  1. New recap oranda get their first live food. Fresh worm. They both want a piece of the fresh diner.
  2. i know this sounds like a stupid question but i’m worries and don’t know what to do!! i bought 4 goldfish yesterday and they all seem to be fine so i don’t think it’s a water issue however my little black fish dolly is being really weird, staying at the bottom of the tank (usually in far corner) floating upside down/on her side, very jerky movements and erratic twitches etc, sometimes doing a random v fast jerky loop the loop thing, am i doing something wrong? is she just adjusting to her new environment? it doesn’t seem very normal :( im very worried any advice appreciated
  3. Hello, everyone! Last week, I was at a wedding where baby goldfish were used as a centerpiece. They were planning on killing them all afterwards, so I took 4 of them to try to save them. I am a first time fish owner, so please bear with me. I obviously didn't have time to cycle a tank, so I am trying to start that process. I have tested the water every day for a week now and so far, liquid tests have picked up no changes to the ammonia or nitrite levels (always 0), so I'm not sure if/when cycling will complete. Today was my first time using strips, and those seemed to pick up a bit of ammonia/nitrite/nitrate. The smallest fish of the bunch has been exhibiting strange behavior. The first day, he was perky and excited. He was even stealing food from the others. The next day, he started sinking to the bottom of the tank and listlessly floating around. I thought it was swim bladder so I added freshwater salt to the tank and started introducing fiber to their diet. I fed kale one day, skipped feeding the next, and then only kale the next day. I then reintroduced soaked pellets. He still didn't perk up and continued to act lethargic, so I turned off the air stone to make his last days of swimming a little easier. I also added 50 mL of Tetra SafeStart to start the cycling (this would be 5 days ago). He perked up immediately after the air stone was turned off and even stopped fin clamping. Two days later, I introduced a pot for him to hide in because he seemed a bit nervous around the other fish at times (other times, they all swim in a happy little pack). Then, about 2 days after introducing the pot, he started floating in the pot all day, fin clamped again. He started developing black spots around the same time (I'm guessing ammonia burn from his atrocious conditions at the wedding, with filthy water and no oxygen). And 2 days ago, he started sitting at the bottom of the pot and not even floating. He comes out for feeding times and gets really excited, but then returns to the pot afterwards. Shortly after he started floating in the pot, I added 6 extra drops of Prime, 5 mL of API StressZyme and 10 more mL of Tetra SafeStart (I added the 2 bacteria additives a day apart). I also tried just giving him ambient light in case the bright lights were stressful, but it didn't help. All the other fish are doing just great, swimming in packs, greeting me, etc. What can I do to help him? I'm so worried and I feel helpless. * Ammonia Level(Tank) = 0 (via API liquid test kit) or .5 ppm (via Tetra EasyStrips) * Nitrite Level(Tank) = 0 (via API liquid test kit) maybe .1 ppm (via Tetra EasyStrips) * Nitrate level(Tank) = probably around 10 ppm (via Tetra EasyStrips) Ammonia Level(Tap) = 0 via strips * Nitrite Level(Tap) = 0 via strips * Nitrate level(Tap) = 0 via strips * Ph Level, Tank (If possible, KH, GH and chloramines) Around 7.6 Via test strips, hardness is between 75 to 100 ppm, alkalinity is probably 20 ppm, and chlorine is 0. * Ph Level, Tap (If possible, KH, GH and chloramines) = around 7.2 via test strips. harness is 150 ppm, chlorine is 0, and alkalinity is about 40 ppm. Filter included with Aqueon 20 gallon tank called Quietflow LED Pro Power Flow * How often do you change the water and how much? New Tank. No regular schedule yet. Unsure how frequently to change it during cycling * How many days ago was the last water change and how much did you change? 6 days ago, 10 gallons * How many fish in the tank and their size? 4 feeder goldfish about one inch * What kind of water additives or conditioners? 66 total drops of Prime (3 per gallon at times of water change plus 6 additional drops later on to build up slime coat). 