  2. I have questions and am seeking advice before it's too late again.......... My daughter Ella (16 yrs ) LOVES goldfish! That is truly an understatement From my perspective she takes good care of them. Feeds them, (from my research seems to be a good diet), changes water weekly (30-50%), checks parameters etc… We keep seeing her goldfish die. Mainly from what seems to be swim bladder or dropsy. It absolutely tears her in apart everytime. We try starving them for a few days when they seem constipated or sick and then feed de shelled peas to try and correct it. I’ve tried adding epsom salt at times, which I was told would help constipation. We’ve even tried a few meds with no help. I thought maybe she was overfeeding. I’ve tried to check and it seems to be an appropriate amount. She even dilutes the pellets to try and help. She feeds a mix of the following…. Hikari Pellets, Dried seaweed, Spirulina Flakes, De shelled peas, occasional flakes, and recently started using Repashy Soilent Green. I have read article after article on the web, in books etc... Her pearl scale is starting to become lethargic and may be starting with some type of issue. Her tank is planted and it seems to be sitting between among a bunch of plants almost at the bottom of the tank. I almost think the plants are helping to hold it in place. I have two community planted tanks myself and do well. I rarely have fish die and I feel like I do know a bit about fish keeping. I just can’t solve this puzzle! Bottom Line….. As you goldfish keepers out there..... I was wondering if you could tell me what you would do in this situation, and do you spot anything that I or she may be doing wrong that we could fix in the future? I don’t know what I’ll do if she loses this one. I will write everything I know about the tank and parameters below. Maybe there is something you guys can see that I am not. Ella’s Tank 29 Gallon bow front Fauna: 1 small Tosakin goldfish, and 1 4-5 inch pearl scale and some type of cold water loach. Equipment: Aquaclear HOB (Only has Seachem Matrix and Sponge), and heater (The heater is just set if her room gets too cold. Her room is in the basement and can get cold in the winter) It is set to keep the water at about 74 degrees. She also has a air bubbler and a Finnex planted tank light. Substrate and decor: Black Sand and Mopani Wood Planted Tank (Pretty Heavily Planted) - She doesn’t add much to help the plants. The fish waste does a pretty good job. She will add Seachem Flourish 1x a week at water change.) She of course uses seachem prime as a water conditioner. Parameters: - Moderately Hard Water. I think GH is around 11-13 and KH is around 8??? - Ammonia - 0 - Nitrite - 0 - Nitrates - Hover around 15 - PH is about 7.2-7.6, API test. It’s hard to tell exactly Water Changes: about 30-50% 1x a week We have friends that take horrible care of their goldfish and they survive! What are we doing wrong? I feel like such a helpless mother! Sorry for the novel. I just thought it best to write every possible thing I could think off to make sure I wasn’t missing anything. Thanks in advance from a caring mother!!! Joy

  8. On a whim I checked on Amazon and they have it! Is there anything I should be looking for? Most of the sellers just says it is 98% KNMO4 PP.
  9. Where do you all get PP? I would like to have some on hand in case I need it. I have called all over the place and can't seem to find it.

Are power heads in a Goldfish tank bad?

Thanks for the advice... My tank is quite heavily planted and it would cause a lot of havoc to remove the UGF. I clean regularly and it hasn't seemed to be a big problem. Here is a pic!
  13. Forgive my ignorance... I am new, but are power heads in a goldfish tank bad? I have two connected to an under gravel filter along with a canister filter. The power heads have a tube attachment that allows me to let air into the powerhead that then blows air bubbles all over the tank. My goldfish seem to like to play in the current and it looks nice. I have a 72 gallon bow front planted tank. The reason I ask is that I read on another site that they may ingest the air bubbles and it may contribute to swim bladder. Is this true? I could turn off the air if this is a problem.
  14. Oh my goodness.... so many questions. So helpful thanks. I will do my best to answer starting from the top. - What do I feed my fish? Repashy Soilent Green (sometimes), Saki Hikari Fancy Goldfish food. - What are the fish acting like? My daughter says they have been more lethargic and not as active as normal. - Anything on their bodies that looks weird? No - Are there still 5 fish in the tank or are you down to 3 now? Down to three now. - Can you also tell us the dosage? As far as dosage I am not sure my daughter fed them the Medigold that came in pellet form. - Length of time for the Medi Gold that you administered? 18 days - What did you treat with salt? The whole Tank What did you treat with peas - The whole tank What did you treat with MediGold? The whole tank. - What kind of salt? Epsom Salt - Which fish got which meds? All the fish got all the meds - What is the medication history for the tank? The only meds that have been used is the MediGold Have you ever medicated with anything other than the Medi-Gold? No I hope this all helps! I did a 90% water change, added a Aquaclear 110 filter, took the carbon out and added purigen. They seemed to have perked up a lot. I hope bigger water changes is all they need to prevent further problems. Any other suggestions?
