  1. How long did you do the metro/triple sulfa combo?

Kanaplex is extremely hard on the kidneys.  The build up of fluid in popeye and/or dropsy is due to the kidneys not working properly/effectively.  If an organ is already struggling, I avoid any meds that are hard on them.

If the metro/triple sulfa isn't strong enough, I would go with metro and oxytetracycline . . . .

2 weeks of metro(powder), triple sufla & epsom..

    (12 days to be exact)

    Where to find oxytetracycline ??

  2. If there's not feedback from the mod team please let me know..

I posted a video of metro-triplesufla "after treatment" 3 days ago and no one has mention any alternatives

    I think she's getting worse

She's isolating herself and showing some signs of dropsy..

    20160318_114444_zpskftomdvi.jpg

May I ask.. why didn't we do a kana treatment to begin with when it is known that popeye is one of the first signs of dropsy ????

(as per, kokos goldfish disease page)

  3. Does it with the metro and change 100% of the water every two or three days, using prime to maintain low enough ammonia in between. I usually try to span the shortest water change schedule of the medications I'm using and adapt the longer ones, redosing as needed. It's not one I'm overly worried about buildup in the water column causing issues - you're not going to cause problems by dosing that one longer than directed and changing the water more frequently.

Sorry, I always change my hospital tanks 100% and disregard any incremental water changes on the directions, unless it is for tetras or delicate species like loaches.

Well.. this is what she looks like after a couple of weeks of (metro / triple sufla / epsom) treatment..

I personally don't see a difference (than before treatment) and the other eye looks similar (besides the coloration) too

    What you guys think ???

  4. So is he floaty or just a pig? I wouldn't worry if it is the latter. I have plenty of surface gulpers - if he has been treated for flukes lately and his gills are a nice 'rare steak' red that fine.

On the other hand, If he is upside down, gulping, AND has a mushy belly I'd be recommending an antibiotic. If you think he needs treatment go ahead and start a new thread with a video of him and we will discuss it on the back end and see how the others feel about treatment, okay?

Thank you and sorry for the delay (working out of town)

Yes, it has been treated for flukes..  a year ago while QT and one round as preventative last this week

    Perhaps this videos explain better..

  5. I have had this (male) small ryukin/fantail mix for over a year.

He eats until he cannot move. (piggy lil' thing)

But he spends most of his life "full / belly up" or at the surface gulping for air.

No symptoms of illness besides the soft belly.. definitely softer that the rest

Even if I fast him, he still spends most of the day gulping for air

  6.

oh my.. you have just open my eyes to a lot of negligence..

That is a HUGE jump in nitrate each week! How often are you servicing your canister? Your sump?

I was looking at my notes and I service the canister every 3months but the sump I havent touch in a year.. yuck!  :thumbdown

Are you sure your sump isn't an nitrate factory from mulm? Biofilm and algae are awesome. Detritus and decay built up is not.

The other thing I want to know is your KH and GH - especially if you have calcium precipitating our I suspect high GH and not enough KH.

GH is 300 and KH is way up there as well..

I misplaced the tester but I remember I had to add over 15 drops for the water (KH) to change colors

    Local water is super hard

How much does your PH change overnight from the tap?

PH change from 7.4 to 8.4 after degas (overnight/airstoned)

    and stays 8.4 thereafter

What meds do you have on hand right now to handle the pop eye?

kanaplex, metroplex, bifuran, triplesufla, reg. salt, epsom, prazipro, aquaprazi (powder), kana flakes (food), colloidal silver 500

What is this at the bottom left of the sump??

    20160225_222553_zpsrnsf6agc.jpg

    Calcium??

    20160225_222358_zpsbics6wcj.jpg

    Normal algae, I think..?

  7. Beautiful little fish!

Yes that is pop eye. No, I wouldn't do kanamycin for it. Truthfully, for any fish showing fluid balance issues kanamycin isn't a good choice.

Can you go ahead and fill out the form? Pop eye doesn't come out of the blue, especially for good stock. We may be able to ID an environment cause. Fluctuating water parameters and other stressors can let those anaerobic bacteria take hold and treating the pop eye doesn't addddess the underlying issues.

    Sorry for the delay..

  8. I'm so sorry for your loss.

According to Drs. Johnson and Hess, "A fish suffering from attach by Hexamita will be lethargic, followed by significant erosion of the fins and skin. The body may become entirely milky and the protective slime coat may come off in strands. The fin begin to look as though the tissue between the rays is being eaten away." From page 36 of Fancy Goldfish:A Complete Guide to Care and Collecting.

    Thank you Lisa,

  9. Looks like ich tomites and a bacterial infection to me. The hole in the wen doesn't have some features I'd look for in hexamita, but without more details about the fish and environment it's impossible to say.

Thank you... What are the characteristics/features you look for in hexamita ?

  10. For those who know..

Just wondering if this is what hexamita looks like ??

Pictures don't show what the fish looks like in person

It had clear/white cysts all over - extra slime - the whole on the wen is really red

    Thank you,

  11. I don't see anything white and hanging off.. I see white dots, but that's normal, it's wen growth. I don't see what you mean by fast breathing, it looks normal to me :idont

I don't think you're dosing prazi correctly. From what I am reading from what you posted if I'm reading it correctly you're only really doing 3-4 days rounds and only did about 2 of them. I'm wondering if the fish wasnt (isn't?) eating because the gills are still irritated from flukes perhaps.

I'm not trying to convince anyone of what I see.. I have had this fish for the last 50 days, see it every day and I know when it behaves differently

I am perhaps all wrong but the fish doesn't act neither it looks the same as when I got it

I tried several times to take pictures but the phone doesn't pick "that stuff" up.. And it is not there right now anyway

In regards the prazi.. you're right..

I have one full round on Sep 30 to Oct 7, then a couple of interrupted rounds (one because of dropsy and the other one I can't remember) but I continued them on Nov 2

as 7 day rounds (4 with prazi, 3 without)

  12. Yes the mod team has discussed this.  We don't see anything wrong with the fish.

sorry for the late opinion... timezones work against me. i agree, i don't see anything wrong with the fish either.

I agree...I wasn't able to see any problems in the pics or video :idont

    Surprising, but ok...

I didn't know that a fish that acts lethargic all day, doesn't eat, gets white stuff hanging from its wen & body and gets fatter overnight was a sign of a healthy fish..

    I learned something new today..

I guess this guy goes to the main tank once the prazi round is over..

    Thank you all..!!

  14. I have had this ranchu in QT for the last 7 weeks..

The first days he was super active, strong & even a little of a bully to the roommate, a smaller ranchu

At the second week of QT, he started to pinecone so I started treating as usual (metro, kana & epsom combo)

Pinecone went away but the ranchu wasn't interested in food.. not eating at all from Oct 10 to Oct 25

I tried syringe feed several times hoping something went in

He started to eat kinda normal on Nov 3 after starting a prazi powder round but stopped again on Nov 6

and he hasn't eat anything since then

The symptoms are: No eating, Swollen body, Heavy breathing, Extra slime

Here below is the treatment I followed since day one so you can see what have I done
