  1. I think I would prefer several smaller fish, and preferably not fish that will breed.. I basically want the opposite of the planted goldfish tank I once in my innocence had, that took the whole day to set up and took the goldfish all of five minutes to destroy I've always loved Betta fish, I was thinking perhaps one Betta with a half dozen other fish?
  2. I'm planning to set up a planted aquarium, likely in 30 gallon tank, which tropical fish would you recommend as the best combination? We live in subtropical Queensland so water temp will be 26-28 degrees, with water heater in cooler months. I previously had goldfish, but in a bare tank, so no experience of planted tanks. Thanks for reading

  4. I am trying to find an experienced home for my three goldfish who are 4-5 years old - I will be moving to Australia this autumn. They are approx 3" long (excluding tail and fins); one oranda, one ryukin and one black moor (although he changed colour to orange a few years ago). The oranda is perfectly healthy, the black moor has a growth on the base of his tail, which has not enlarged in size over the past 2 years, and does not trouble him. He is unfortunately blind but can find food without problem as long as he is fed in the same place each time. The ryukin had problems with bloat last year, after months of hand feeding with peas that now settled but he still has some issues with his swim bladder and cannot float very well, although he can swim (along the bottom of tank) and find his food without problems. With the goldfish will come (if wanted) a 240 litre fluval tank with cabinet, as well as a 120 litre fluval tank with cabinet, a smaller 10 litre quarantine tank, three fluval external pumps (305 and 205 plus one 305 that needs a new seal), as well as other accessories such as water heater, plastic plants, air pumps, travel containers and portable air pumps etc. I am desperate to find a good home for these fish with someone who is experienced with goldfish and will take proper care of them. I am based in Chester but can travel (although tanks would have trouble fitting into my car). Please let me know if you have any suggestions.
  5. I can't fins my camera USB lead so can't get the pics uploaded at the moment. But they definately look like they have ich now, white grains on their backs and tails. I have salted the water gradually to 0.3% and raised the temp to 25 degrees - is this high enough? I think they are looking more comfortable, they have stopped rubbing themselves on the gravel and aren't resting at the bottom as much although their fins are still clamped. And the two little newbies are still happy and healthy, fins up and swimming fine, no signs of ich on them at all! Oh and the pH is 7.6 of tap and tank water
  6. Found her dead this morning She was doing so well, active and eating, did a 25% water change yesterday to start removing the epson and meds, checked pH and matched the temperature, she seemed fine.. She did have a few ich spots on her tail which I hadn't noticed before, maybe this tipped her over..? Am very sorry to lose her, I "rescued" her from a pet shop a year ago when she was the size of my thumbnail by quickly buying her before a man who wanted her as she was a "small goldfish" for his sons goldfish bowl..
  7. Ok so the one oranda with dropsy the I posted about a few weeks ago in the QT is absolutely fine now.. But the others in the main tank are ill.. I noticed their slime coat looked a bit matt so I thought maybe I hadn't used enough dechlorinator at the last water change.. but today they seem worse, a few of them are resting at the bottom a lot, clamping dorsal fins, and with calicos I can see some blood vessels in their tail fins which I am sure wasn't there before! I think they *might* also have ich, I have not seen in before but I am fairly sure there are some small "grains of salt" on the sides of two of them. They are eating ok but are really not looking well.. And I know exactly where the problem came from - the QT tank that I put my first ill oranda into was holding 2 baby goldfish that I was QTing for a month, they seemed fine and actually still seem fine, their dorsal fins are up and they're active! I moved them into the main tank when I put my sick guy into their tank (they are in a breeding cage as they are so much smaller..) I was going to get some copper meds tomorrow to add to the water to sort out the ich but am now worried that they might have red pest as well?? ANd should I be treating for that too?? [*]Ammonia Level? zero [*]Nitrite Level? zero [*]Nitrate level? 5 ppm [*]Ph Level, Tank (If possible, KH, GH and chloramines)? don't have a pH test kit.. 8. Just wanted to thank everyone for their help, even though I couldn't take some of the advice.. I did a 100% water change (with fish in an insulated container to maintain the higher temp of 27 degrees) to get rid of the salt and added epsom instead.. it turned out I didn't have metronidazole tablets after all, so I used co-amoxiclav instead. I did try to make gel food, which just went all smooshy and didnt set, and so I dissolved two tablets and added to tank water instead. She didnt get any worse over the next few days but no better, was still eating small amounts but floating head first near the water surface and seeming very lethargic, very pineconed. 4 days ago I noticed she had what looked like a white fluffy fungal growth on one of her scales which had loosened when I was moving her about but hadnt detached completely, and 2 days ago this had spread and was also growing on her side. She looked a bit worse and I didn't think at this stage that anything I did could make things much worse so I tried added 100mg ketoconazole to the water. The fungal growth is now gone and I am not sure if it was the antifungal or the antibiotic/epson starting to finally work but today she is no longer pineconed!! Still a bit puffier than normal but nowhere near how she was. She is also eating better today - I don't see her eat but the peas and pellets disappear so she must be! I haven't done any water changes as this was all fresh water I added last week and the parameters are still ok, the filter was well cycled for months prior. I'm now not sure how long to keep treating her for, as she is now in epson, ketoconazole and co-amoxiclav at 27 degrees, I'd be grateful for further advice! Should add, its a 125 litre tank she is in!
  9. I am getting epson salts tonight.. The tank she is in is currently salted at 0.1%, is it ok to add the epson salts to it or should i change the water? Its a cycled tank and nitrates are just above zero
  10. phoned vet, wont prescribe antibiotics without seeing fish, fish is obviously not well enough to be subjected to that.. I am a doctor and have some antibiotics stashed at home including i think metronidazole, would that work to mix into gel food and if so what dose should i use?
  11. Ok 3 baby goldfish are now moved into main tank (in isolation netting square) and sick fishie is out in their tank, has bubbler and filter and have turned heater up to 27 degrees. I don't have epson salts or any meds apart from one containing phenoxyethanol. I can get any of these treatments on Tuesday, http://www.petsathome.com/shop/fish/fish-treatments/fish-tank-treatments/
  12. I am just back from a few days away.. I had noticed one of my fish looked a bit rounder than usual before I left but its much more noticeable now.. Is this pineconing?? The other guys are fine, and this guy seems to be feeling ok, hes eating and swimming around, not floating/sinking.. Its late evening here now (UK) and am working a long day tomorrow so if he needs any meds othr than salt I can't get til evening of day after tomorrow.. Please help.. Photos of the fishie are on my facebook photo page - photobucket not working for me at the moment for some reason - I've made the folder public so hopefully everyone can see.. 13. The rest are all absolutely fine.. swimming happily.. tested the water again and all is fine, nitrates have come down to 20 since last water change..