60 mL of Tetra SafeStart. 5 mL of API StressZyme. 15 teaspoons of freshwater salt. * What do you feed your fish and how often? I rotate pellets, mashed peas, and blanched kale approximately every day (veggies every day, pellets every other day. I soak and mash up the pellets so they fit in their tiny little mouths. I occasionally give them a few tropical fish flakes, too, since it seems easy for them to eat) * Any new fish added to the tank? All 4 are brand new * Any medications added to the tank? None * List entire medication/treatment history for fish and tank. Please include salt, Prazi, PP, etc and the approximate time and duration of treatment. 15 teaspoons of freshwater aquarium salt 6 days ago * Any unusual findings on the fish such as "grains of salt," bloody streaks, frayed fins or fungus? Sick fish is developing black spots (I believe this is from the ammonia in his previous home). Another fish previously with black spots is actually getting fading on his spots. * Any unusual behavior like staying at the bottom, not eating, etc.? He sits inside a pot in his tank all day at the bottom with his fin clamped up. At feeding times, he perks up and swims around. He seems to have a bit of trouble swimming. His front fins look very small. He flicks his tail and wiggles while swimming more than the other fish, too, almost as if he has a bit of trouble getting around. He also seems to perk up before bed or for brief stints randomly (they all enjoy nipping at my test strips and my syringe that I use to suck out water for liquid testing)
  4. Yes yes I know, Im soo slow! So this happened a while ago... I went for a trip to the Coburg Aquarium (with Lilly) and couldn't resist this tiny Ranchu as we were really missing Speckles To cut the story short we took him home After 2 weeks in QT he went in to the main tank with Tiny Tom and Mr Blacky Huge Eyes...this has got to be about 3-4 weeks ago now Everyone is getting along very well. I weighing everyone and they have all grown, even Moonee who was 4g when I bought him BTW, Lilly my 3 year old chose the name...Moonee
  5. So I'm finally getting around to posting some photos of my new fish. I bought her a little over a week ago, but have had a lot going on and didn't get the photos edited and uploaded right away. She was purchased on ebay from a seller who was breeding fish he/she got from King Lyon Supply, which is where I got my purple telescope Perdita. So, in a way, they are related. I'm not sure what I'm going to name this little one yet, but if anyone has any ideas, please do share. Also, back at the end of April/beginning of May when I went to Michigan, I came back with an unexpected little friend. The fish store I used to work for years ago had some really nice Kirin telescopes. One looked just like a mini version of my big tele Goofball. I couldn't resist. He came back with me. His name is Butterball. Butterball:
  6. Weehoooooo!!! I thought we'd have a hard time settling on a name. My husband told me he looks like a "bad guy." I could see he wanted to go Gladiators, but that wouldn't do... Tried to think of our favorite bad guys and villains. But I don't want a mean fish. So, who's a bad guy that everyone loves? http://giphy.com/gifs/back-to-the-future-biff-marty-mcfly-66r2EQo5nPQZO (this should be embedded, but I don't know how to use the world wide web, so humor me and click, please ) BIFF TANNEN! Anyway, QT flew by, and he's awesome! In he goes, before I overthink things! I can't believe he's smaller than some of my bigger guys.. I mean they're all pretty small, but he just seems huge. Anyway! That's mah boy.
  7. So, I'd been visiting my LFS's on a weekly basis for a little while, looking for someone special I am so picky and it always takes me forever to find a fish that I want to buy. I was looking for a red/white sakura short tailed ryukin or ranchu. BUT, I saw this guy and decided I had to have him I like his color, body shape, and the length of his fins in proportion to his body. It's hard to tell in the picture, but his fins are injured. There were about 30 goldfish in the tank he was in, and for some reason there were 2 super tiny moors that were chasing everyone around and really biting at everyone's bodies/fins. Who knows how his tail was injured, but I'm sure it will heal nicely Anyone have any name ideas?
