur of the moment. We went and bought the 10 gallon aquarium "starter kit". It came with the light, top and a filter. We set it up and then went out to go get our fish. I knew we were going to get goldfish, so I figured after we picked out what kind we wanted and got them home that I would then learn all about that breed. I shortly after learned what a huge mistake we had made. Long story short, I never knew how much I could love some fish! I've spent more money on them then my cats. I now have a 75 gallon with only 2 fantail's. (One didn't survive the cycling ????) they eat better then I do and fish shopping is now my favorite thing to do! Haha my husband is learning to love my new obsession. I'm still learning a lot about them, but I feel like I have a way better understanding then before. I've even helped a couple people out on another forum I found. I'm really excited to be joining koko's. So many other goldfish lover like me! I can't get enough! Here are my fishies. Sushi and cheeto.
  9. Hi all, I have a question about a spot on my fantail goldfish's tail. She also has some very mild fraying in two spots, but she's always moving so it's hard to get as HQ a picture as I would like. She does not always swim with her head down--I know that Erik Johnson says that this can be a sign of an internal bacterial infection. She just likes to dig. I am concerned about what to do since normally I would dose a .3% salt solution; would a salt bath work instead? I also don't know if this is a bacterial or fungal issue. I am reluctant to dose Pimafix since she seemed to be pretty out of it when I have tried it in the past. My parameters aren't as stable as I would like--I would like to see more nitrates--so I am nervous about anything that would disrupt the biofilter. Here are my parameters, etc: * Ammonia Level(Tank) 0 after water change, .25 ppm this morning * Nitrite Level(Tank) 0 ppm * Nitrate level(Tank) 0-5 ppm (orangeish hue to yellow) * Ammonia Level(Tap) 0 * Nitrite Level(Tap) 0 * Nitrate level(Tap) 0 * Ph Level, Tank (If possible, KH, GH and chloramines) 8.0 * Ph Level, Tap (If possible, KH, GH and chloramines) 7.0 Other Required Info: * Brand of test-kit used and whether strips or drops? API Master Kit * Water temperature? 74-76 F * Tank size (how many gals.) and how long has it been running? 29 gallons, 5 years with biofilter disruptions * What is the name and "size of the filter"(s)? Aquaclear 70 (2 of them) * How often do you change the water and how much? lately, daily or every other day due to trace ammonia and paranoia * How many days ago was the last water change and how much did you change? 50% this morning * How many fish in the tank and their size? 1 fish around 3 inches body length * What kind of water additives or conditioners? Prime, Flourish comprehensive * What do you feed your fish and how often? 2x daily; mixture of spirulina, recently New Life Spectrum pellets (previous Aqueon goldfish pellets), peas periodically, treats: brine shrimp about every 2 weeks * Any new fish added to the tank? No * Any medications added to the tank? Melafix for 3 days now * List entire medication/treatment history for fish and tank. Please include salt, Prazi, PP, etc and the approximate time and duration of treatment. Prazi about a month and a half ago (2 rounds as per bottle instructions); haven't salted in a long time due to plant addition; I have done antibiotics (Maracyn 1 and 2) for a columnaris infection one year ago; methalyne blue bath about 1.5 weeks ago * Any unusual findings on the fish such as "grains of salt," bloody streaks, frayed fins or fungus? slight fraying and opaque spot * Any unusual behavior like staying at the bottom, not eating, etc.? seems nervous and agitated since the death of her tank mate; startles easily but otherwise inquisitive and hungry Thank you!
  10. I recently got a new goldfish so I thought I'd share some pictures. Meet Seaking! And here he is with Goldeen. I hadn't realized how fat she'd gotten until I got Seaking. Also, I wanted some advice on his tail? I bought him as a fantail, but, unlike my Goldeen, his tail isn't split? I tried to get some pictures, but he'd rather mooch around for food than pose for me so these were the best I got.
