  1. I have a small siphon and then a larger fish hose that hooks up to the sink. I've noticed over time they've collected black residue inside of it, I'm not sure what the black stuff is? How do I safely clean it? is it harmless? I certainly don't want to clean it with something that would poison the fish.
  2. Sorry my internet has been wacky. I started medi-gold and as fast as it came on it went away! Should I still do anything else?? Do I continue with the medi gold? It's only been a few days.
  3. I put photos on the bottom. I don't know how to explain this. About every month, Twila will get litte red sores on her head (wen) and then they strangely just dissapear afer a few days. Guess I've never worried about it or put her in the QT tank because the other fish are unaffected and it always goes away. However, this sore is bigger and deeper and more red than any other time and I am starting to think something is really wrong. Also what is that little white piece on the sore? She also has some red streaks in her tail. Even if it does go away again, I just want to know what it is, why it clears up on its own, and why it comes back. Here are the perimeters: Please copy & paste fill the following form and fill it out to the best of your ability when requesting help for Goldfish Problems: Main Tank: * Ammonia Level 0 * Nitrite Level 0 * Nitrate level 10 * Ph Level, Tank 7.5 * Ph Level, Tap 6.5 * Brand of test-kit used and whether strips or drops? For the KH I use strips, but for everything else I use the API fresh water test kit with the glass tubes * Water temperature? 73 * Tank size (how many gals.) WAS in a 40 gallon with two other fish, but now in a 20 gallon QT tank by herself * What is the name and "size of the filter"(s)? On the main tank: Marineland biowheel 350 and also a Marineland biowheel 200. Quarantine tank is: Aquaclear 50 power filter * How often do you change the water and how much? I do 50% water changes twice a week on the 40 gallon tank * How many days ago was the last water change and how much did you change? 50% two days ago * How many fish in the tank and their size? Three 3-4" inch fish, including Lila * What kind of water additives or conditioners? Prime * What do you feed your fish and how often? I feed pro gold every day and about once a week the spirulina flakes and sometimes peas * Any new fish added to the tank? no * Any medications added to the tank? no * List previous issues experienced (dropsy, SBD, etc.) One of my fish has a little bit of a floating issue its right after I feed and it goes away after a few hours and the spirulina really helps * List entire medication/treatment history for fish and tank. Please include salt, Prazi, PP, etc and the approximate time and duration of treatment. I have never treated the 40 gallon tank for flukes. I have treated the QT tank for flukes. * Any unusual findings on the fish such as "grains of salt," bloody streaks, frayed fins or fungus? Bloody tail if you look closely * Any unusual behavior like staying at the bottom, not eating, etc.? Her behavior is perfectly normal and she is eating normally Picture: Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GmG1Kw_YxlM
  4. Sorry if I'm in the wrong section. Anyways, I got a digital PH meter from goldfish connection. I literally thought all I had to do was just dip it in and out and that was it. I am so confused by all the directions on this. It's almost not worth it I feel like I want to use my test tubes again. The PH is different every time I test it, even though I read the directions and "calibrated" it 3 days ago. I don't even know if I correctly calibrated it because the instructions were so complicated. The fluid was in a clear bag that said 7.0 on it. Why would they only give me one tiny packet of the calibration fluid if I need to test it weekly Here's a pic of it: I didn't even know what calibration meant until now.. still a little confused. I feel stupid. The PH seemed to be accurate at first, but then it was showing that all my tanks were going from like 7.4 to 8.0. My tanks NEVER go UP in PH by themselves.. not unless i've added something to the tanks. All I know is that if you test every day (which I do) you should re-calibrate once a week. The only kind I could find online was the 7.0 one in the baggies, the same fluid that came with my PH monitor. Just frustrated because I feel like I'm never going to be able to figure out this monitor. I went ahead and ordered the calibration fluid anyways.. you know the little baggies that say 7.0 on them, I got 20 they were so cheap. Also, what is up with that part in the directions that tells me to shake it like its a thermometer with mercury in it? thermometers that were glass with mercury are a bit past my time so I didn't know what they meant by shaking it. If that is the case, how do i shake it correctly and for how long? Do I do it dry before I put the probe into the tank or do I dip it into the water first and then shake it? I can scan directions on here if I'm not making any sense.
  5. Lila is gone. I appreciate everyone's support. I've been bawling my eyes out. She was the cutest, sweetest fish I've ever had. I had her for almost 4 years. No one understands but you guys. I am very sad and upset.
  6. Thank you all for your wonderful support
  7. I found some clove oil, and gently put her to sleep. I hope I did the right thing
  8. Lila is not going to make it. She is a lemon head lion head who has been stuck on the bottom of the tank for 2 years. In the past without gravel she could still swim and slide around the tank and would get happy when I fed her. She has suddenly deteriorated. I came into the room today and she is lying on her back on the bottom and can't flip over. I don't know what else to do than get some clove oil. I've been searching everywhere for it, and now its too late in the day and was wondering if there were any other humane ways to euthanize a fish. I've had her 4 years and I'm heartbroken and panicking because she is in severe distress and there is nothing I can do about it.
  9. I think I'm bordering on being cruel rather than humane. Maybe Lila needs to get put down. Lila can barely move. She watches me with her eyes and sometimes can wiggle a little when she sees me but she no longer can turn around to get to her food. She'll swim into the corner and doesn't have the strength to get out of it. I can't bear to watch this. She just lies there all day 24/7 and i'm heartbroken and devastated and I can't stop crying. I've had her forever.. over 3 years.
  10. ok I will make sure to fast him and what about peas? Do they work as well as spinach?
  11. I did a 50% water changes and the floating and flipping went away!! Maybe it was the nitrates?
  12. Should I treat for flukes also? Can a fish live with flukes for years? I've got the prazi
  13. I have one more question. Why is it that Speckles is upside down yet not at the top floating??
  14. Ok, I haven't tested the nitrates, maybe they're too high? I'll check that. (**edited**: I had written that I didn't have directions to test for nitrates but i do sorry for the confusion) UPDATE: Nitrates are 20, that is too high isn't it?
