  1. Hi everyone! I noticed a large outbreak of white dots that are scattered across the glass of my aquarium and its decor - nothing on my black moor yet but does this sound like parasites to anyone? Looking closer the dots they have a little fuzz surrounding them and are larger than a period at the end of a sentence. Any ideas?
  2. I do like Aquaclear! They do a good job but I was mistaken about my current filter! It is a Marineland Penguin 150 so its really does not supply adequate GPH for goldfish...instead I am looking towards this as my main filter --> http://www.amazon.com/Penguin-Power-Filter-350-GPH/dp/B0009IMDQM/ref=sr_1_2?s=home-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1309920028&sr=1-2 All in favor? Martin seems to be doing slightly better I hope! He is right side up and breathing steady
  3. Thank you all for your help!! I will keep the water changes weekly at 50% and monitor my fish. I turned him right side up and he has been has not fallen over in a couple hours which is progress I hope. I will be looking into a bigger filtration system as well...anyone have any suggestions?
  4. I am unable to get the water tested at this time. However, I would appreciate any speculation on the matter. 33 Gallon Tank Marineland Penguin Filter for 50 Gallon Tank has been running for about 10 months with regular water changes. Any advice would be appreciated at this point - especially what causes a fish to lie over and also develop furry strand like white spots that tend to shed and float around the tank?
  5. [*]Water temperature? ROOM TEMP [*]Tank size (how many gals.) and how long has it been running? 33 GALLONS [*]What is the name and "size of the filter"(s)? MARINELAND [*]How often do you change the water and how much? ONCE A WEEK 1/3 CHANGE [*]how many days ago was the last water change and how much did you change? 7 DAYS AGO [*]How many fish in the tank and their size? ONLY MARTIN [*]What kind of water additives or conditioners? API [*]What do you feed your fish and how often? Saki-Hikari EVERY OTHER DAY [*]Any new fish added to the tank? NO [*]Any medications added to the tank? MELAFIX PIMAFIX [*]Any unusual findings on the fish such as "grains of salt," bloody streaks, frayed fins or fungus? LIGHT WHITE "DUSTY" SPOTS ON HEAD?? [*]Any unusual behavior like staying at the bottom, not eating, etc.? STAYS ON BOTTOM STAGGERED BREATHING CANT HOLD HIMSELF UP
  6. Hi everyone, it is truly sad that I post in this section of the forum...never thought I would have to My goldfish Martin who I have had since college (4 years ago) has been lying down sideways in his tank and barely is moving. I have done a water change and treated him with melafix and pimafix to try and counter act his symptoms. He has had swim bladder problems in the past but this looks serious. I have to periodically turn him right side up so he is level on the gravel and comfortable to breathe. Really upset about this. Need some advice and steps that I should take next.
  7. Hi everyone! My Oranda Martin seems to have developed a white spot on top of his head that has a strand of "fuzzy" coming from it! I though initially the white spot was new growth since he moved into a new 30 gallon about 3 weeks ago but...now I'm concerned! Any idea anyone?
  8. Has anyone heard of the goldfish product line under Seachem? Check out the link: http://www.seachem.com/Products/product_pages/GoldBasics.html What about the "related products" as well? Is it wise to "buffer" the water to a "goldfish" pH level?
  9. Hi everyone, I just ran out of API Stress Coat and was wondering if there were any better water conditioners for me to try with my Oranda in a 30 gallon tank. Any suggestions??
  10. Just did the ammonia reading and got 0.8 Water change? What do you guys think?
  11. Thanks for the response Austin! I currently am testing my water and so far I have a reading of 8.2 for my pH and about 0.7 for Nitrite. I am about to start my ammonia testing and will report back soon. As far as for water circulation, I do have a long bubble wand in the back that does not go into the filter. I really am rooting for AquaClear, as I love the design...hopefully it comes through Either way what do you guys think about my pH and Nitrite readings? Is it safe? Has my tank cycled yet? What reading establish a cycled tank?
  12. Sounds good Daryl, I do have a water testing kit which unfortunately I will not be able to retrieve until Wednesday. In the mean time I will watch to see if this bacterial bloom clears and look into getting a smaller charcoal bag. As soon as I have acquired a proper charcoal bag I am going to do what you recommend and put two sponges on bottom with a little charcoal on top followed by biological media. Thank you so much for your help! I will keep you posted
  13. Thank you so much for your responses everyone, especially Daryl! To answer your questions: -I did not replace the biological media, I gently rinsed it. -The charcoal is very large I agree it is way too much, but it is what came in the package designed for my filter. I did rinse the charcoal pretty thoroughly before adding it, but I would like to lower the size of the charcoal. Do you have an idea on the best way to go about this because the bags for the filter obviously won't be an option -I really like your idea of having two mechanical filtration sponges on the bottom with a small bag of charcoal and biological filtration on top. I will admit that when I cleaned the tank I replaced the mechanical filtration sponge with a new one. -At this point I will do a decent water change and wait to hear from you! Your response has helped a ton! Thanks also for the compliments on my Oranda "Martin"! I will gladly post some pics once my tank clears up Let me know what you think Thank you! -Kevbo
  14. Hey everyone I am concerned about my goldfish's 10 gallon tank. I just did a full cleaning of my tank on Friday and replaced my filter media and did a 3/4 water change. It is now Sunday and the tank is getting extremely cloudy! I do not understand how this could happen so quickly as I just cleaned the tank! It has never progressed this fast and I am wondering if the filter is not doing its job? I am currently using an AquaClear 20 that has 3 types of filter media that the water goes through (mechanical, chemical, and biological). My only guess is that I do not have the filter in correctly? The mechanical is on the bottom, chemical in the middle, and biological on top in filter chamber. The water filters to the bottom and makes it way up and over the top into the tank. Should I take out the biological filtration and just use two mechanical filters and the charcoal on top or middle? Help!
