I didn't fill out most of the spots because I believe it's too late for my fish and he's very miserable. I've been treating him for dropsy for over a month and he's getting worse and I think it's time to euthanize him...
He's been bloated for about a month and he's in a 25 gallon hospital tank in the garage with a heater and an air stone. I've used epsom salts, aquarium salts, metronidazole by Seachem straight into the water because he will not eat food, peas, and homemade medicated gel food. Not all at once of course. He refuses to eat but is getting larger so I assume he has either fluid from a kidney failure or a tumor. He's so big now and just sinks to the bottom and can't even swim much anymore. When I just did his salt dip about an hour ago, I noticed when I took him out that he had a very long string of clear goo from his vent and his vent was stretched open from the bloating and he's starting to pinecone. Not sure what the clear goo is. It didn't look like poop at all.
My emergency question is that I don't know how to euthanize him the most humane way. I was reading other peoples stories on here about clove oil and alka seltzer, etc. and I don't know where I can get clove oil this late. The only things open around here are a Harris Teeter (grocery store) and a Wal Mart. Would clove oil be available at Wal Mart? I feel bad leaving him to suffer all night and I've heard contradicting things about freezing them, whether it's humane and they suffer or not. I feel kind of weird about putting him in the freezer anyways. So even if I do use clove oil tomorrow, is it necessary to freeze him afterwards? Or just wait 10 minutes until the last gill movement? What is the best way to dilute the clove oil? I've heard vodka burns their gills. I just want him to go the least painful and stressful way possible.. My husband is euthanizing because I can't even bare to do it myself. Also, I have baking soda, and I've heard that works. Does anybody have experience with baking soda? Thanks..