  11. Concentration is required for baby goldie mouths to munch peas, this is the stillest I've ever seen them! I didn't cut this one quite small enough, and it nearly caused a fishy fisty cuffs
  12. So last Saturday I got 2 new goldfish from Pets@Home and they have been in a small 15 or so litre quarantine tank ever since and I can't let you guys not have pics so here they are (I wasn't gonna get them but those 2 picked me ) Red and white oranda: My favourite pic:
  13. I stared at this blank box for five minutes as I figured what to write without sounding really awkward and lame. I gave up and just started writing... Hello, nice to meet you all. I joined a few days ago and have been lurking since. I'm excited to join in because from what I've read so far you're all really lovely! I'm completely new to fish keeping and goldfishes. We had a huge tank when I was younger, but I only have a vague remembrance of it. I think it was a tropical tank. There was at least a dozen small fishes in there (no idea what.) and I named them all after the spice girls...yeah. There was also a sucker fish in there who was a cool dude. I remember his name was *drumroll* Mr Sucker... ... I was a very imaginative child. My dad got ride of the tank. I don 't remember why, but we never had anymore fish and I never had the desire for one either. Fast forward to aged 22. I can’t say for sure where the idea that I’d like to have a pet fish came from. I’d been entertaining it for a few months, but it was only ever a passing thought, not even worth doing research on fish…unfortunately. Then one day, I decided I’m going to get a fish! I did the bare minimum research before zooming off to the pet shop. I bought a tank that came with a filter and the pet shop told me to leave it for 24 hours then I’d be able to get a fish. (I know fish cycle! Bare with me…) So next day I fetched my goldfish, a gorgeous fantail who I named Goldeen. And after a rather traumatic bus ride, (for both of us!), we arrived home. I knew enough to allow the bag to adjust to the same temperature and added water from the tank to the bag while this was happening I decided to do some more research on my new pet wherein I discovered the fist cycle… Bit late now. So, I had no choice but to do the cycle with her in the tank. Luckily, Goldeen is a trouper and I was very careful to check the water quality and do regular water changes. She had no problems through the process. It's been three months now and she's doing fine. Now I'm going to put up lots of pictures so you'll forgive me for my newbie error. I've learnt my lesson and will always research, research, research! Despite the grumpy face in the picture Goldeen is really friendly. These pictures were taken on the day I brought her home 13/6/14. She loves cucumbers, hates peas, likes to tease the cat and bully the dog and makes it her life mission to get stuck behind things whenever possible. I'm hoping to get her a friend in a few months. I'm torn between getting a black moor or another fantail! Look forward to talking to you all!
  14. Hi guys... A bit of bad news … I returned home from work today to find my fantail Rocky had passed away. There wasn’t a blemish on him, and the end seems to have been quite peaceful. It was touching to see the other three guys keeping watch over him, and they seemed to be protecting his body. He has been intermittently bottom sitting and gasping for some weeks … he also seemed to be getting a little “floaty” on occasions, sometimes losing control of his swimming. I am confident that the filter failure I experienced a few weeks ago, and which resulted in some Ammonia increase and water "bloom"contributed to his demise. I have buried him in the garden, in a little flowered section dedicated to my previous deceased fish; I placed him in with “The Pink Lady” and several other beloved fish I have lost over the years. Anyway, at least he is not suffering any longer, that's a big comfort and consolation..... Bye Rocky .... R.I.P. Here's the last footage of him, taken just a few days ago .....

  16. After creating a post relating to my Tropical Tank yesterday, Sue (Motherredcap) enquired with regard to my other goldfish, and how they are doing. Here's a brief video of the "Wild Bunch"..... eating as normal, food plays a very big part in their lives!! Here's an old introduction article for the boys..... http://www.kokosgoldfish.invisionzone.com/forum/index.php?/topic/106352-my-fishy-family/ I hope you enjoyed this Sue????
  17. So I purchased a new fish today. S/he is a tiny fantail purchased from- now don't kill me- Wal*mart. I know, I know, it's awful to purchase fish from there... But the lfs fish looked awful. And I mean awful. They got their stock in last Friday and what's left looked half dead. But I was already in a fish buying mood, and when we went to Wal*mart... S/he was so cute and tiny... And I also purchased air stones, canning salt and epsom salt. I set up a 10g with a small filter(uncycled), an airwand, a light, and .1% salt. I will (hopefully) be purchasing Prazi on Saturday, when I recieve my first paycheck. Is there anything else I should get? I haven't seen clamped fins or bottom sitting. The Wal*mart fishes were actually pretty healthy today, and I didn't see a single dead one, but... I want to do this right. EDIT: S/he also isn't moving around much, just hanging by the bamboo I put in. Is this normal?
