Emperor Smart UV 25 watt

tithra

I recently added an Emperor Smart UV 25 watt UV sterilizer to my tank. This is just a quick general review of it :)

This UV was ordered from goldfish connection: http://www.goldfishc...ctId=40&catId=1

When you order from goldfish connection the unit comes with a pump that is (according to them) the proper flow rate, which is nice because this is something that can affect the effectiveness of a sterilizer greatly. It also comes with all the plumbing parts to hook the pump to etc.

It is relatively large (3 inches around and maybe about 30 inches long... sorry I didn't measure ;) ), but this is good because it means that more water can come in contact with the light which makes it more effective than a smaller unit.

I don't find that it creates any noticeable extra current in my tank and there is no noticeable suction from the pump.

It was pretty easy to set up. The site claims that it takes 10 min to put together, it took me about 20 min, but I am not all that savvy at these things either. I did have a mishap where water came pouring out of the unit when I first set it up because I did not tighten a part adequately.

Overall I really like this UV and would buy it again. My one and only complaint is that the pump it comes with is a little loud, but I am being nit picky when I say that. It creates a bit of a hum, which is louder than anything else currently running on my tank, so it is noticeable to me, but only if I am listening for it.

I made a video of me putting it together (there is no audio, just a song). The only thing not shown in the video is the paper towel test, which I honestly forgot to do initially and had to go back and do it later when I wasn't filming, but basically you stick a paper towel in the tube where the light should go and run the unit for 30 min. Then take the paper towel out and make sure it is still dry. If wet/damp you know you need to go back and tighten things up.

Hi Tithra,

Thanks for the article! Can you tell us how deep the UV filter goes (how many inches vertically it hangs off the back)? We want to get one too, but don't know if it will fit on the back of our tank (we have two Aquaclear 110s on the back). I read on Goldfishconnection that one person fit the filter underneath their HOB filter. Do you think that's possible with an Aquaclear 110?

Also, how have you liked your UV filter since (your original post)?

Thanks!

I have this UV sterilizer as well, and I used it on my 75 gallon tank with two AC110's and it fit perfectly fine. It was indeed underneath one of the filters when I had it set up this way.

I was wondering if any of you (perhaps with UV sterilizers in general) have had problems with cycle bumps? We seem to get a bump whenever we turn on our sterilizer, but it was my understanding UV sterilizers shouldn't affect cycles because all the good bacteria is in the filter media (and not the water) anyway. It could just be coincidental, but for example, when the sterilizer was off while we Prazi'ed, no problems. When we turned it back on after Prazi'ing, bump  .

Also, separately, it seems to affect our water temperature, increasing it to about 76-78, but I figure that's okay since it will stabilize there and it's not too high.

No, it's really not adjustable. The input/output placement are fixed. Let me know if you want measurements of how far apart they are

I haven't had it effect my cycle, I have heard of this happening though with a very newly cycled tank. I also haven't noticed a change in temp, but I can imagine if the lights get hot it could effect the temp

WHOA :yikes $300 is kind of a lot more than I am willing to spend. Is there anything else that would still be good enough to be worth getting?

I know several people here have the green killing machine UV's and are happy with them :) they are much more affordable

Ahhhh that's much better! So wait, I still don't get how they work, sorry. Do they have like a separate "filter" pump but instead of filtering it UVs? And it like pumps the water thru the sterilizer? Some people are talking about loud pumps...do you know if the green machine pump is quiet? Thanks for your patience, I have never seen one of these in action before! :I-Thank-You:

the one I have has a pump that is inside the aquarium that attaches to the input of the UV and pumps water through the UV. I could also set it up to be inline with a canister filter (so that there is no pump required, the canister basically acts as the pump and pushes water through the UV before it returns to the tank), however it is difficult to find a canister filter that runs a low enough gph so that the water is going through the UV slowly enough to be effective.

The green machine I unfortunately know nothing about, so I am no help there! Perhaps start a thread asking about that one specifically? I know there are people here that have them :)

I feel really dumb because I'm not familiar with any of this topic. Your video was nice and you showed us how you hooked it all up. That is a lot of money considering it's more then my aquarium. I'm going to have to do some reading on this. I saw you had your AC on the back still.
