Well if you want fry, then I would say it is unlucky
I've had my fish for over a year, and they just spawned now.
My temperature didn't go low and then rise, I was just doing daily water changes, and my fish are the right size and sex.....and voila one day I had some eggs! They also need a lot of room to spawn.
Your fish will lay when they are ready, and I can't wait to hear about it! I LOVE veil tails.

I guess it all depends on a few factors, like the kind of food and the amount, the water temp, even a silly thing like a change in weather. i have one of my 75 gl up and running for months now, with 2 huge chocolate orandas in there, as well as 3 rather small crowned pearlscales, also chocolate. I didn't change anything in their habitat, their feeding, not even a water change, nothing....But there were about 50 eggs in their tank a few days ago, most of them not fertile, I got the most I could out of there into a bucket.
I kept thinking why they would spawn now, with no changes whatsoever, until it dawned on me - a huge storm front had approached all day that day, and was going for 2 days!! POnd fish of course react to such things much easier, but it only could have been that.....

I heard that water conditions can also affect whether or not your fish breed.
