Nitrates present in well water

2 posts in this topic

I moved in January and my new house has nitrates present in the well water, looks to be about 10 or 15. Is there a product that will neutralize those? They get a little higher as the week goes on but never up to 40 during the week and I am now doing huge water changes once a week. Should I worry or is this common? I don't want to have to buy water every week.

I have about 10ppm nitrates in my tap water (and 1ppm ammonia, too). It doesn't really hurt anything, as long as you keep up on your water changes. 10ppm is not a bad place to start, but it will mean you will get up to a higher amount that is more of a bad place much quicker than if you'd started at 0. Just test your water a lot at first so you can get a feel for how long you can go between water changes.

You can add plants to absorb some of the nitrates, if you want--that's really the best strategy for getting rid of them between water changes.