  8. Hi guys! I have some concerns about one of my new fish, Pasi and thought I’d ask for opinions here. Here’s a little background: At the end of February, I adopted 2 goldfish from a shelter: a common named Aura and a comet named Pasi. I quarantined them separately in 15 gallon tanks for a month with daily water changes and at the end of March added them to my main tank with my comet Kaji. Pasi’s shelter tank had alarmingly high nitrite (as high as the API dropper test can go) and he came with mild finrot, but actually did really well in quarantine. He was super active, had good appetite, and never had a reaction to any of the medicine I used (see med history below). However, after adding him to the main tank, he’s been noticeably less active than before. He spends maybe half his time resting behind a piece of wood. He eats well and reacts when I come near the tank or when the other two fish engage him (they all get along super well; I haven’t seen any aggression but lots of fin rubbing and napping side by side), but he never participates in their chasing games (although he watches with great interest) and generally likes to stick to one side of the tank when swimming. The other problem is that his finrot never healed. It never got worse, but I think his fins actually look exactly the same as they did on the day I got him (about 2 months ago now), despite lots of water changes and pristine conditions. I was thinking about putting him back in his quarantine tank and treating for possible bacterial infection, but I thought I’d get some opinions first. 9. Yesterday I went to my lfs in search of a tall, skinny, spindly (but not pointy!) piece of driftwood. Of course I went to the back wall, cuz, goldfish. I found some aaaamazing calico orandas, along with some great ryukin too, and the big long-bodied moor who I wish would find a home already. And then I found my driftwood! Went back to the fish! Hemmed and hawed, said no, said yes, then realized how many times I've let the good ones go. So I said, YEAH! Buy the fish! And then I bought the driftwood and left. Long story short, I bought my daughter a taco (but actually I was buying myself some time, okay and a taco for me too ), figured it out, and went back in and got my fish. :panana I am IN LOVE!!! I flipped out when I got him into the qt tank because he is even more gorgeous than I had realized at the store. Basically a bigger, red-wenned version of Aubrey's Jersey. I am a touch nervous as I haven't had such a compact fish, nor such a long-finned fish, or one with an actual wen. I've been thinking this whole time that he may be bigger than all of my fish, except for Blimp. I figured he'd be a Plumbean+fins, but no, he's only 46g. I've only ever bought really small fish (Betty's the exception) so maybe that's why my perception was all wonky. I dunno! Please wish me good luck on his qt! He isn't the happiest guy to be in there, and sometimes I wonder if I'm imagining a little floatiness. But I'm so happy I took the plunge! He's beefy and has cheeks. Oh, and here's the driftwood!
  10. Or at least a half the country traveler. Jenna bought this fish for me over a month ago and has been taking excellent care of him She shipped him on priority mail one day mail on Wednesday. So he was supposed to get to my house Thursday. he was MIA until my mailman tracked him down last night. I had to drive down town to the main city post office to pick him up because I was scared he wouldn't live another night in a bag He's doing great today! Swimming around and being a good little fishy! He weighs 12.7 grams. Here is a video when we all first woke up this morning I'm thinking about naming him Jersey or Lucky
  11. So some of you know I got a new fish a couple of days ago and I said I would get photos so here she is (well I think it's a she). Chibi weighs 16 grams, her SL is 5.5cm and her TL is 9cm And I couldn't leave little Tioku out
  12. I should never go to my LFS again... I left with a couple plants.. and another fish... Their goldfish selection has improved so much over the last few months! I just couldn't resist. My "logical" thinking and mostly my explanation to Mike was the fact that we just upgraded the tank so now we have/had some extra room for another fish. I can't wait to see him with the others, but for now its quarantine time. So here is the latest addition: Butterfly calico telescope. No name yet!
  13. It took a few days to get the video and photos uploaded, but here they are as promised. This is the fish I bought from Mikey's store in New Jersey and he shipped to me. There was a little snag with the shipping and for some reason it took a day longer than it was supposed to, but he is here safe and sound. I think he may have been a little bit traumatized by the ordeal because he's bottom sitting a little bit. I have put 0.1% salt in and am monitoring it, and if it doesn't get better I'll start a D&D thread... but, in the meantime, here he is and I think he's beautiful!
