  1. Anybody ever heard of using oyster shells for calcium? You can buy it at any feed store, it is used as a supplement for laying hens to strengthen the eggshells.

  3. My water has been turning green in the last couple of weeks. After reading past topics on green water I am happy that it is(green) .
  4. Speaking of perfect water, the town where I live is slated for an RO town water system sometime in the next year. Then I imagine I'll have PH and a lack of mineral problems.
  5. I am indeed in SE Sask. I really like your idea of running vinegar through the filter. If it works it will be much easier than disassembling and cleaning the parts by hand. I'm actually trying an Aqua Tech right now alongside the AC's as my neighbour uses one and has had no problems in a year and a half.
  6. AC70= Aqua Clear70, an HOB filter. I would try a canister filter except I would be worried about leaks while I am away.
  7. Are you sure the green stuff is algae? After reading your post, I was interested in possibly getting one of these Dragons and did a search. I found these reviews on the nnnn site: So is it really algae or ???
  8. I have 2 AC 70's on my 50 gal tank. Great filters except for one thing: Calcium build-up on the impeller assemblies will cause my filters to stall. Especially after a power outage(which can be frequent in my area) or after a w/c, they will not re-start. In which case I have to tear them apart and clean out the calcium using vinegar. Even this only works for a couple of weeks, when they need to be re-done. What I wanted to know are there other brands of power filters that work better in very hard water that are not as prone to this sort of problem? I am gone from home quite a lot and having the filters quit while I am gone is not a good thing.
  9. Not trying to be a smart alec or anything but Big Al's has stores in Canada. From the website:
  10. Is it possible the cloudiness was caused by a fine abrasive that the previous owners used to clean the tank? My friend has a tank that an abrasive was used to clean the tank and it has a "cloudy look" to it. This unfortunately would be a permanent condition.
  11. Really? You whacked your filter for 2 hours? If the filter needs a hit to get it going again the impeller and impeller cavity are probably plugged up with minerals. It really should be taken apart and cleaned up. I soak my pump parts in vinegar for a couple of hours.(much easier than whackin)
  12. I have an aunt who has a 20 gallon tank with 30...yes 30!!! goldies and a chinese algae eater living in it. I've told here several times that it's against all the rules but she just scoffs at me. She also rarely does water changes. Thing is she has had this tank for about 7 months and hasn't lost a fish. Go figure
  13. I guess I am lucky considering this particular tank was put into service just this April.
  14. I had a ton of this inside of my tank. Before a water change I would turn off my power filters and scrape the sides of the tanks and let it settle to the bottom. Then I would suck the stuff off of the bottom while siphoning during the water change. I have some rocks and ornaments in the tank that had a fair amount of brown stuff on them as well but between water changes, time and my 2 albino bristlenose plecos the algae is in serious decline. No more of it on the walls of the tank or the rocks. And finally I have some green algae growing on the outflows of the filters With some patience and a little work(a pleco or 2 couldn't hurt) the problem will lessen or go away in time.

  16. Thanks The tank doesn't look as big as I thought it would though. It's definitely not too big.
  17. The 50 gallon......with background I'm running an Aqueon 30 and an Aquaclear 70. As soon as the tank is fully cycled I will replace the Aqueon with another Aquaclear 70.
  18. Thanks. There was a background but it went to this tank: A 20 gallon with 2 silver angels and Maxx the betta. Since the 50 gallon is longer than the 29 it's replacing, a new background will be going onto it.
  19. Here's my modest set-up: It's a 29G with 2 Aqueon 30's for 400 gph flow and a 12 inch airstone. Also have the bubbler hooked up to the hippo skull. Heating duties are taken care of by a Fluval M200. Residing in the tank are Mowgli(moor), RC(redcap oranda), and Goof(lionhead) Sharing the tank with the goldies are 2 small Albino BN plecos, they usually are hiding under the fake log or in the skull. This will all be changing in a couple of weeks when my 50G tank arrives.
  20. That's a very nice looking set-up. Good choice
  21. A couple of these would do it, but the price!! 2x24wt510000k 2 of these are a little more reasonable: aqualightdoublestriplight30 the first one, ouch.... the second one I could see myself splurging on. I will have to see how much money payday brings. haha. or save up and hope the red can survive. Here's an even better(more economical) alternative: 96W-4x-6700K Anyone else know of a better buy? These fixtures are all assuming your tank is 30 inches.
