  1. Hi EdgartheFish - thanks for your kind message. i was under the impression that goldfish can change colours throughout their lives - elvis when i bought him was a lovely gold and black fish - a few weeks later he was mainly gold with white on his tail and half a black mouth I hope its not ammonia burn cos ive never had any ammonia readings since around April 2009 but in saying that and now knowing that something is wrong with my tank with a reading of 0 for nitrates i guess anything can happen. obviously i hope her colour changing isnt to do with any stress as she hasnt changed in her personality at all but i guess only time will tell. thanks
  2. Hi Trinket she is indeed a lovely character i guess im feeling slightly guilty that i didnt catch it earlier or find out about forums like this as just took it to mean that it was a natural thing. nothing has changed in the way of her so im not overly concerned but obviously would like to get her back to top condition if i can. no plecos she was with Elvis (oranda) and Elton (Moor) the marking which from about 2 days ago when i noticed red veins - it looks like its just darkened - im hoping thats a good sign the gravel in teh original tank i reckon is something like 1-2ins if that. yuki is in a barebottom tank as it was sitting empty - i took out the gravel from that tank. ok thanks for the suggestion on the filter ill look for another one to add in the next couple of weeks but i guess it shoudl be ok for now as theres just the two in teh 29 gallon tank for now. Do you think i should add salt to her tank - at present she is just in water with conditioner with some of the old tank water from teh 29 gallon so will probaly have a minute amoutn of salt in there.
  3. Thanks for your input Trinket. I actually think it must be a bacterial thing as yuki has had it since i brought her home in April 2009 and i havent probably helped when i was doing water changes once every 2- 3 weeks. ive put a few photos up so hopefully you can see what im talking about and where it started - its a slow mover whatever it is. The day she arrived home http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd97/FiksMay/Fish/fish2-2.jpg http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd97/FiksMay/Fish/fish1-1.jpg October 2009 http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd97/FiksMay/Fish/S1050909.jpg December 2009 http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd97/FiksMay/Fish/fish1december2009.jpg http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd97/FiksMay/Fish/fish1december.jpg March 2010 http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd97/FiksMay/Fish/fish-2.jpg http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd97/FiksMay/Fish/fish12-2.jpg http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd97/FiksMay/Fish/fish6-1.jpg http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd97/FiksMay/Fish/P1040913.jpg May 2010 http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd97/FiksMay/Fish/P1060519.jpg http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd97/FiksMay/Fish/P1060773.jpg http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd97/FiksMay/Fish/P1060770.jpg http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd97/FiksMay/Fish/P1060602.jpg Ive now moved her to my 60 litre tank - should i add salt or just keep up with the water changes - 2x a week in the hope that this might cure her. The 29 litre has a Fluval 305 filter which for tanks up to 300 litres so i assumed it was more than adequate but im happy to upgrade to a fluval 405 if i have to.
  4. Hi Maceo thanks for replying to my post. i thought changing water weekly would keep my water in better quality from my original once every 2/3 weeks but it seems the test results are the same apart from the reading ive just taken.... which is nitrite 0, ammonia 0 but nitrates is 0!!! - when i used to do a water change every 2 weeks the nitrates would be arond 7-10 so im not sure what this means - do you think this is contributing to it? do you think i shoudl try doing water changes twice a week without the heater and just salt. im now thinking i shoudl take her out and put her in the 60 litre, and keep her in a salt solution for a while. As i say she seems happy and is her nromal self but i obviously dont want to i only put the heater in on Tuesday this week so dont know if that makes a difference but ive turned it down so that when i move her tomorrow the tank shoudl be at its normal temperature of around 78
  5. Hi its me again just wondering what i should do with Yuki (Ryukin) I posted a message around the end of March about yuki who had rot on her dorsal fin - which hasn't healed up with the 0.03% salt solution ive used for 4 weeks. so i decided to put a heater in teh tank which is now at 85 degrees in teh hope that the salt and the heat might help. today ive noticed that she has red veins on her fin and the rot which was thick before is even thicker - hopefully you can see in the photo. ive decided to turn the heater down slowly to 80/82 which woudl be slightly higher than if it was at room temperature as its usually around 78. the first photo is what her fin looked like in March http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd97/FiksMay/fish3.jpg this is a photo of how her fin looks now - shes also changing colour from gold to white! http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd97/FiksMay/043.jpg the rot is basically a thick looking mark on her fin - tonight it looks like parts have got thicker - she doesnt seem to be stressed or anythign but im concerned with teh red streaks that ive either made it worse or the salt and the heat is doing its thing. i also bought a bottle of Myxazin in case the salt solution isnt strong enought. im wondering whether i shoudl isolate her as i do have a 60 litre tank that i could use and i could take a filter of my smaller tank but dont really know what the next step is. [*]Test Results for the Following: [*]Ammonia Level? 0 [*]Nitrite Level? 0 [*]Nitrate level? not sure coudlnt find the bottle but its usually roudn 5 or 10 [*]Ph Level, Tank (If possible, KH, GH and chloramines)? 