  14. Sooooooooooooooooo I went to Blue fish for a few snails. My 40B is in need of a cleaning crew. I picked out 2 zebra and 2 tiger nerites then had to look around. Checked out the tropicals as I've been thinking about setting a 20L up at work. Then I looked at their GF display tank as they won't let anyone purchase from that tank so I know it's safe to look. Next I made the mistake of looking in the GF for sale tank. Lil Mr. Derp Face BEGGED me to take him home. He's 3.2 g of cuteness. They had him labeled as a lionhead. I think not.
  15. Hi all, I just got two new fancies for my 90 gal aquaponics system, and they're currently in a 40 gal quarantine. Please excuse me if my questions seem dumb--I've never had fish in quarantine, and I'm more used to a large aquaponics system, so keeping just a regular aquarium is new to me. Anyway, I've had the new fish in there for about 5 days. I got them from the same place I got my last fish a year ago, though I'm not sure that's relevant. I have a basic aqueon filter, heater, aerator, plus a UV sterilizer (for a bacterial bloom that popped up a couple days in). I've been testing the water and Ammonia is at 0ppm, Nitrite is at like .25ppm, Nitrate is 10-20ppm. Overall, the fish seem to be doing really well, really cruising around the tank and keeping busy. So I have a couple questions 1. How long do I really have to keep these guys in quarantine? It would be SO much easier to have them in the aquaponics system, which mostly regulates itself, heh. 2. I've heard a number of people suggest treating new fish with prazi or salt as a matter of course, even with no symptoms. Is this recommended? They seem perfectly fine right now. 3. I read somewhere I shouldn't have carbon in my filter. Why is that? 4. I'm not sure why there's always nitrite present, even though I've done 50% or greater water changes 2 times in the past 5 days. Is this normal? 5. One of my new fish is pretty small--about 1.5 inches long--and my older fish are closer to 4-5 inches long, including one wakin who has taken to chasing my female fantail around the tank. Should I be worried about him in the big tank? Thanks so much for your help! Dani
  16. So today is day 27, the end of round five of prazi and, if all goes smoothly, I'm planning to introduce my shubunkin, Cosette (who I have a thread about here) into the main tank this coming Friday (QT day 33). I'm a little nervous that my existing fish, Kaji, will bully her since he hasn't lived with other fish since I got him as a tiny 1/2" fish from the fair almost 2 years ago and is also much bigger than her (about 7" sl to her 4" and much more rotund). So, here's what I plan to do based on what I've read from other threads and I was wondering if anyone has anything to add: -mix some of the MT water into the the QT with every daily WC. The QT is 20 gal and I did a 16gal (80%) WC today and added 2gal from Kaji's tank. I was thinking of increasing by 2 gallons or 10% every day (i.e. 4,6, 8 until Friday). -right before adding Cosette, feed Kaji so he will be less aggressive -right before adding Cosette, do a large WC in the MT -right before adding Cosette, rearrange the decor in tank so Kaji will be less territorial Since when I got Cosette she was severely underweight, I've been feeding her 6 small meals a day, whereas I usually feed Kaji 3 larger meals a day. Should I start adjusting Cosette to the three meals a day schedule so she'll be ready for it when she goes into the main tank? I'm probably over-worried, but I want to maximize the chance that they'll get along, especially because I'm going away for two weeks the first week of August so only have 2 weeks to make sure they're okay before I leave them in my boyfriend's care.