  18. So what's the dumbest thing somebody with hundreds of goldfish could do? Buy more! I know it seems crazy to be buying fish but there is method to my madness. I got these two guys at the local Wal-Mart this morning. Next Spring I want to try breeding comet to fantail so I need to get a few more of each so that I have a good shot at having a breeding pair. What I want to end up with is a single-tailed fantail shaped goldfish with comet fins.
  19. Hi-I have come across a fantail in my area that is in need of a home. From the pictures in the ad, it looks like he/she may have something wrong on the right side and above the right eye but I'm not sure. I have not had a fantail before and the pictures are kind of blurry so it's hard for me to tell. I apologize too, I do not know how to upload the photo onto my post. I will try to figure it out but no guarantee, I'm so not good with computer stuff. In the meantime, if you google Craigslist 4276223117 it will bring you to the pictures. I know getting to the picture is more involved but I would really like to help the fish, especially if he/she is having an issue. Thank you very much for any help you can give me : )
  20. Hey guys one of my goldfish is sick I believe and I need help figuring it out what it is... heres the copy/paste forms Test Results for the Following: * Ammonia Level(Tank) 0ppm (all tests were done today) * Nitrite Level(Tank) 0ppm * Nitrate level(Tank) less than 20ppm * Ammonia Level(Tap) not @ home * Nitrite Level(Tap) * Nitrate level(Tap) * Ph Level, Tank (If possible, KH, GH and chloramines) 7.6 * Ph Level, Tap (If possible, KH, GH and chloramines) Other Required Info: * Brand of test-kit used and whether strips or drops? API master kit * Water temperature? 73 degrees I believe * Tank size (how many gals.) and how long has it been running? 50G, been running for 3 months? 4 months? * What is the name and "size of the filter"(s)? aqua clear 110 * How often do you change the water and how much? every friday or saturday and usually 25-50% * How many days ago was the last water change and how much did you change? Today 50% * How many fish in the tank and their size? 4 fan tails, about 4'' long to their tails, a few months old each. * What kind of water additives or conditioners? I use Prime dechlor. when I do water changes as recommended by the label * What do you feed your fish and how often? Hikari lionhead sinking pellets 2 small meals daily cooked veggies twice a week (usually broccoli and/or peas) blood worms once a week if i remember instead of the pellets (always forget they're in the fridge) * Any new fish added to the tank? no * Any medications added to the tank? no * List entire medication/treatment history for fish and tank. Please include salt, Prazi, PP, etc and the approximate time and duration of treatment. nothing thus far * Any unusual findings on the fish such as "grains of salt," bloody streaks, frayed fins or fungus? no, coloring is great, fins look great * Any unusual behavior like staying at the bottom, not eating, etc.? Yes--- this is it Freckles my calico fantail (petsm*rt fish), I've had him since May. He's always been a pretty swimmer, loves to play in the air bubbles, swim to the top, to the bottom etc. But lately (in the past weeks) he's been more blah. Hes been hanging out up at the top in the back (typically he likes to swim in the front top) but instead of swimming around hes just been sitting there. The reason why I'm posting is also the other morning when the lights first turned on (timer) he went to the bottom and literally just sat with his belly on the sand. I tested the water and the ammonia was a litter higher (0.25ppm) so I did a 50% water change and put some additional ammonia remover media in my filter (theres already carb-ammo but I added fluval ammonia remover) I tested the water today (2 days later) and no more ammonia (0ppm) but his behavior still hasn't improved very much, in the past weeks I also tried fasting him for 2 days and also a 3 day pea diet (as with the others in the tank who all seem fine, no change in behaviors) Additional info: filter has been properly cycled and running for months, no change in temp except barely a drop since I'm not using a heater this winter and no substrate change. Not sure what else to do, my goldfish haven't been sick before
  21. Hi all, Looking for some advice, comments on my fantail hercules... Something I've noticed is his fins, especially the back ones are no where near the quality/length of my other fish. Could that be due to his prior home at petsmart or? I feed them a mix of Hikari lionhead, salmon, frozen bloodworms and veggies. He eats healthy amounts no different than the other 3, and is only barely smaller (he was the last addition to the group), just as active and personable but his fins just aren't the same as the others :/ Does anyone have any input or similar issues with their fish? Ps. I'll try to take a photo to show but Herk is the least photogenic of the 4.
