i was reading some thread on food earlier, and can't find it . but there was something that people feed their goldfish to make them really white before fish shows. what is that?

??
I must have missed that thread. I think that if a fish is already white--you can keep it white by feeding foods without color enhancers.
Does anyone else know about this?

oh I found it!! its in the food forum. Its under the thread about caroteen foods. Anyway someone said if you feed a white fish boiled barley they will be really white. SOmetimes people do that before fish shows. I have several white tetras, one of which is tinted blue because it was fed dye colored foods before I bought it. I thought maybe I could feed it the same thing that people feed white fish and it would go back white. I know they fade, as I had some colored ones before. I bought all white ones this time to avoid dangers of a dyed or dye fed fish but I got this one that was dyed blue. I was hoping there was something I could feed it to turn it back white like it was naturally.

all my fish are turning white naturally! there are a two in my tank (goldies) that were completely orange when i bought them and now are completely white. i heard it's due to genetics because the orange color is bred into them.

Are you talking about the white skirt tetras? They will turn back to white naturally within a month or so. The ones at our store only keep their color for about a week and then start turning white.
I dont know if feeding boiled barley to tropical fish would have the same effect as goldfish. BTW I keep my goldies off color-enhancing foods and they keep their nice bright whites!

I'm interested to know if there are any good NON-color enhancing food out there. Seems like the good brands are Hikari and Pro-Gold, but my understanding is that they do have color enhancers in them. My black moor has turned completely bronze from having color enhacing food!

Try Hikari Wheat germ... I believe they're not colour enhanced.
Also that 'boiled barley' thing is something Koi ppl do to get snow white skin in koi b4 shows.... so it may be true in Goldfish too.

I thought that grains weren't a good food for goldfish, is this true with barley too?

black moors tend to turn an orangish with warmer temperatures also! if you want them to stay nice and velvety black, keep the temp in the mid 60's and don't feed color enhancing food.