  17. Hello, I know stocking can be a sort of sensitive topic and want to get an opinion: I have one 8-9" tl comet in a 50" long 55 gallon tank by himself. He seems to have plenty of room and enjoy the swimming space, but I often worry (and I'm not sure if it's just me anthropomorphising) that he's bored and would like a companion. Every time I see a community tank with a couple goldfish swimming together, I think "my poor goldfish is all alone--am I being cruel?" So I'm considering getting a second comet (probably a sarasa around the same size as my current comet, Kaji) as his companion. I've read a lot of different threads about tank sizes for comets ranging from "you can keep 6 comets in a 55" to "no single-tailed pond fish should ever go in an aquarium of any size." I know that the official Koko's recommendation is 15-20 gal per fish whether single-tailed or fancy but I'm still a little unsure about what's right for a fish Kaji's size. Of course if I did get another fish, I would quarantine for a month, upgrade filtration (I've been eyeing a 525gph canister to use in addition to the two HOBs I currently have), and of course upgrade the tank if/when the two fish outgrew the tank. I'm actually planning to move in 6 months and was thinking that if the 55 is not enough room, I could set up a new tank in my new place and sell the one I have here. So, my question is, would it be a good idea to get another fish in the 55 or is this a recipe for disaster? Is it better for Kaji to have a friend or does he need the space to himself in order to really thrive? I appreciate any advice you Koko's verterans can give! Thanks! Anne
  18. Hi all, At long last, I have introduced my established fish of at least 6 years to her new friend, Victoria, who is a little juvenile oranda (2 inch body length). However, after matching all of the water parameters, etc. , Duchess seems to be 100% freaking out about this blind friend-date. Vickie keeps coming up to her in what seems to be a non-threatening manner--no biting, no charging. She just kind of seems to be trying to swim with her, but Duchess is having none of it and hiding and swimming like a bat out of hell. She is so discombobulated that she's having trouble remembering how to swim it seems like! They were circling each other a little but now D has had a total meltdown and is hiding and bottom sitting. I didn't think they'd be like betta fish for God's sake! Is this normal? I shut off their lights ad they've gotten a 60% happy water change today with the tank at .1% (for both of them until I taper it down). Duchess has been fine lately other than healing up some scrapes (they are all healed). Vickie otherwise has always seemed friendly, passed QT with flying colors, etc. I'm not sure what to do. I guess I could put Vickie back in the QT/holding tank, but I bought her to be a companion for Duchess after her tankmate of her whole life died in early March. When I had introduced D to her former tankmate, she had admittedly just come from a Petco where she had been living with friends. Is she just a weirdo solitary fish now whose heart will always pine for Queenie? Is "new friend anxiety" normal for goldfish? I feel bad for upsetting her and Victoria just seems to want to hang out.
  19. New purchase, large ORANDA , it is 10 years since I buy any red and calico oranda and now will try to breed these beautiful creatures. waiting nearly 18 months for friend Genaro to call with the word that he has finally found something good and we rush out to KEM and get them.I choose 8 nice fish 5 girls and 3 boys ( I hope). they range from 15 cm up to the grand black boy of 20 cm. are in excellent condition and enter standard QT this week. soon arrive first alarm when last night (day 4) notice them to be at top of tank. the red lip oranda tells me to check water (pictured)and I nearly fall down as the NO2 reads 3mg+ . 100% dual water changes and new pump . today repeat water changes .this will continue until filter catches up with these pigs. in last picture of full tank view the year old telescopes butterflys can be seen in lower tank and look like a bunch of babys in size. red lips says check the water stupid stupid checks water and it is NO2 full water change, note in lower tank the year old telescope buttery fly which look sooo small. big black about 20 cm calicos these i hope to breed soon and now prepare the breed tanks.
  20. Hi, This is one of my new fish bought today from our LFS. I didn't notice until we came home, but I think he may have ick? Can anyone confirm this for me please? I have him in a QT tank with the other fish I picked up today, a pearlscale. They were both in the same bag from the shop, so I did not bother to QT them separately as I figured that they would both have the same pathogens now. How do I proceed with the QT procedure for them both? Do I salt and treat for ick? or just treat for ick, and when it is gone salt and prazi? Do you have a link for ick treatment? this is a photo Test Results for the Following: * Ammonia Level(Tank) 0ppm * Nitrite Level(Tank) 0ppm * Nitrate level(Tank) 0ppm * Ammonia Level(Tap) 0ppm * Nitrite Level(Tap) 0ppm * Nitrate level(Tap) 0ppm * Ph Level, Tank (If possible, KH, GH and chloramines) 8.4 kh55 gh250 approx. * Ph Level, Tap (If possible, KH, GH and chloramines) 8.4 kh55 gh250 approx. 21. My family and I made our annual journey to Chicago this weekend for some Windy City fun! The part I was most looking forward to was meeting up with Jared again. We had a great time (or at least I did ). We met for lunch then headed to Old Town Aquarium, the store where Jared just got his large R&W oranda. The store is in the area of Chicago called Old Town hence the name It is an awesome store! They had 2 large black moors in a tank with several small fantails. As Jared discussed the pros and cons of the large showy moors, I was all "Look at the tiny fantails". We stayed a while and I left without a fish . . . well, unless you count this pleco. I met my family at Dave and Busters and told them about the fish. I debated whether or not to go back. "You're already overstocked, Lisa" "You will need to set up another tank if you do it, Lisa" . . . . My family encouraged me to go back (even my husband was throwing out all kinds of possibilities as to where the new tank could go. I think he just wanted me to FINALLY use the stand for my 40B that we got last year in Chicago that's still in the box. Anyway, of course, I decided to get it. (With some encouragement from Aubrey ) I walked back to the fish store and watched for quite a while. There was one I went back for in particular but then as I watched them, there were 2 other calicos that caught my eye. I narrowed it down to one and went for it!! So without further ado, here is my new calico fantail (still no name ). S/he weighs in at a whopping 4.7 g. I've already bored all the subbies with this but I thought I'd bore the rest of the forum.
