How many days for colonizing nitrifying bacteria?

3 posts in this topic

Today I cleaned the canister filters and their media thoroughly in order to destroy a growing mould. Naturally the biological cycle is disrupted. I put one pouch of nitrifying bacterial spores (Cheer Swim brand) in the water to jump start the cycle and shut down the UV. How many days will it take to colonize the bacteria inside the filters and biological media? In how many days can I restart the UV? Thanks.

It will take at least a week before the colony is established, perhaps even two, depending on how much you added and how big your tank is. If you have fish in there, you really will need to check your parameters daily. You should, anyway, to document the efficacy of this product for us.

It will be 4-8 weeks before you can use the UV again. I would go with 8 weeks. If you turn it on too soon, you will crash your cycle again.