  22. Hello from NVA! About me, I am in my second year of college, an art major going into tattooing. I love to draw, art is my passion. I dapple a little in photography and graphic design. I love to be outside, hiking, horseback riding, fishing, exploring. I love animals. I like to learn about cars and do my best to do repairs by myself (not a typical girl activity lol) I like furniture and design. I love to cook, I have a serious sweet tooth (red velvet brownies with white chocolate anyone?? ) I love my pets, Bama my 6 year old black cat who I've had since she was a baby...Cream sickle, Freckles, Florida and Hercules my fat fantail goldies and multiple drooling dogs. I try to learn as much as I can about my animals. Which is why I'm here! After my mom set up a 100gallon saltwater tank I really became inspired and realized how much I love to watch fish and so, About my goldies: I adopted them from petsmart about 6 months ago, not really knowing what I was getting myself in to (very expensive...) Started off with freckles, a cory cat (Sh*teater) and a black moor (RIP shaniqua) in a 10 gallon starter. Realized almost immediately they weren't happy, I didn't know what I was doing with filtration or anything and so I started to google. Stumbled upon Koko's and decided to research and make some changes. Discovered how to cycle my tank, and took out some decorations, but it was too late for poor shaniqua who passed away soon after I got him.. I continued with the changes, replaced the gravel with bare bottom, bought an aquaclear filter and began to look for a larger tank on craigslist. Found a 45 gal (or so they said...) tank decently priced, went and got three more fantails but found out later, no, it was not what they advertised and I had a huge algae bloom taking over my tank. And to top it off my fish were still unhappy! And so this leads me to my current set up, my 4 fantails in a 50gal tank (thank you aquarium volume calculators, this one is actually 50gal!) I have an aquaclear 110 HOB filter, looking into getting an additional canister filter (maybe when I am not as broke!) black moonsand substrate with a few moss balls and Turbo the snail (I rehomed sh*teater, my cory cat to a friend's warmer, tropical tank as he was pretty chilly in my basement tank) My next step is probably going to be adding some live plants to the tank so I've been getting some info for that on here. My boyfriend actually got me a python water changer for my birthday so no more buckets!!! Meanwhile, my goldies are having a growth spurt, they are about 3-4'' long due to their diet of Hikari food, they go crazy for bloodworms (am I the only one who's grossed out by those?? HA) and occasional fresh veggies. They are happy fish and I really enjoy them. They have such a personality and are just so cute. My cat also enjoys them although I'm sure she's just plotting to eat them...ha ha. Anyway so thats me! Sorry for such a long post. I'll try and put some photos up when I get the chance!
  23. Hi everyone, Gonna make a quick post to show you my new live plants, not sure if this is the right section for it but I'd love for any/all advice... Finally found a LFS in my area that carries live FRESHWATER plants...seems to be a rarity where I live. Hmp. But found one and got a couple thin leaf java ferns (I believe thats what they were called...could be mistaken). To start off my first live planted tank! Seemed fitting to go to the fish store today considering the roads are basically ponds now...3''+ of rain these past two days. But anyway, here is my current set up, 50G corner pent tank, the ferns I attached to the driftwood with fishing line. Fish guy gave me some organic carbon to use...pour in a capful once a week. Probably going to move my air stone to the back later on or put my bubble wall back in maybe, but right now my cat needs some attention so I have to take a break. Excuse the swimming pigs in the photos They've left the plants alone so far, crossing my fingers! Sooooooooo what do you think?? http://i1364.photobucket.com/albums/r723/sesaber2/planted4_zpsec0660a1.jpg http://i1364.photobucket.com/albums/r723/sesaber2/PLANTED1_zpse568309c.jpg http://i1364.photobucket.com/albums/r723/sesaber2/planted2_zps5f11e98c.jpg http://i1364.photobucket.com/albums/r723/sesaber2/planted3_zps31a8fbbe.jpg