  22. Oftentimes, we suggest using the bucket to bucket method when QTing a fish, whether it's a new fish or a current fish that is sick. Occasionally when we recommend this method, people ask what we are talking about . Since I just got a new fish, I thought I would do a quick post on what's involved. You will need 2 tanks (or buckets), 2 airstones, water conditioner and any meds needed. You may need a heater (or two) if your treatment includes raising the tank temp. You will also need a very patient spouse, roommate, children as it kind of puts a damper on things in the kitchen if you set up like I do. Tank #1 (on the left). This is the tank that I just moved the fish out of. I removed the fish and water and rinsed the tank out. Depending on why you're QTing, you may want to sterilize the tank at this point with bleach or potassium permanganate. I then fill the tank and add the airstone. Tank #2 (on the right). I just moved the fish into the tank. I added Prime and am dissolving salt in a knee high pantyhose. Because the tank has been sitting out for 24 hours, the temp and pH are matched perfectly. If I was treating with anything besides salt, I would add those meds also. Here is the set up from farther away And here is my newbie in QT. Here is the salt, dissolving. Please note: I use this method if I am using a 10 gallon or smaller. If I'm using a bigger QT for larger fish, I typically will do large daily WCs and/or add a filter depending on the reason for QTing. Also, notice I have the tanks on a towel. Tomorrow when it's time to move new fishie, I will transfer him/her over to tank #1 and empty out tank #2. I will then slide tank #1 with fish over to where tank #2 currently is so that the empty tank can be rinsed and easily filled with the faucet hose.
  23. I managed to get to That Pet Place after the snow storm yesterday. I knew I'd find some finny friends there, and I was right. The plan was to get three fish so my best friend, my boyfriend, and I each picked our favorite fish to bring home to my tank. I'd like to introduce them to you. First is my boyfriend's pick. His name is Rodriguez. My best friend picked out this fish and named her Magalie, or Magi for short. This little fish kept watching me while I was looking at the tank, and I couldn't resist. Her name is Ilmarë Rodriguez is by far the biggest of the three and Ilmarë is the smallest. They're still adjusting to their tank, so I'll practice my photography skills on them a bit more once they are more settled in.
  24. I recently got a new goldfish so I thought I'd share some pictures. Meet Seaking! And here he is with Goldeen. I hadn't realized how fat she'd gotten until I got Seaking. Also, I wanted some advice on his tail? I bought him as a fantail, but, unlike my Goldeen, his tail isn't split? I tried to get some pictures, but he'd rather mooch around for food than pose for me so these were the best I got.
  25. So I'm brand new to Kokos and to goldfish keeping (just saying). Someone suggested I make a thread on here about my goldfish, both of them are sick. This one, Pablo, has a slight peach fuzz on him that's worrying me, as well as a thicker white fuzzy patch on his tail . Also behind his right gill plate there is an orange thread dangling from him with a few scales at the end of it. This is the other goldfish, Scarlet. She has bad swim bladder problems that I'm treating by fasting her for the next few days >.< as well as this red patch behind her fin Help please? What medications do I need to treat them?