7.6 [*]Ph Level, Tap (If possible, KH, GH and chloramines)? [*]Brand of test-kit used and whether strips or drops? API drops test [*]Water temperature? Don?t know but would say probably in the early 70s - recently around 78 and ive heated it up to 85 [*]Tank size (how many gals.) and how long has it been running? 29 gallons nearly 1 year as goldfish tank and before that 1.5 years as tropical tank [*]What is the name and size of the filter(s)? Fluval 305 [*]How often do you change the water and how much? Was once every 2 to 3 weeks now once every week once I?ve discovered Kokofish -about a third to half for the last few weeks every week [*]What kind of water additives or conditioners? - Seacheam prime [*]What do you feed your fish and how often? Once a day usually tetrafin gold japan (pellets), hikari lionhead (pellets) and about once a week peas [*]Any new fish added to the tank? Not since May 2009 [*]Any medications added to the tank? salt solutionh 0.03% [*]Any unusual findings on the fish such as "grains of salt," bloody streaks, frayed fins or fungus? Fungus but not in teh way of the normal fish rot - thick wide line of white thick skin in the fin [*]Any unusual behaviour like staying at the bottom, not eating, etc.? I think her swimming habit has changed due to effect on the dorsal fin although I?m not 100% sure I have a 125 litre tank (29 gallons) with 1 oranda, 1 black moor and 1 short tailed ryukin (named Yuki). hopefully someone out there can helo as i dont want to cause any stress to her or the other fish but as mentioned before they all seem happy at present
  6. ive got Elvis (Oranda) Yuki (Rjukin) Elton (Moor) Red (Lionhead) Molly or Lolly - havent decided (Fantail) and No name (Blue Oranda) Total 229
  7. Many thanks RanchuDressing - i have had a search but nothing for the uk comes up so i actually think it is US based - perhaps they dont think we require things like this!!!! I think im going to look at one of those vivarium lids as i guess this could work too.
  8. Since my delivery of my new tank (112 litres - home now to a fantail and lionhead) last week and discovering it doesnt fit under my kitchen cabinets as the hood is quite tall at abotu 20cm. i have now had to put this in my living room which means im still looking to replace the 60litre tank i have out in the kitchen. ive seen one that might fit but of course it doesnt mention what the height of teh hood is - so does anyone own Elite Style Glass 95 aquarium by Hagen as i just want to know what the measurement of hte hood is - i suspect it is still too big - but just want to also know if someoen does own it is it one of the hoods that can be taken off easily. i know i doulc probably just have the tank without the lid as someone did suggest something called a verso top but when i looked it up nothing came up for the uk unless i put it wrong as i wold also consider that too. thanks
  9. And heres a picture of Elvis with his black markings- bought April 2009 http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd97/FiksMay/S1050827.jpg Elvis during the change about 2-3 months later http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd97/FiksMay/S1051185.jpg Elvis as he is now http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd97/FiksMay/S1050913-1.jpg so its all normal
  10. Thanks i think ive solved my dilemma - ive just moved the tank into my living room so now i have a view of two tanks when i look right and left but the only downside its right in front of the window - the window does have that type of frosted film over so its about 70/80% of light that comes through - hopefully i wont any algae because of weekly maintenance. on teh plus side it means i now have an empty 60 litre tank - i wonder...) thanks i will have a look into the versa top suggestion as ive never heard of it so never know if i have to move the tank back to the kitchen as its sitting on a metal style cabinet and im surprised it ok as it already 50kg over the limit it suggests
  11. i just been delivered a new tank (112litres) for the 2 fancies my friend got me for my recent birthday :)theyre in a 60 litre tank at present but they are babies too - ive checked for leaks etc all is fine - measurements said height is 40cms so i took that to be total height of the tank with lid on - the actual tank is more 41cm but with the lid on around 52cm - i have a space of 46cm as i have lights under the kitchen units so my question is if i leave the lid off is there a chance my fancies might jump out as my other tank ive never had this problem but then again i only have the tank open for one hour! i assume i will have to try and find a lid from somewhere else or try one of those vivarium lids that slide across. hopefully someone can put my mind at rest
  12. does the tank only have to come from the link you sent as there are a few other goods ones like warehouse aquatics or seapets - if its online booking you require. theres a tank (i also have as a 2nd tank but now upgrading) called tetra art 60l which is rectangle also theres one called interpret pod which is just over ?100 but is also 64 litres - which is good for tropicals and i would say would be a lot easier to clean than the biorb.
  13. i think your post is confusing - you say hot water fish - do you mean fish at higher temperatures like tropical fish - but then you mention goldfish which are coldwater fish - i think you need to clarify which fish you are interested in so that people can help you more. But if you are looking at putting goldfish in the Biorb you have selected you will find most members on here wouldnt recommend a goldfish in there as theres not enough swimming space or growing space for one goldfish. If you do a search you will probably find quite a few responses on this. But you could probably look more at the smaller tropical fishes.
  14. ok thanks newbiefishgirl - i'll do a big water change tomorrow to make sure the anti rot stuff is out and start salting hopefully with the new water change regime and the salt solution i should see an improvement. do i need to put some heating in there or just keep as is. i will have a read of your link too
  15. http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd97/FiksMay/fish3.jpg sorry this is how she looks now
