5 posts in this topic

i was cleaning my filter media today...

whilst i was cleaning, i looked at the sponge and there was this brown gunk on it...

i don't think it was poo (maybe i'm wrong)....

the bugs that convert ammonia to nitrAte live on highly oxygenated surfaces.

When you get a lot of gunk built up on your filter media, there are a lot of heterotrophic bacteria chowing down on that gunk, consuming oxygen and produce ammonia/CO2. The heterotrophs grow a lot faster than the biobugs and create conditions not hospitable for the biobugs. That's why it's good to keep the gunk rinsed off your filter media (using discarded tank water, not chlorinated water).

youll start to see that same brown gunk build up on the filtertube and in the filterbox as well (if you havent already). im not 100% positive but, the beneficial bacteria will grow atop each other until you get longish strands of brownish streamers. this is the good stuff that you dont want to disturb too much. with this in mind, try not to ever do a 100% cleaning of the filterbox and the filter pad at the same time. as far as whats on the filterpad, swish it around in a bucket of dechlored water (or old tankwater) to get as much of the gunk off that you can.

hope this helps! :)
